House 311 in Mikulášovice is a cultural monument representing folk architecture at the end of the 18th century. It is located in the village Mikulášovice and its original state and historical value attracts visitors. This pedestal house is oriented towards the next street and the Mikulášovice stream, giving it a distinctive look.

It was built at the end of the 18th century as a typical example of folk building for Šluknovský zkůzka and Upper Lusatia. The house did not undergo interference, so it kept many original elements both inside and outside. In the second half of the 19th century, the left-hand part of the economy was converted into a residential area and a shale tile was added. In the 20th century, the roof cover was replaced - the only significant change that affected the original state.

Architecturally, the house boasts grafted floors and a raked floor. The outside walls are lined with shale and fibre cement templates, the inner layout is three-piece and contains valuable original elements such as forged locks, carved railings and tile stove. The roof is covered with a hambalic crover with a simple stool, an Ondrei cross and a central binding.

The house is privately owned and, despite its historical importance, it serves for living. Its architecture includes ornamental designs on both the main facade and the eastern shield, which gives the building a unique character.

On 20 April 2005 the house was declared a cultural monument, confirming its value not only for the local population but also for the wider public. Today the monument is accessible to visitors who are interested in the history and architecture of the region.

House 311 in Mikulášovice is not only an important cultural heritage but also a lively reminder of changes and developments in the area for centuries. The visit offers a unique opportunity to explore history and architecture closely and appreciate their preservation even at present.

Welcome to Nicholas. Stop for a moment, take a breath and feel the atmosphere of this place. Right now, you're standing in front of a house with the number three hundred one, which is much more than just a building. He's a silent witness to history telling us the story of how people lived in these border areas centuries ago. If you look at the house, you may perceive its modesty, but at the same time, its incredible resilience. He is a typical representative of folk architecture, which has come out of the ranks of other buildings with his authenticity and how faithfully he retains the elements of his time.

Let's move in time together. Imagine the end of the 18th century. It was at this time that this house was built. At that time, there were no architects in today's sense who would draw complex plans in studios. The house was built by local craftsmen and residents themselves according to the testing of their ancestors and the needs of the environment. The goal was to create a place that will protect against frost, wind and rainfall, while at the same time working for everyday life and management. This house was designed from the beginning as a so-called pedestal house, which was a very practical way of building at the time.

Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you. Look at the bottom of the building. The ground floor is grafted. That means it's built from massive wooden beams that fit exactly together. The grafting provided stability to the house and kept the winter warm. It's the foundation on which the whole house stands and which gives it this typical rustic character. But if you look up, you'll see something else. The floor is paved. Disaster is a technique in which a wooden frame is created and gaps between beams are filled with other material. This contrast between the grafted bottom floor and the raked top floor is one of the most valuable elements of this house and shows the mastery of the then popular construction.

Notice also how the house is oriented. It doesn't just stand at random, but its disposition goes to the next street and the Mikulášovice stream. Water was a key source of life and work in the past, so it was natural for the house and stream to be adjacent. Now look carefully at the outer walls. You'll see they're not just bare wood. They are lined with shale and also fibre cement templates. Slate is a material that is very typical in this area. It is durable and hard, and its use here is not random. The shale tile was added later, in the second half of the nineteenth century, to better protect the house from unfavourable weather while giving it a certain aesthetic look.

When we think about how the house has changed over the years, we find that he, too, has had to respond to the needs of his people. There was an interesting change in the same second half of the nineteenth century. The part of the house that was originally used for economic purposes was converted into a residential area. This tells us that the families that lived here grew, or that the manera of their life and work has changed. The house thus adapted to new times without losing its original face. Even in the twentieth century, modifications were made, for example, the roof cover was replaced to keep the building dry and safe for future generations.

Although we don't know the names of the particular people who built this house, or the names of all the families who found refuge in it, we can follow through the details of the building. Every beam, every stone of slate and every connection in the levelling is a result of human work and an effort to survive in a challenging mountain environment. This house is not just a pile of material, it's a monument to anonymity, which is so typical of folk architecture. It's the stories of thousands of strangers who made the face of our villages.

The interior layout of the house is also very valuable. It is three-piece, which means that the space was divided into three basic parts, each of which had a specific designation. Although we are now looking at the house from the outside, this internal structure also affects how the building operates from the outside. It is a harmonious whole where everything has its place and its purpose.

You may be wondering why this particular house is so important. The answer lies in his preservation. Many similar buildings have died over the years or have been so fundamentally rebuilt that they have lost their original form. House number three hundred and one, however, kept a number of original elements both external appearance and interior space. This value led to the house being officially declared a cultural monument on the 20th April of the year two thousand and five. This act recognised its importance for the whole area and ensured its protection for future generations.

It's a fascinating idea that this house survived wars, regime changes, and technological revolutions. While the world was changing around him, he stood as a reminder of simplicity and functionality. It's kind of a quiet mystery in history that makes us think about what's really permanent in life. What of today's buildings will remain in the condition of this house from the late eighteenth century in 200 years?

Now, I'm asking you to take another look at the house. Try to imagine what sound the stream must have had at the time the house was born and how the wood smelled in the grafted ground floor. Feel the texture of shale boards and imagine the hands of craftsmen who carefully attached them here one by one. This house is a bridge between us and our ancestors.

Thank you for accompanying this short trip to the history of folk construction. I hope this house has inspired you to pay more attention to the small but important monuments surrounding us. Now invited to further explore the area of Mikulášovice. Go through the surrounding alleys, listen to the stream and look for the other traces of the past that this beautiful village hides within you. I wish you a pleasant continued journey and many new discoveries. Goodbye.
