Hradiště u svatého Jiří Hillfort
Hradiště u svatého Jiří is an early medieval fortification on the southeastern edge of Kouřim, in the Kolín District. Established around the end of the 10th century by the Přemyslids, it served as a significant administrative center when Stará Kouřim was declining. Today, only unremarkable remnants remain, but the site has been protected as a cultural monument since 1965.
The origins of Hradiště u svatého Jiří date back to the late 10th century, during which the Přemyslids consolidated control over Kouřimsko. This period marked significant political and cultural development across Europe as regions established stronger centralized powers. The fortification was strategically positioned on an island formed by the confluence of the Výrovka and Ždánický potok streams, enhancing its defensive capabilities.
Architecturally, Hradiště u svatého Jiří initially consisted of a single enclosure covering approximately 6.2 hectares. The perimeter defenses are visible today as terrain ridges, with a partially preserved transverse rampart from the 12th century featuring a 2.5-meter-wide stone wall built dry and topped by wooden chambers ending in a palisade structure. This design divided the site into a southern acropolis and a northern suburb, where a church dedicated to Saint Clement once stood.
Throughout its history, Hradiště u svatého Jiří experienced various administrative changes. During Prince Jaromír's reign, coins were minted at the site, indicating its economic significance. The first written mention of the fortification dates back to the mid-11th century, and by 1167-1177, known castellans served there, highlighting its continued importance as a regional administrative center.
The site also holds several historical curiosities. It was inhabited as early as the 7th and 6th centuries BCE by members of the Bylany culture, demonstrating long-term human activity in the area. In its later phase, a smithy was identified in the eastern part of the suburb, providing evidence of economic activities such as metalworking.
Today, Hradiště u svatého Jiří stands as a testament to the region's medieval past. While only remnants of its original structures remain, the site offers valuable insights into the historical and cultural development of Kouřimsko under Přemyslid rule. Visitors can explore this culturally protected monument and reflect on its significance in shaping the history of the area.
Hradiště u svatého Jiří is a fascinating destination for those interested in medieval history and architecture. Its preservation as a cultural monument ensures that future generations can appreciate its historical value. A visit to this site offers a unique opportunity to connect with the past and explore the legacy of the Přemyslid dynasty in Bohemia.

On the southeastern edge of Kouřim lies an early medieval stronghold named after the Church of Saint George. Only faint remains of fortifications have been preserved from it. Since 1965, the entire site has been protected as a cultural monument.
People inhabited the promontory above the confluence of the Výrovka and Ždánický streams already in the seventh and sixth centuries before our era. They were members of the Bylany culture. Another sparse settlement appears only in the seventh and eighth centuries. In the first half of the tenth century, when the development of nearby Stará Kouřim was at its peak, an unfortified settlement stood here. The pottery and jewelry found there reveal close contacts with Libice.
The Přemyslides most likely founded the fortified stronghold at the end of the tenth century, when they took control of the Kouřim region. Stará Kouřim then lost its importance, and the new stronghold became the administrative centre of the region in the eleventh century. Under Prince Jaromír, coins were minted here. From the years 1167 and 1177, we know the names of local castellans. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Děpoltici, a collateral branch of the Přemyslides, may have resided here.
The stronghold initially formed a single unit covering six point two hectares. Later, a cross-rampart most likely divided it into a southern acropolis and a northern outer ward. The rampart is a remnant of a fortification wall from the twelfth century. It consisted of a dry-stone wall, which was followed by wooden chambers. The entire wall was ten to twelve metres wide.
The outer ward bears the name of the Church of Saint Clement, which stood near the northern gate. It was densely populated. A square timber-framed house surrounded by huts stood in the west, while economic and craft buildings stood in the east. One of them served as a smithy. This is evidenced by a pit with slag and iron tools, which could have been a furnace. Even in the twelfth century, a blacksmith lived and worked here in a semi-subterranean dwelling with stone foundations and a cellar.
A manor house protected by a palisade stood on the acropolis in the eleventh century. Its main residential building measured approximately eight by six metres and had a tamped floor. There was also the Church of Saint George, first mentioned in 1295. It could have been built as early as the eleventh century, from quarried stone of opalite and granite. People were buried around it. At the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, it was rebuilt as a gallery church and connected to a residential tower-like structure. From this church comes a sculpture called the Lions of Kouřim. It is a remnant of one of the oldest preserved three-dimensional sculptures in Bohemia.
