Na Hrázi a Příkop was the former suburban district of Brno, which was located in the space between today's streets Koliště, Milady Horáková, Tvěp and Potávka. Until 1941 it was also a separate cadastral territory. Today, this site is part of the Zabrdovic and the city part of Brno-center, but still retains the historical memory of its unusual double identity.

Around today's street The settlement was settled in the Middle Ages, but the settlement ceased because of the Swedish siege of Brno in 1643 and 1645. After the Thirty Years War, the territory was used to build a large baroque bastion fortification. New development came only in the late 18th century when a new suburb began to emerge. The suburb of Příkop was created specifically in 1786 by the parking of the yard of Charles Court, which originally belonged to the Jesuit Greek estate, and also by the demise of the Mitrovska Garden, which was located in these places. The construction of the Příkom was situated as a one-way street on the east side of the road (today Koliště), which was established in the mid-1970s.

The suburb of Na Hraz formed a small settlement on the way from Brno to Zábrdovice and Husovice. It was located along the Hutter pond dam, which was dried out in 1782. The original mill under the dam was turned into a inn and houses formed here gradually forming a new residential zone. Both suburbs were under the administration of the Brno Municipality and became part of the city in 1850.

The buildings of these suburbs were typically classicist at first - it was a single-storey or ground-floor building occupied mainly by workers. During the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century it was gradually replaced by modern tenement houses. In 1903, tram traffic was launched on Milady Horáková Street. In the 1880s, Pozávka od Lužánky was honed, which allowed new buildings to be created in the areas of today's streets of Příkop and Přížák.

In the early 1930s, a new functionalist trauma hospital was built in Ponávka Street. The changing face of the city district has continued in recent decades. In the 1980s, most of the west side of Příkop Street was demolished and in the following decade the IBC Brno business-administrative complex was created.

The Catastral Territory Na Hrázi a Příkop was abolished in 1941 during the cadastral reform and the area was integrated into the City of Brno. Since the end of the 1960s, it has been one of Zábrdovice, where it is a living part of the urban structure that shows how Brno developed over centuries.

Welcome to a place that seems to be lost between today's ruckus and the historic tracks of Brno. You are standing in front of one of the most interesting but also the most hidden suburban departments of the city - the settlement Na Hrázi a Příkop. At first glance, it may remind you of an ordinary street in Brno, but it is here that you encounter history that stretches to the end of the eighteenth century. Let's go together and see what this location is hiding.

In front of you is a part of the former suburb of Příkop, which originated on the lands of the former Charles Court - the lands that once belonged to the Jesuit estate in Greece. In 1786 it was decided to park these properties, and so a new estate was built here. At the same time, Hutter's pond dried up in 1782, which had a major impact on the emergence of the area. While the pond disappeared, his dam became one of the first elements that gave place his name - on the Hraz. It was originally a simple settlement along the road towards Zabrdovice and Husovice, which gradually grew.

Let's take a look at what he's offering you today. The Trench and Na Hraz are today mainly a building typical of the big cities - apartment houses that replaced the original classicist buildings. Some of them are still perceived in the atmosphere of the streets, such as Milady Horáková Street, where the first Brno tram started in 1903. It became a symbol of modernization, which gradually changed this area. Notice how different epochs intersect here - from the original plots to today's houses.

Now pay attention to some of the key stories related to this place. One is the fate of Koliště Street, which disappeared during the Swedish siege of Brno in 1643-1645. During these war events, the entire area was badly damaged, and so the original settlement never recovered. Another interesting fact is that at the site of today's settlement there was originally a mill under the Hutter pond dam, which was dried up in 1782. This mill was one of the first elements that worked here, and its existence shows how the area gradually changed from natural space to human housing.

Even though there are no remnants of the original installation left behind, you can imagine what was once there. The street Todkop was one of the first to start building, and gradually there appeared houses that were typical of the time. In 1850 the suburb was officially incorporated into Brno, which meant it became part of the city. This has had a major impact on the further development of this area.

In 1930 there was built an accident hospital in Ponavka Street, which became an important medical facility for the inhabitants of Brno. This hospital was one of the elements that contributed to making this part of Brno an important centre not only for housing, but also for services.

Now let's look at one of the most interesting mysteries that relates to this place. In 1980, part of the building was demolished in Příkop Street in order to create a new building of the IBC Brno complex. This move has meant the loss of many historic houses that have been here for hundreds of years. Despite this, however, this location still offers the opportunity to know the history of Brno, which is hidden here among today's streets.

Let's take a look at what's yet to come. Na Hrázi a Příkop is a place where different layers of history meet - from the 18th century to modern urban development. If you want to get to know this place in more detail, you can go down the surrounding streets and see how the development has changed. Stop at the tram stop on Milady Horáková street, where in 1903 a historic vehicle was first launched, which had a major impact on the life of the inhabitants.

If you like how history intersects with today's life, you can also go near the Emergency Hospital, which was built in 1930. This building is one example of how this area has become an important health centre.

When you say good-bye from here, don't forget, you just went through a place that has a rich history. Na Hrázi a Příkop is a symbol of how Brno changed and how different epochs were reflected here. If you like this location, you can go on further trips around Brno, where you will be offered other interesting places full of history.

Thank you for seeing us at this historic place. When we meet again, perhaps on another corner of Brno, where the gems of the past are also hidden. Good trip!

Imagine going back to the past. The city of Brno is completely different from what we know today. Na Hrázi a Příkop is a former suburban district that was once a separate cadastral territory.

It's like there was a house where a poor craftsman lived with a wife and three children. They were good people who worked hard and tried to feed families. When the kids went to school, they had smiles from neighbors who gave them apples or eggs on the way. Then at night they heard the magic singing from the chapel that stood in the middle of the neighborhood.
