City fortification in Soběslavi is a medieval 14th century wall, which is a key part of the historical face of the city. This monument is located in the territory of the village Soběslav and is remarkable by its well preserved park walls, bylaws and two baskets. The fortification was built in order to protect the city during the Hussite Wars, when twice the burning and damage to the walls.

The first mention of the city fortification dates back to 1293. An important event for its further development was the acquisition of the privileges of Soběslav in 1390, which led to the construction of a city fortification in accordance with the pattern of royal cities. The beginning of the wall construction began at the end of the 14th century. During Hussite wars, the city was burned twice and the walls were damaged, but they were repaired in the 15th century by Jan of Rožmberk during the economic prosperity of the city.

The architecture of the fortifications is characterized by the main and park wall, a water moat 13 to 15 metres wide and a wall which was covered by another wall. The main wall had a width of 1.8 metres and a height of 6 to 8 metres, while the park wall was 70 cm thick. The moat now reaches a depth of 3 meters and is regularly maintained. There were two large gates on the north and south side, while there were smaller foot gates on the east and west side. The fortification complex also contained seven basements.

In the 17th century, seven towers were built, which contributed to strengthening the defence capabilities of the city fortification. At the beginning of the 19th century there was a parking lot, which led to the demolition of gates, fortn and parts of walls.

Today is the city fortification in Soběslavi well preserved especially on the north, south and east side. The west side has only small remnants of the wall. The park walls and the moat stands are well preserved until today, which is an interesting thing for visitors.

City fortification in Soběslavi is worth visiting not only because of its historical values, but also because it provides a view of architectural skill and strategic planning from the past. If you visit this monument, you can appreciate its historical importance and contribute to maintaining the monument for future generations.

This monument is not only an important part of the region's cultural heritage, but also a testament to historical events and changes in the region. It is a reminder of the past that teaches us to evaluate our present times and ensure the protection of important historical sites for future generations.

Welcome to a place full of history and beauty - city fortification in Soběslavi. Under your feet is the long-standing presence of medieval walls that tell stories from the past of this Czech city. When you notice the first traces of these ancient walls, you feel like you've returned to the 14th century when these defensive structures were built to protect the city and its inhabitants.

Let's dive into the history of this fortification. The first mention of the city fortification in Soběslavi dates back to 1293, but real development began at the end of the 14th century, when the city gained privileges similar to those of the royal cities, which led to the construction of the wall. These defensive structures were crucial during the Hussite wars, where twice the burning and damage to the walls occurred. After these events Jan z Rožmberka contributed to their restoration and preservation in the 15th century.

Look up at the remains of medieval architecture that are now visible. Although many of the original elements are no longer fully preserved, you could imagine a huge park with its fortresses and gates that once protected this place. In the 17th century, seven towers were built, which further strengthened the defensive ability of fortifications.

Among the key personalities associated with this historical monument is Jan z Rožmberka. His decision to restore and maintain the walls in the 15th century was necessary to preserve this local heritage, allowing Soběslavi to survive the following medieval storms.

The interesting fact is that although the walls have undergone many changes and renovations, they remain an important part of the historical face Soběslavi. It is a reminder of the strong will and determination of their builders and protectors.

Now that you've explored this fascinating stretch of history, I invite you to explore the city again. Soběslav offers many other hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. Enjoy your adventure and let history live around you. When we meet again, you'll have more stories to tell. God!

Tips for visitors

For the best experience we recommend a visit in late afternoon hours, when the sun at a lower angle illuminates the texture of the old stone and creates interesting shadows on the walls. Ideal is also to visit a place in spring or autumn season when the weather is more pleasant for outdoor walks.

You can easily reach the city fortification by car and public transport.

It is necessary to wear high-quality and comfortable shoes for a comfortable survey of the walls because historical terrain is often uneven. If you are planning a longer stay, we recommend that you bring water and, if necessary, small refreshments that you can buy within the city.

Photographing is very expensive in this place. The best light for images of historical architecture can be found during the so-called gold watch just before sunset. You can get great footage from places where you can see the contrast between the medieval stone and the city pavement.

For families with children a walk around the walls represents a great opportunity for historical education in practice. Children can discover details of the old fortifications, which can be the basis for their own adventure stories about the past of the city.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring the walls will be surrounded by fresh greenery and blooming flowers that contradict the stone surface. The atmosphere is full of expectations and the light is fine, which is ideal for observing the details of the construction. We recommend to dress more layers of clothing because the weather is usually variable, and set off in the morning when the air is purest.

The summer season brings rich green crowns of trees and intense sunlight that highlights the texture of old walls. Expect more visitors in the main season, which is why it is best to come first thing in the morning to avoid heat and clumps of people. Don't forget light clothes, hat and plenty of fluids.

In autumn, the surroundings of the fortifications turn into golden and brown tones, while morning fog gives the memory a mysterious touch. It's a time of peace and melancholy when the walls are less burdened by tourists. Waterproof shoes and wind jackets are suitable, with the best atmosphere ruling during late afternoon hours.

In winter, the walls cause a sharp and monumental impression, especially if they are covered by a layer of snow or a freezing ice. The lighting is cold and the days are short, creating an intrusive contrast to the dark stone. It is necessary to have warm thermo-linens and solid shoes, and we recommend checking shortened opening times.
