The former City Savings Bank in Jilemnice is a representative Art Nouveau building with elements of pseudorenesance. It was completed in 1911 according to the design of architect Jan Vejhěk. The object served as an important financial centre that actively supported local development and culture. Today it represents a significant architectural dominant of the elemonic square.

The predecessor of today's construction was a storey garb that died in a large fire in 1838. The inn U Lva, later renamed U White Rose, grew up in its place. In this house, a soprano Marie Laušmannová was born in 1855. The savings bank itself was established in Jilemnice in 1888 on the initiative of Mayor František X. Jerie. The institution was initially located in non-compliant premises, which led to a decision to build its own seat. In 1909, the savings bank purchased a inn at the White Rose and a nearby house no. 141. These objects were demolished to make room for a new building.

The architectural design of Jan Vejhěk materialized the corner one-storey house on a rectangular floor plan. The construction combines Art Nouveau curvature with pseudorenesance elements. The main corner facade is topped and equipped with a tripod with an outlay, entrance and decorated triangular shield. The dominant is the corner tower with double onion, gargoyles and decorative poppy. The roof and the tower are covered with shale. The façade is decorated with stucco painted champagne and figural motifs of the boy and girl in folk costumes. The side facade divides decorative shields with sov and bay plastic. In the interior there are paintings of authors Jan Leo and Vladimir Hraby.

Traffic in the new building started in November 1911. The institution played a key role in the development of the city. It financed the construction of an orphanage, an economic school, cooperative houses in Sporilov, an extension of the gymnasium, a hospital and a weaving school. After 1945 the savings bank was nationalized and incorporated into the State Savings Bank. The building subsequently served various purposes; There was, for example, a municipal library, a clothing shop or exhibition space. After 1990, the building became owned by Česká spořitelna, which left it in 2005. Since then, the building has been owned by JILEMNICE HOTEL, s.r.o. and remains largely unused and decaying.

Literary history also binds to the memory. Shortly after World War I, the writer Jaroslav Havlicek worked here. He returned to the environment of the savings house in his work, for example in the novel Petrolej lamp or in unfinished Wolf skin. In January 2021, the local community of MY WORLD, which placed informative signs on the windows and doors, highlighted the dismal situation.

Today, the building is inaccessible to the public, except for a small part of the ground floor, where the city information centre works. Although the object shows signs of decay and its future remains the subject of discussions about possible reconstruction, architectural details and historical significance make it an unoverlooked part of the urban monument zone. Visiting the square offers the opportunity to look at this Art Nouveau building from the outside and appreciate its craftsmanship, which is a testament to the city's ambition and prosperity in the early 20th century.

Welcome to Jilemnice! You are standing in front of one of the most famous monuments of our city - the City Savings House, which is a great example of Art Nouveau architecture with elements of pseudorenance. This representative building will impress you with its beautiful form and rich history.

Let's dive into its creation. In 1888, the City Savings Bank was founded to serve as a financial centre for the development and culture of Jilemnic. After the destruction of the original houses in this place in 1909 began the construction of a new building which was completed in 1911. The architect Jan Vejrych took inspiration from Art Nouveau and pseudorenesance, which is evident at every step.

Look up at the distinctive corner tower with shale roof. Note the rich stucco decorations and figural motifs that give the building a unique atmosphere. These elements are a testament to the artistic taste of the time and expertise of the architect.

This place is also associated with several key personalities such as František X. Jerie or Jaroslav Šolc, who had a major influence on the development of Jilemnic. The interesting thing is that before the construction of the savings bank, there was a storey garb that burned down in 1838, and later the inn where the famous soprano Marie Laušmannová was born.

Now remember that the Czech Savings Bank was located here until 2005. Although it is no longer its main location, the building still serves as a monument to the rich heritage and history of the city.

Let's move closer and look at the facade. Note the details that will help you better understand the architectural style and historical context of the building.

Let me invite you to explore Jilemnic again. There are many other interesting monuments and stories waiting to be discovered. I hope you enjoyed talking to us about this beautiful building. When we meet again, enjoy other aspects of the history and culture of Jilemnic!

Tips for visitors

The best time for an exterior tour is in the morning or late afternoon, when the sun highlights the plastic Art Nouveau details on the facade and does not cast too sharp shadows.

The Jilemnice can be transported by car or public transport; You can find the exact connection in the relevant traffic search engines.

Take with you a high-quality camera with wide-angle lens to capture the rich decoration of the building. The best light for shooting details of architecture is in a semi-clear sky that softens the contrast on the plaster.

In the immediate vicinity of the building you can visit the historical centre of Jilemnice, the Giant Museum in Jilemnice or the castle Jilemnice, which offer a deeper insight into the history of the region.

The walk through the historical centre is easy for families with children who can admire the decorative architecture of the building from the outside while exploring the city.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding area wakes up and the trees start to green, creating a fresh atmosphere. The light is soft and pleasant in this period to observe the details of the building. I recommend wearing layered clothes because the morning temperatures may still be low. The best time to walk is in the morning.

In the summer months the sun is strong and the days are very long, which gives the place a bright and lively look. The atmosphere is warm and the surrounding green is in full bloom. Dress lightly and choose a visit in the late afternoon when the heat is less painful and the shadows are longer.

Autumn brings the colors of gold and fog that create a mysterious and calm mood around it. It is good to prepare for colder and wetter weather, which is why waterproof shoes and warmer coats are suitable. The best is to take advantage of the time when the sun shines below, for beautiful colors on the facade.

Winter in this area brings the snow and silence surrounding the city. The light is weak in this period, and the days are short, which creates a very calm and gloomy atmosphere. Dress very warm, including the hat and gloves. The most suitable visit is around noon to make the most light during the day.
