Muzeum lidových staveb v Kouřimi is a rural scandal that gathers building monuments from Bohemia dating from the 17th to 19th century. This object represents a variety of types of folk architecture and serves as a place for national programmes and film activities.

Established in 1972 as part of the Regional Museum in Cologne, it was originally created as a rescue project for monuments of folk architecture from areas that were to be flooded during the construction of the dam tank Švihov. Construction from Posázaví, Central Povltaví and Podblanicka were transferred to the museum. After the opening of the public in 1976, the focus changed to the presentation of buildings from all over the Czech Republic, but this proved unrealistic due to limited space and inconsistency of objects. Therefore, the collection area after 1990 was restricted to Bohemia only.

The area contains fourteen larger residential and economic buildings, among the oldest is a nine-sided grafted barn from Želejov from 1648. Other important monuments include a 12-side barn from Želejov from 1660 and a full-length shouchar from Kornatic from 1774 with a unique gagged vault. Expositions include various types of construction, from the cottage from Budč to the property from Týřovice near Rakovnik, mentioned already in the 16th century. In interiors are installed exhibitions such as a rural school from the end of the 19th century or a household of a small cottage boy. The techniques include a combination of three construction methods, for example at the Stone House near Jílová. The complex is also equipped with a fully grafted forge from Old Bydžov from 1774, presented as a separate building.

The museum manager is the Central Bohemian Region through the Regional Museum in Cologne. In 1992, there was a restitution claim on most of the land, resulting in a lengthy lawsuit with the Lonski family, which was resolved only in 2012 by agreement. This agreement allowed the site to be restored according to a new concept. In 1996 the whole area was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The museum is today profiled as the Museum of the Czech Village, which brings life in the countryside from the early New Age to the beginning of the 20th century. The first stage of reconstruction was completed in June 2016 and included, for example, the construction of the houses from Podbrdsko and Českobrod, the rebuilding of the Marian column from Koňovice, and the transfer and restoration of the statue of St. Donat from Svatbín. The area is regularly used for national programmes and serves as an authentic environment for filmmakers.

The museum offers a unique view of the history and social specificity of the Czech countryside through real historical buildings, where the development of folk architecture and traditional culture can be observed.

Welcome to Kouřimi. You've just entered a space that is much more than just a collection of old buildings. You're standing in front of a gateway to the past that was saved from flooding and brought here to tell stories about our ancestors' lives. Feel this atmosphere of calm and discretion. There is a country scandal surrounding you that will immediately take you to another century. Look around you at the diversity of the structures that stand here. Every house, every silvery and every construction you see now has its own reason why it is here, and each one is witnessing a different period of Czech countryside.

To understand why this place looks like this, we have to go back to 1972. Imagine the situation back then. It was a time of great change and also of great sacrifice. As part of the planned construction of the dam tank Švihov threatened that many valuable historical buildings from surrounding areas would simply disappear below the water level. In order not to lose this architecture forever, a rescue project was created in 1972. This scandal was not only founded as a museum, but as a rescue mission. People knew at the time that if these monuments were not transported and renovated, their history would end in silence underwater. Thanks to this decision and the efforts of the experts at the time, you can see these objects with your own eyes today.

Over time, this place has become a stable cultural point. Already in 1976, the scandal opened to the general public and people could explore life for the first time in a folk environment. The year 1996 was an important milestone, when the whole area was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This gave him serious credit and confirmed that what you see here is an extremely valuable treasure for our country. Although the museum had to meet various challenges over the years, such as land disputes, 2012 brought a new beginning. That was when the new concept of renewal of the complex was launched, which allowed us to see the museum in its present, rich form.

Now pay attention to the architecture surrounding you. Notice how the shapes and structures of the buildings you're going through change. This complex is not uniform, but it represents a variety of types of folk architecture that developed in Czech countries from the 17th to 19th century. That means you're going through centuries right now. You can see the differences between older, rougher shapes and newer, already more decorative or more technically advanced structures. Take a look at the details of the facade of the buildings, see how the walls were built and what materials were used to secure housing and economic space. Although we do not know the names of the particular architects who designed these structures, their championships are visible in every cut of wood and in every stone base.

Although you will not move in these buildings like a modern house, try to imagine the people who lived here. Even if the names of specific builders or residents of these houses are not listed in our books, their presence here is felt at every step. This place is now profiled as the Museum of the Czech Village. That means we're not just trying to show empty walls, we're trying to bring your whole lifestyle closer. Imagine getting up in the morning, working hard in the field, celebrating together or the silence of the evening hours in these areas. You are here as guests in the history of the daily life of the inhabitants of the Czech countryside from the early New Age.

You may find one interesting thing that gives this place a completely different dimension. You may have noticed that some parts of the complex seem to be the perfect set for telling stories. This is because this scandal is not just a static place for inspections. Thanks to its authenticity and historical loyalty, it serves as an ideal place for various national programmes, but also as a very popular scene for film activities. Many movies and TV shows use these historic environments to give you a sense of the real past. So if you look at a building, remember, it may not just be a monument, but it may also be a game space where legends are revived.

But now you have no end but rather the beginning of a new journey. In front of you, there are still many other paths, houses and gardens waiting for your discovery. I suggest you continue your slow passage through the area. Get carried away by the atmosphere, stop by the buildings that address you with their shape, and try to imagine in your mind how they lived a few hundred years ago. Every step can lead you to something new. Thank you for choosing to visit this place and become part of its history. We wish you a pleasant and inspiring walk through our rural world.

Themed route

Route: Kouřim and its historical core

Since there is no specific surroundings in the entry, we focus exclusively on the main destination and its immediate surroundings in the centre of the village Kouřim.

1. Muzeum lidových staveb v Kouřimi (museum) The main point of your trip, where you can see authentic rural buildings transferred from various parts of the Czech Republic. The exhibition offers a unique view of the traditional way of life, craft and architecture of the past centuries in the historical environment.

2. Square of Peace (Space) They are immediately adjacent to the museum and form the heart of the city. It is an ideal place for a short break where you can admire the Baroque facades of the surrounding houses and feel the atmosphere of this historic mansion.

3. Church of St. Bartholomew (sacral monument) Located in the immediate vicinity of the square and the museum. This dominant building with rich history complements the image of the medieval and Baroque heritage Kouřimi and offers a view of the city from a height.

4. Town Hall (historical building) There is also a Renaissance town hall on the square, which is a symbol of the city administration. Its architectural style contrasts with folk buildings in the museum and points to the development of urban culture in the region.

5. Trench and fortification (historical installation) The edge of the square and the museum are lined with the remains of the historic moat and fortifications that protected the city in the past. Walk this part allows you to understand the strategic position of Kouřimi and its defence structure.

This route is compact and allows one afternoon to explore both the popular and the urban heritage of Kouřimi without the need to leave the historical centre.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings fresh green and awakening nature that surrounds historical cottages. Soft spring light is ideal for photo lovers who want to capture details of wooden structures in natural context. Since the weather can be variable during this period, I recommend choosing layered clothing that can be easily adjusted by temperature. It's the perfect time for a quieter tour without big crowds.

In the summer months the atmosphere is the most lively thanks to the full bloom of vegetation and intense sunlight. In the main summer season, however, the number of visitors is the highest, so it is best to arrive at the beginning of the morning to avoid the biggest traffic and heat. Remember the headgear, sun protection and comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain between buildings.

Autumn turns the museum into a varied palette of golden and brown shades, which gives the place a nostalgic and calm mood. The morning fog between the trees creates a poetic atmosphere, but at the same time they can limit the view. It is advisable to take a windbreaker and warmer layer of clothing, as it can be cooled in an open space. Plan a visit so that you can use as much daylight as possible before the break starts soon.

The winter season offers a completely different, until quiet experience, where trees are without leaves and architecture is perceived in a more raw light. If the snow comes, the monument looks like a fairy tale, but the cold can be considerable. It is necessary to take very warm clothes and quality shoes to protect against moisture.
