Kostel svatého Rocha na Hradčanech Church

The Church of Saint Roch on Hradčany is a notable late Renaissance building with Gothicizing elements located within the Strahov Monastery complex in Prague. Commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II as gratitude for ending a plague epidemic, it stands out due to its unique composite ground plan and manieristic architectural style. Initially serving as a parish church, it later became a chapel for the deceased before undergoing significant renovations in 1881-1882.

The origins of the Church date back to the early 17th century when Emperor Rudolf II ordered its construction following a devastating plague epidemic that ravaged Bohemia. In 1599, during this period of crisis, Rudolf II vowed to build a new church dedicated to the patron saints of plagues, Saints Sebastian and Roch. The foundation stone was laid in 1603 with support from Strahov Monastery's abbot Lohelius. Although rough construction was completed before Emperor Rudolf II’s death in 1611, it wasn't until 1617 that Archbishop Jan Lohelius consecrated the church, with interior completion taking another decade.

Architecturally, the Church of Saint Roch is a testament to late Renaissance design infused with Gothicizing elements. Its manieristic style is evident in its unique composite ground plan, giving the structure an oval appearance despite being primarily rectangular. The single-nave layout includes a vestibule with chamfered corners on one side and a similarly shaped chancel on the other, creating this distinctive form. Additionally, two pentagonal chapels flank the main body of the church, culminating in a pentagonal apse that evokes the arms of a cross. Originally, these spaces housed altars dedicated to plague patrons such as Saint Roch, Saint Sebastian, and Saint Anthony the Hermit.

Ownership and administration of the Church have seen significant changes over time. Initially under the Strahov Monastery's domain, it lost its parish status in 1784 when Emperor Joseph II secularized it along with its cemetery. The church then served briefly as a chapel for the deceased before being repurposed as a blacksmith shop. In 1881-1882, significant renovations were undertaken by Strahov’s abbot Zikmund Antonín Starý to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Rudolf and Princess Stéphanie. This renovation included the installation of three terracotta sculptures designed by Antonín Procházka and crafted by František Enders.

Throughout its history, the Church has witnessed several key events and curiosities. After its consecration in 1617, it became a burial site for notable figures such as architect Jan Jiří Gottwig in 1684 and painter Krodel in 1713. The church suffered damage during Prussian invasions but was restored between 1747-1748, with the installation of an image of Saint Roch by F. X. Palka on its main altar.
