Latinská škola in Moravian Třebová is a significant Renaissance building on Church Square 25, close to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The object stands out with a preserved Renaissance form and unique decoration of facades. These cover ancient quotes, which in the past served as a didactic aid for pupils.

The existence of the school is documented in writing from 1477 to 1482. In the early modern era, when humanism emphasized the study of ancient authors and Latin, the building acted as an educational institution. The level matched today's high school. Teachers here under the leadership of evangelical priests, graduates of the University of Wittenberg, taught Latin, trivia, mathematics and other sciences.

The original medieval building underwent a major transformation after the great city fire in 1541. Subsequently, it was reunited with Ladislav z Boskovice. A characteristic element of architecture is Latin inscription on all four sides of the building. These texts were intended to encourage pupils to moral values and study. On the south side is the inscription Turpia fuge, not tolles aliena, on the north side of Deum cole, not jurato. The west wall is dated 1566 and the inscription Mendacium oderis, te ipsum ne negligas, the Lente festival (Hate the lie, don't underestimate yourself, hurry slowly). The east wall contains a more comprehensive message: Iracundiae moderare, pacem dilige, violentiam oderje (Peaceful anger, love peace, hate violence), Parentes ama, preaceptores reverere, magistratus metue (Love parents, honor teachers, respect the supreme) and Paulus Eckelius, pietatem sectar, veritati adhaereto (Pavel Eckelius, commit to piety, encourage to truth).

The school administration was provided by evangelical priests in the early modern times. In addition to Ladislav z Boskovice, who was responsible for the reconstruction of the building, the persons associated with this place also include Paulus Eckelius, whose name is included in the inscriptions on the eastern facade.

Currently part of the building serves as a cultural centre. The building has retained its Renaissance character and thanks to its preserved inscriptions it is a valuable document of the period education system and humanist ideals. Visiting this place offers a unique insight into the history of education and Renaissance architecture in Czech countries.

Welcome to Moravian Treb. Right now, when you're standing in this place, you're in the very heart of a city where history meets everyday life. Look around you. You are located in the Church Square, a space that is not only the centre of urban activity, but also a silent witness to many important events that have been going on here for centuries. In front of you is a building that is a symbol of wisdom, learning and the relentless changes that human efforts have faced. It's Latinská škola. Feel the atmosphere, feel the calm that brings this historic building to the square. Her presence here is not random, it is proof of the endurance of people who believed that education was the basis of everything mankind is building.

To understand what you're seeing right now and why this place is so special, we need to go back deep into the past together. This school is not just a modern object, its roots go much further than it might seem. Historical records allow us to look into 1477 to 1482 when its existence was clearly confirmed for the first time. This means that even when the world began to change and move from one age to another, there was already learning. But history can be unpredictable and sometimes very cruel. In 1541, the city met with a huge test that changed everything. The great fire that broke out at the time did not only destroy wooden buildings, but also jeopardized the very existence of this educational place. Many things burned to the ground, but the people's will for the school to work again was stronger than the power of fire. After this tragedy came a time of renewal. The key figure for this new beginning was Ladislav z Boskovic. It was thanks to his intervention and willingness that the building was rebuilt and restored. Thanks to him, the school could reopen its doors and become a pillar of education for the next generation of people who were here looking for a way to know.

Now, please pay attention to the architecture of the building itself, which is standing right in front of you. Feel her Renaissance character. This era has brought a new sense of beauty, order and harmony into the building industry, which is very clear on this construction. Although the building has undergone many changes over the centuries, its appearance remains unique and retains its dignity. Look at her facades. These are fascinating surfaces that tell the story of time. If you look at the west wall now, you can see something that is absolutely special for this building. There are inscriptions that were made in 1566. These characters and words are not just random decorating, which should only collapse the building. These are components of the structure itself that have remained here for centuries and which form the face of the entire object. Feel how these inscriptions affect the overall impression of the building and how they connect architecture to human thought.

Now, imagine what kind of lives happened here once. This building was not just an empty box of stone and mortar, it was a living institution of early modern times. In these areas, young people were taught to prepare for their future role in the world. Under the leadership of the evangelical priests there was a learning that was very important for the development of the mind. The main pillar was Latin. For the then pupils, Latin was not just another language to learn, it was a gateway to knowledge, scientific texts and international communication between scholars throughout Europe. They learned not only the language, but also the different sciences that formed the basis of human knowledge at the time. The name Ladislav of Boskovice, which we have already talked about, is also a name like Paulus Eckelius. These people and all those who taught and studied here created an environment where wisdom was born and future generations of educated people formed.

And now I want to tell you one thing that might make you look at the facades again, but this time with a completely different look. Why are those ancient quotes on the walls? Why are there signs? These words were not placed there just to make the building look better or to make it richer for details. They had a deeper, spiritual and educational purpose. They were used as a didactic aid. That means they served as a quiet teacher who never sleeps. When students passed the building, these quotes were supposed to encourage them to moral values. They were supposed to teach them how to be good people, how to act fairly and how to find the truth in everyday life. It was a lesson they learned by simply looking at the wall during their day. Every word was intended to shape the character of a young man and remind him of what was really important in life.

I hope this short journey over time has helped you better understand the importance of this place. Latinská škola is not just a historical object that simply stands in the square, it is a monument to human intellect and constant efforts to progress. It's a place that reminds you of how important it is to preserve knowledge and values for future generations. But I won't take you too long now. Continue your walk around the Moravian Třebová, discover other beautiful corners of this city and enjoy every moment that history offers you. Thank you for taking this short trip with us.

Tips for visitors

To visit this Renaissance building we recommend the morning hours during the working week when the square is quieter and the light better paints the details of the facade. You can easily reach the city by car or public transport, and check the current connection in the traffic search engine. Parking is possible in the vicinity of the square on marked areas. Take with you comfortable shoes for walking on historic tiles and camera, because the best pictures will be taken from the opposite side of the square, where the overall architecture of the building will stand out. In the immediate vicinity of the monument is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is definitely worth a tour. For families with children, the location is suitable thanks to the proximity of an open area where children can relax, while the historical centre offers sufficient space for easy walking.
