Okresní soud Praha-západ Courthouse
Okresní soud Praha-západ is located in the historic Classicist Palace of Lažanski from Buková in Karmelitská street on Prague's Malá Strana. This two-storey building was created by combining four original Renaissance townhouses. It is important in its architecture, which combines baroque and classicist elements.
The original Renaissance building was almost completely restored to the cost of Karel Maximilian Lažanski after the fire in 1687-1688. Since then, the object has gradually changed and adapted to its new functions, maintaining a representative form.
The palace is characterized by regular courtyard and details referring to Tuscan buildings, especially for semi-circular windows and portals. The ground floor of the building is barefoot and floors are broken by the ledge. The entrance portal is decorated with pilasters, behind which is a three-boat vestibule with four canned columns. The Rococo statue of St. John Nepomucký is located in the right wing of the building.
The history of the construction is closely linked to education. In 1747 there was a Conservatory, a girls' education institution with the Chapel of Our Lady of Pain in the courtyard. After 1784 the building served as a high school with a botanical garden and later as a girls' industrial school. Over the years, it has been remodeled for administration needs many times, retaining many baroque and classical elements. After a period of government in the 20th century, since 1990 it became the seat of the current district court.
The District Court shall act as a court of the first instance in all criminal and civil matters, except for the specialised agenda entrusted to the Regional Court in Prague. These include, for example, the most serious crimes, insolvency proceedings, corporate disputes, competition or intellectual property. The district of the court comprises the territory of all the municipalities of Praha- west and the municipality of Dolany nad Vltavou.
The building has been registered as a real-estate cultural monument since 1964. The historic palace in the heart of the Small Party presents an interesting combination of architecture and public administration. To this day, the details of this place still suggest a long history.

Architectural development
Originally, four Renaissance houses were merged into one composition, which, after a fire in 1687, gained a classical form with baroque details. In the 18th century, the interiors underwent adaptations for school purposes, while the original facade elements, such as Tuscan portals and Pilasters, were preserved. The subsequent reconstruction for administrative needs in the 20th century supplemented modern equipment without disturbing the historical character of the building.

Welcome to the heart of historic Prague, in one of those places where time seems to be stopped and where every tile under your footsteps tells stories hundreds of years ago. You are standing right on the Malá Strana, on Karmelitská Street, and right in front of you is an impressive building, which today serves as the seat of the district court for the western part of our city. At first glance, it may seem to you as a firm, stationary and serious structure that dominates the surrounding space by its presence, but believe me, its history is much more vivid and colorful than it might seem at first glance. Feel the atmosphere, the weight of history that hangs on this place, and look at the facade knowing that right now you're facing many dramatic and noble events.
Let us now return together deep into the past to understand how this palace really came into being. Imagine that this building has never been just one piece as you know it today. In the original state, during the Renaissance, there were four separate townhouses. It was the houses of people who lived here, worked and built their lives in the rhythm of the city back then. This neighborhood was very lively at the time, full of merchants and everyday excitement. But fate was cruel. In the years of a thousand and six hundred and eighty-seven and eighty-four, this area was hit by a devastating fire. The fire hit these houses in an unknown way and destroyed almost everything around here. But something had to come out of the ashes and debris to bring the neighborhood back to life. And so it happened. Thanks to the great nobility of Karel Maximilian Lažanski, this building was almost completely restored. He was the one who decided that out of these four broken and damaged houses, one magnificent and united palace. It was thanks to his financial support and will that the building could transform so radically and gain its present face, which gives the impression of grandeur and stability.
Now pay attention to the architecture itself, which you are now observing. Take a look at the facade and see how different styles are blended in, which are flowing into each other. Although the main finding of the building is classical, in its details you will still find traces of Baroque and Rococo influences. Notice those half-circle windows that give the walls softness and rhythm. Also look at pilasters, those vertical outputs that decorate the walls. These pilasters are not just decorations; they give the whole building a sense of strength, grandeur and a clear structure. If you turn now and look at the right wing of the building, you'll find something really special. In the drawer of the wall, in the so-called nickel, there is a beautiful Rococo statue of St. John Nepomuk. This statue is like the silent guardian of this place. Its fine lines and movement in stone are a typical feature of the rococo style, which brings to a serious and strict building a touch of elegance, lightness and unexpected playfulness.
However, this palace was not always the seat of the authorities. His fate was complex and full of unexpected changes that reflected the needs of the then society. In the eighteenth century, namely in the year one thousand seven hundred forty-seven, something very important happened here for the culture and art of the city. There was a conservatory. Imagine the sounds of music that were carried through these narrow streets and through the windows of this palace. It was people dedicated to music who sought a path to perfection here. One hundred and thirty-seven years later, in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty-four, the building turned into a completely different institution. She became a gymnasium, a school for young people. And most interesting, at that time there was a botanical garden. Imagine the oasis in the green, the smell of different plants and leaves that were in the middle of a dense urban development. It was a place of learning, but also peace and nature, where study duties mixed with the beauty of a living garden.
It is fascinating to see how this building has constantly adapted to the needs of time and how simple townhouses have become a noble residence, then a school and finally a state office. Each of these ages left an invisible mark on her walls. Even though the building is so firm and still today, in its details there is a hidden story about fire, nobility and a great desire for education. That's why in the year one thousand nine hundred sixty-four she was listed as a cultural monument. It is a recognition that this palace is not just an ordinary building but a living and indispensable witness to the history of our city.
I hope that this brief insight into the past, which we have just experienced together, has intrigued you and left you with many interesting thoughts in your head. This building is just one of the many treasures the Little Party offers you every step of the way. So continue along Carmelite Street, look up at the facades, see the details and let yourself be carried away by the beauty of this historic place. Thank you for spending this moment with us. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations
In spring, the building will be surrounded by fresh green and fine light, which will highlight the details of the facade. The atmosphere is full of hope and awakening. I recommend visiting the palace in the morning, when the air is the cleanest. Put on light layers because the weather is variable.
The summer season brings sharp sun and intense colors that give the building a monumental look. There are the most people in the centre of Prague at this time, so it is best to come first thing in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds. Choose light and breathable substances so that you don't feel uncomfortable in the heat.
The autumn turns into golden tones and light becomes softer and nostalgic. The building is very dignified in this mess. It's practical to carry a scarf or umbrella in case of dry weather. The ideal time to visit is late afternoon.
In winter, the palace is cold and strict, which underlines its historical character, especially when it attacks snow. The inner spaces then appear more cosy. Don't forget the warm clothes and the tight shoes.
