Městská památková zóna Brno is a protected area in the wider centre of Brno, which consists of an imaginary fan surrounding a central city monument reservation from the west, north and east. It includes representative residential houses and residential areas from the 19th and 20th centuries and is registered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments under the number 2501.

This monument was announced in 2023 in order to protect the exteriors of valuable buildings from demolition or insensitive reconstruction and to preserve the quality of urban and public space. The announcement of the zone corrected the 2016 administrative error, when approximately 1300 buildings in Brno lost their monument protection by decision of the Ministry of Culture. This situation was definitively confirmed by the Supreme Administrative Court in 2020.

The zone includes the selected territories of the urban areas Brno-centre and Žabovřesky, parts Husovice and Černý Polí in the urban area Brno-north and marginally interferes with the urban areas of Jundrov, Kohoutovice and Královo Pole. There are two national cultural monuments on its territory: the Kounice Railways and Villa Tugendhat, which is also listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The proposal to announce the zone has been prepared by the National Heritage Institute since 2017 at the latest. The process was accompanied by discussions on the scope of protection. Political leadership of the city and the mayor of the city district Brno - the centre called for narrowing the zone, for example only in the territory of Masaryk district, Veverí Street and around Lužánky Park. The presentation of the city part Brno -north tried to include the Lěsná estate, but it failed.

In January 2021, the Monument Institute submitted a compromise proposal which introduced four levels of protection from the strictest A to the most benevolent D. Part of the Brno Exhibition Centre at Hall Z was excluded from the area under the agreement. The Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic issued a general measure on the declaration of the zone on 30 January 2023, with effect from 21 February 2023.

After the publication of the zone, the city of Brno and the cities of Brno-center and Brno-Královo The case against the Ministry of Culture with the argument that the zone is too strict and the process of publication was flawed. The Municipal Court in Prague rejected this action in February 2024. In August 2025, the Supreme Administrative Court rejected the subsequent appeal of the City of Brno and the related initiative of the City of Brno.

Today, the Brno City Monument Zone serves as a tool for maintaining the architectural value of a large part of the city. It is important in its ability to protect the urbanist whole and the specific significant buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries.

This monument zone is a key element in maintaining the historical character of Brno urban planning. Her visit offers the opportunity to observe the development of urban development and appreciate the architecture of representative villas and villas.

Welcome to Brno. You're standing in a place that's part of something much bigger than it looks. While your eyes may be looking at individual houses and streets, you are actually within a vast urban monument zone. This area is not just a set of buildings, but it is a living part of a city that has its own, very special form. If you look around you now, you can perceive the strange harmony that buildings in this area form. It's not just a coincidence that these buildings stick together so well. They are part of a protective circle that was created precisely to preserve this beautiful environment for future generations.

Imagine this conservation area as an imaginary fan. This fan does not open in one direction, but surrounds the heart of the city itself, the most valuable monument reservation, from its western, northern and eastern edges. This zone stretches across many different parts of the city. It includes the territory of Brno centre, but extends further to Zaboveves, Husovice or Black Fields. It even touches the edges of Jundrov, Kohoutovic or King's Pole. So it's a huge space that connects different parts of the city into a whole that has a common history and a common value.

The path to this area being recognised and protected was neither short nor simple. It took many years of effort, discussion and seeking the right path. It all began in the year two thousand seventeen, when the National Heritage Institute came up with the first proposal. The goal was to create a system that would maintain the quality of this urban space. Then followed a long debugging process. In the year two thousand twenty-one a proposal was put forward, which sought to find a compromise between the needs of modern life and the need to protect the past. This effort for balance was crucial. In the end, in the year two thousand and twenty-three, it succeeded and the zone was officially declared. Although legal disputes occurred in the year two thousand and four, when the city and its parts tried to challenge this decision at the Municipal Court in Prague, the protection of this area remains a fundamental issue for the whole city.

Now that you know the history of this decision, please pay attention to what you see right in front of you. If you look at the buildings that surround you, see if you can spot their outer appearance. This zone focuses mainly on what we see from the street. It protects exteriors, the parts of buildings that form the face of whole neighborhoods. Most of these buildings come from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These are representative tenement houses, which form a solid series of streets, and also beautiful villas, which are often located in quieter parts.

Pay attention to the details on the facades. Even if you cannot touch every stone, try to feel the rhythm of the windows, the shape of the entrance door or the way the buildings connect to the pavement. It is these elements that form the quality of public space. The aim of this protection is to prevent such valuable constructions from being destroyed or to repair them in a way which would not correspond to them. It is not about buildings being just museums, but about their external appearance being true to their original beauty and not about insensitive building interventions destroying the character of whole neighborhoods.

When you walk these streets, you can imagine thousands of stories that took place behind these facades. Even though today we don't know the names of all the architects who designed these houses, or all the people who lived in them, their presence is felt in every detail of the urban order. Each villa and every tenement house is witnessed by the growth of Brno, its flourishing during the period of industrial expansion and its transformation into a modern metropolis. These buildings are not just walls and roofs, they are the memoirs of the time when the city formed into the form we know today.

It may seem natural, but there is one interesting thing that shows how important it is to have the right records and decisions. In fact, the entire declaration of this zone in the year two thousand and twenty-three fixed one administrative error, which was already made in the year two thousand and sixteen. At the time, the decision of the Ministry of Culture was not entirely accurate, which could lead to certain parts of the city remaining without the necessary protection. Thanks to the fact that this error has finally been corrected, this protection is now solid and clear. It is proof that care for our heritage requires not only the heart, but also careful and proper work in the authorities.

Now, with a sound invitation, we will leave you to travel around this city. Let the atmosphere of these streets drift. Take a walk between these houses, which are the protection fan of Brno. Watch how the city's face changes, how the building style changes, and how the overall perception of space changes. Every other street you cross today can reveal a new view of how beautiful and rich our urban environment can be if we can take care of it together. I wish you a pleasant walk and many interesting discoveries while further exploring this wonderful city. I'll say goodbye and have a nice day.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the City Monument Zone Brno is in the spring or autumn season when the weather is pleasant and less humane. This time of year also offers beautiful vegetation and sunlight suitable for photography.

Parking in the vicinity of the monument is possible, but due to limited capacity we recommend using public transport. Urban buses and trams can be a convenient alternative; the current connection can be found in the online search engine.

When visiting the sights, remember the appropriate suit, because many buildings and spaces may not be completely protected from weather. Photographers should bring a camera with good optics to capture architectural details.

For photography are ideal times in the early morning or in the evening when the light is softer. The best places include central areas with historical buildings and parks that offer a charming background.

It is possible to visit Villa Tugendhat or Konce's college in the vicinity of the monument. These places are suitable for families with children who can find out more about Brno history and architecture.
