Palác Archa, formerly known as Legiobanka, is an architectural monument in Prague 1 at Na Poříčí 1046 / 24 and 1047 / 26. The building is a remarkable unique design in the style of rondocubism, designed by Josef Gočár in 1921-1923. Its importance lies not only in architectural value, but also in history and current use as cultural centres.

The foundation of the palace is closely linked to the period between the First and Second World War, when Czechoslovakia sought to build modern architecture and cultural identity. The Na Poříčí 24 building was designed by Josef Gočár in the style of rondocubism, which represented the synthesis of cubist elements with circular forms. The construction took place in 1921- 1923 and the building became the seat of the Czechoslovak Legion Bank. The decoration was attended by renowned artists such as Jan Štursa and Otto Gutfreund, which contributed to the unique artistic character of the construction.

In 1922 Legiobanka purchased the neighbouring building Na Poříčí 26, where he previously housed the Brewery U Rozvařilů. The building was reconstructed in 1937- 1938 according to the design of František Mark and connected with the original structure. The second part, known as the Golden Clash, hosted, for example, the Theatre D34 E. F. Burian. In 1990 both buildings were purchased by the Czechoslovak Commercial Bank, which subsequently reconstructed them.

The architecture of the palace has passed through several phases. The first part was designed in 1921-1923 by Josef Gočár in the style of rondocubism, while the second part, from 1937-1938, was the modern design of František Mark. In the years 1991- 1994 a extensive reconstruction of the complex took place, including the modernisation of technical equipment. The aim was to improve the interior quality and connect both buildings more effectively.

The ownership of the palace has changed several times over the years. From 1921 to 1955, the Bank of Czechoslovak Legions was based here, then the building went into the hands of the Czechoslovak Commercial Bank, which reconstructed and modernized it. Today the premises are hosted by a number of offices, shops and cultural institutions.

Key events include completion of the building Na Poříčí 24 in 1923 and construction of the building Na Poříčí 26 according to the design by František Mark in 1938. The Arch Theatre is located in the basement of the complex, one of the most modern theatre halls in Prague, according to which it was named the whole complex.

Today Palác Archa is more than just an architectural monument. It hosts various offices and establishments such as the Black Madonna Café, Starbucks and Portovo Italian Restaurant. The area also serves for festivals such as DessigSUPERMARKET. Since September 2024, the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Modes (ÚSTR) has been based here, which underlines the importance of the building as a cultural and historical centre.

Palác Archa is now open to the public. Visitors here can appreciate the architectural beauty of the building, but also visit cultural events and businesses. History and current importance make this place an interesting destination for anyone interested in architecture, history or culture.

Palác Archa is an example of how modern design and historical value can exist together. The importance as cultural centres and architectural heritage makes it a monument not only for Prague but also for the whole Republic. Visiting the palace offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the rich history and contemporary cultural life of the city.

Welcome to the site with rich history and architectural charm - you are standing in front of the Palace of the Ark, one of the most famous monuments in Prague. This impressive object, which boasts unique design and rich history, will fascinate you from the very first sight. Take a look up at his elegant facade, where he makes the rondocubism and modernist elements sweet to harmony.

Let's dive into the creation of this architectural work. In 1921-1923, Josef Gočár designed this palace in the style of rondocubism, which was a very modern approach to building design. The palace originally served as the seat of the Legiobank, which gave him his first name. In 1922 there was a significant expansion when the neighbouring building Na Poříčí 26 was purchased and then connected with the original structure according to the design by František Mark between 1937- 1938. This process not only highlighted the architectural capabilities of both builders, but also added another layer to the history of this place.

Now pay attention to the details of the palace. Its facade is full of living lines and geometric forms, which are characteristic features of rondocubism. Notice how these elements intersect with modernist details, creating a unique atmosphere and an impression of dynamics. This combination allows the building to become a visual symbol of 20th century innovation.

Key figures that contributed to the creation of this place include not only the architects Josef Gočár and Franz Mark, but also artists such as Jan Štursa and Otto Gutfreund. Their cooperation on the decoration of the palace added another layer to its historical and aesthetic importance.

The interesting thing is that originally on the site of the Na Poříčí 26 building was the brewery U Rozvařilů. This fact adds another layer of history and reminds us of a time when this place served completely different purposes.

In 1991-1994 the palace was subjected to modernization of technical equipment and reconstruction of interiors, which ensured its preservation for future generations. And in 2024, the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regime moves into the premises, which adds another significant historical dimension.

If we look at the overall complex, we find that its name was inspired by the Arc Theatre, which is nearby. This relationship adds another layer to the cultural and historical importance of the palace.

Now that you have seen this fascinating memory, we will invite you to explore Prague again. Every alley can hide new stories and beautiful wonders of architecture. Whether you choose another historical object or immerse yourself in the modern life of the city, Prague will offer you unexplored happiness at every step. Thank you for your visit to Palace Ark and we hope you will be back soon!

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit Palace Ark is early morning or evening when there are fewer people and light turns into beautiful coloring on the facades. This style allows better appreciation of the unique architecture of rondocubism.

When visiting, remember the appropriate suit, because the interior of the palace can be cold. It is also good to have a camera with you to capture unique architecture and quality photos.

For the best photos try entering from the south, where the sun illuminates the facade on the middle of the day. This light highlights the geometric elements and colour palette of the building.

In the vicinity of the Palace of the Ark you can visit other historical monuments such as St. Nicholas church or the National Gallery in Prague. These places can be reached on foot in approximately 30 minutes.
