Pacoldova vápenka is a former industrial complex in Prague-Great Chuchli, which is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This object is distinguished by its technical solution according to Professor Jiří Pacold's patent, which enabled efficient processing of unsorted limestone.

The area was built on the basis of the Czech technology patent Jiří Pacold (1834-1907). The first kilns of this type were created in the Great Chuchli before 1880, when only circular kilns were promoted in the industry.

The object consists of two connected double limestone furnaces. Each one has two separate cylindrical shafts, which end up with a pair of chimneys. In a third of the height of the shaft, there are three grate stoves and at the heel of each kiln are two pick holes. For the firing of limestone, which was extracted in a nearby quarry under Homolka, a hand rail with a 450 millimeter gauge was used. The material was loaded into the kilns by means of elevators and catwalks, but not preserved over time.

After 1948, the premises were transferred to state property, which led to its gradual decay. In 1966 the limestone was declared a technical monument, but its condition was very bad; parts of the walls were partially collapsed and had to be supported by metal belts. There was also the destruction of rare chamotte linings and weighing of garbage. At the end of the 1970s, the building became property of ONV Praha 5. The efforts to restore the production of special structures for the reconstruction of historical objects have been blocked due to exhalations from nearby Radatino cement plant. The employees of the Department of the Protection of the Industrial Heritage of the National Technical Museum and students of the Czech Technical Museum, led by architect Tomáš Šenberg, who worked out a study to repair and plant the building in the landscape. After 1989, the limestone was returned to the new owner in restitution, who made the most necessary repairs.

Production in the premises was stopped at the beginning of World War I, but thanks to trader Šuran it was restored in 1935. The final end of operation occurred in 1938 when production moved to circular limestone in Hlučepích. In the second half of the 20th century, the complex was used as a film set for shooting comedy and mystery films, for example for the film Top Secret Premiere of director Martin Frič.

Pacoldova vápenka is a rare example of industrial heritage and technical innovation of the 19th century. Its visit offers insight into the history of technical development and a unique view of the architecture of the then industry.

Welcome to the place where time has stopped and where industrial power has merged with human ingenuity. You are standing right in front of Pacold's limestone, a unique witness to the times when modern Prague was built and technology began to change the face of the world. At first glance, this complex may seem like a quiet, immobile part of the Great Chuchle landscape to you, but believe me, under this layer of peace there is a story of genius, fire, stone and incredible progress. Look around you and try to imagine the noise, dust and constant movement that existed here decades ago. Now that you're here, in peace, we can dive together into the history of this place.

Let's go back to when everything started to be built here. More than a century ago, exactly in the year of a thousand eight hundred and eighty, a construction was completed to change the way in which one of humanity's basic building materials - limestone - was worked. Professor Jiří Pacold was the main architect and brains of this entire enterprise. He was not just an ordinary builder, he was a man with a vision who could find solutions in mathematical accuracy and technical logic for problems that the industry at the time dealt with very difficult. Pacold's idea wasn't just about the buildings themselves, it was about the whole process. His patent for limestone processing was completely revolutionary at the time.

Now pay attention to what's right in front of you. Notice these massive, dominant forms. What you see is not just ordinary buildings, but two connected double furnaces. Notice their arrangement and the strange geometry. This construction is designed as one integrated system. Look at those tall, cylindrical shafts that protrude to the sky. These are key parts of the machine. And then look up at those two chimneys. Their presence here is not random, each part of this object had its exact purpose within the entire technological process. This whole architecture was directly dictated by the need to process the material effectively.

This is where we come to the heart of Professor Pacoldo's success. Note that its system enabled the efficient processing of unsorted limestone. Before that, people had to sort the material very hard to make the furnaces work properly. Pacold, however, came up with a method that allowed to work with the stone as it came, without the need for lengthy and expensive prework. That was a huge advantage that made this limestone the top industrial hub of its time. This technical genius is seen in every connection of these furnaces and in every profile of those shafts.

But the history of this place does not know only one beginning and one end. Although construction was completed in the 1980s, life in the complex continued in various waves. After a long time, in the year one thousand nine hundred thirty-five, the fire of production was rekindled. This renewal was carried out by a trader named Šuran, who at the time saw enormous potential in the renewal of this operation. This era was a period of great changes and dynamics in which also important people of the time, such as Tomáš Šenberg or Martin Frič, were part of the wider cultural and social stream of Prague. Although their names are not directly associated with every stone of this limestone, their existence in memory as figures of that time underlines the meaning of the era from which this object originated.

But everything wasn't supposed to last forever. In the year one thousand nine hundred thirty-eight the operation of the premises was definitively terminated. Since then, there has been no more limestone here, but instead of smoke from chimneys, there is silence. Yet this place has not been forgotten. Thanks to its uniqueness and technical value, this place was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic in the year one thousand nine hundred sixty-six. This is proof that although production is no longer in progress, the value of this place for our history and for our understanding of technical progress is immense.

Maybe now you're being told, what is the most peculiar thing in this place? It is precisely the invisible force that remains in these shading shapes. It's the ability of one person, Professor Pacoldo, to take a raw, unsorted stone and use science and technology to turn it into something useful for the whole city. This limestone is not just a pile of stone and bricks, it's a materialized idea that could defeat inefficiency. It is a symbol of the time when science began to manifest itself in massive, functional structures that are still astonishing by their resilience and logic.

Now I beg you, don't just listen to my words, but let your own eyes guide you. Look at the shapes from different angles, try to perceive the atmosphere of this place, where the industrial past connects to the calm of the present. Feel the monumental nature of the double kilns and the elegance that the industrial shafts possess. Every detail you see here was designed with the idea of performance and efficiency.

Thank you for spending this moment with me and for being interested in this piece of our history. I hope that this view of Pacoldo's limestone has helped you better understand what happened here and why this place is so important. Continue to explore the surroundings now, see the beauty of this part of Prague and enjoy the rest of your day. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is the spring or autumn season, when the light is softer and the colors in the surroundings better complement the industrial appearance of the buildings. The view of high chimneys and shafts in the morning or evening light is very impressive.

The location can be reached by car or through public transport; Please check the current connection in the Internet search engine.

For comfortable movement we recommend to wear fixed shoes because the terrain can be uneven. For families with children, walking around these old buildings represents an interesting possibility of observing the history of industry.

If you take pictures, you will get the best results in low sun, which will highlight the texture of the walls and shape of the cylindrical shaft. A good place for pictures are views of the entire double kiln.

There is a nearby quarry under Homolka and also a radial cement factory that can be used as a supplement to the search of this place.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the surrounding area wakes up and the fresh greenery in the valley is very fresh. The light is finer at this time, which beautifully highlights the details of the old stone. I recommend wearing layered clothes because morning temperatures can still be low, and firm shoes that can handle wet soil.

In the summer months there is rich vegetation and the air in the hills can be hot. The sun shines the strongest, so it is advisable to have enough water and headgear with you. The best time to walk is early morning or just before sunset when the shadow and temperatures are more pleasant.

Autumn brings colour changes to the area where the leaves turn the slopes into golden and orange. Morning fog near the river creates a mysterious atmosphere around historical buildings. It is advisable to have a waterproof jacket and shoes with good grip due to slippery surface from falling leaves.

Winter makes the place drier and very calmly, with bare trees and perhaps the impact of frost. The day is short and light weak, which gives the memory a melancholy look. The necessity is warm winter gear and boots with fixed soles to prevent slipping on a frozen or snowy path.
