The church of St. Peter and Paul in Albrechtice nad Vltavou, located on a mild hill above the village of Písek, is a Romanesque building from the 3rd quarter of the 12th century. This monument is remarkable with its history and rich painting decoration, especially Romanesque frescoes depicting the Last Court and the theme of "Hell and Paradise." The church is today a parish church of the Roman Catholic parish Albrechtice nad Vltavou.

The construction was created during the expansion of Romanesque architecture, which was a period of intense sacral construction for the then Bohemia. Originally, the church had a simple architecture with a flat ceiling, but it was replaced in the 18th century by a high-value vault with sections. The characteristic character of the building is supplied by the prism tower. Over the years, especially in the 19th century, the construction has undergone several reconstructions that have significantly affected its external and internal appearance.

The art treasure is Romanesque frescoes on a triumphant arch. These valuable works attract the attention of historians and visitors.

The church has witnessed various events over the years. In 2002, the statue of St. Peter was stolen from the altar, causing the need to replace it. After the collection in 2019, a copy of it was placed on the altar on 25 December 2021, made according to a historical photograph from 1949. These events underscore not only the cultural but also the community's importance of the monument for local people.

The church is surrounded by a cemetery with a fenced wall decorated with chapel with 19th century paintings. These art works were created by František Mikule from Jinín under the leadership of vicar Vít Cíza. Paintings that resemble the fates of buried personalities have undergone several restoration, most recently in the years 2010- 2014. The cemetery wall was transferred from the church's property to the municipality of Albrechtice nad Vltavou in 2007.

Today the church is fully accessible to visitors. Its historical significance, rich decoration and architectural character makes it an interesting destination for lovers of Romanesque heritage. The sightseeing tour offers an opportunity not only to admire works of art, but also to better understand the history and culture of the region.

St. Peter and Paul's church is more than just a religious center; It's a monument to the spirit of its time. Its history and artistic values attract both local and world travelers. Visiting this place allows you not only to look into the past, but also to appreciate the rich culture and traditions of the region.

The Church of Saint Peter and Paul in Albrechtice nad Vltavou in Písek District was built as a Romanesque structure in the third quarter of the twelfth century. Over the centuries it was remodeled several times, most extensively in the nineteenth century. To this day it serves as the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish Albrechtice nad Vltavou.

The church has a single nave. Originally it had a flat ceiling, but in the eighteenth century it was vaulted with a barrel vault with lunettes. A prism-shaped tower adjoins the nave. Inside there is preserved rich painted decoration. The most valuable are the Romanesque paintings of the Last Judgment and the motif of hell and paradise on the triumphal arch.

A more recent story is also connected to the church. On December seventh, two thousand and two, a statue of Saint Peter was stolen from the altar. In two thousand and nineteen a collection was held to obtain a new one. The copy was created in the workshop of restorer Aleš Lička in nearby Smrkovice. A historical photograph from nineteen forty-nine and the style of the preserved statue of Saint Paul served as the model. The new statue returned to the altar on Christmas Day, December twenty-fifth, twenty twenty-one.

The church is surrounded by a cemetery and its wall is decorated with small chapels with paintings. The idea came from Father Vít Cíza, who served in Albrechtice from eighteen nineteen to eighteen fifty-four. He had it carried out in eighteen forty-one. The paintings were created by František Mikule from Jinín. They are accompanied by verses by Father Cíza himself, which recount the fates of people buried here.

The paintings were restored several times. Václav Šebel from Písek first repaired them in eighteen eighty-three. Further repairs were carried out between nineteen thirty-one and nineteen thirty-four by Tomáš Peterka and Josef Kousal. In the nineteen eighties concrete panels covered the original images and new images were painted on them. In two thousand and seven the cemetery wall passed from the ownership of the church to the municipality. After the panels were removed, individual paintings were gradually restored between two thousand and ten and two thousand and fourteen. Some were damaged or had missing parts, and so restorers had to replicate the style of the original artists.

The cemetery was also featured in a film. Scenes were shot here from the film Jan Cimbura directed by František Čáp from nineteen forty-one and from the film Dým bramborové natě directed by František Vláčil from nineteen seventy-six.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is morning or late afternoon hours, where soft light falls on the facade of the church, highlighting the details of its Romanesque origin and later reconstruction.

When visiting, we recommend taking with you a suitable and respectful garment corresponding to the character of the parish temple and the camera to capture architecture.

For the best photos, focus on the details connecting the Roman elements from the twelfth century with the 19th century modifications, ideally during the golden hour.

For families with children, a visit is an opportunity to familiarize with the history of medieval construction in a quiet environment of the village.
