Památník Jana Žižky z Trocnova Memorial
Památník Jana Žižky z Trocnova is situated on an area of 11.4 hectares in a landscape near the Trocnov settlement in Českobudejovice. It is a unique area that combines the natural environment - forests and meadows - with historical buildings and archaeological remains related to the life of Hussite's warlord Jan Žižka.
The area contains several files. In its centre stands the monument itself with the statue of Jan Žižka. It also contains the foundations of Žižek's backyard - the farmhouse from which the Hussite Governor supposedly came - and Mikše's court. Zizkov's memorial - a commemorative stone in the place of the so-called Žizkov oak, where he was born according to the local reputation of the warlord. Part of the complex is a museum, which works as a branch of the South Bohemia Museum in České Budějovice.
The memorial itself was designed by Professor Josef Malejovský and built between 1958 and 1969. The construction has a characteristic shape of a chamber four-sided needle, on top of which is a statue of Jan Žižka in life size, oriented towards the southeast. It was made of Liberec granite, which is resistant.
The museum building has an interesting origin. It originated from the sailing court of the Borovan monastery, which itself originated between 1678 and 1679 probably from the remains of the walls of the original Trovnov courts. The museum stores historical objects found during archaeological surveys of these courts and offers a view of the continuity of life in place from the Middle Ages to the early modern era. In the summer of 2011, the museum underwent a major reconstruction and today it is possible to find a period charter, models of Žizkov's home house and items from the 14th to 17th century.
The area has been protected since 1978 as a national cultural monument. During the Communist regime, he served as a favourite place for school trips and social celebrations. However, after 1989, traffic gradually declined. Since 2011 it has been managed by Jihočeský kraj in cooperation with the South Bohemia Museum. The new element of the complex is Archeoskanzen Trocnov, which has been established since 2020 and was completed in 2024. This is a model of the highest medieval village that brings visitors closer to the way of life in Hussite times.

Not far from the village of Trocnov in the Českobudějovice area, there spreads a site covering 11.4 hectares dedicated to the Hussite military commander Jan Žižka. It consists of forests and meadows, a memorial with a statue of Jan Žižka, Mikšův Dvorec, a museum, and also Žižka's manor. From it, the foundations of the estate have been preserved, which the commander allegedly came from. Part of the site is also Žižka's monument, a memorial stone at the place of the original Žižka oak tree. According to legend, the military commander was born right there. Since 1978, the site has been protected as a national cultural monument.
The memorial itself was designed by Professor Josef Malejovský and was built between 1958 and 1969. It takes the form of a truncated four-sided pyramid made of granite from Liberec. On its peak stands a statue of Jan Žižka in larger-than-life size, facing southeast.
The museum building was created from a manorial farmyard that belonged to the Borovany monastery. The farmyard was built in 1678 and 1679, apparently from the remains of masonry from the Trocnov manor houses. The museum has been functioning almost continuously since the seventies of the twentieth century. From June to August 2011, it underwent a complete reconstruction. It preserves objects found during the archaeological survey of the manors. Period documents, models of Žižka's birthplace, and objects from the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries are displayed here.
The fate of the site changed significantly in recent decades. During the communist regime, various anniversaries were often celebrated here and the place was a frequent destination for school excursions. After 1989, visitor numbers dropped. Since 2004, the Office for Representing the State in Property Matters has been trying to hand over the site to the care of another state body. In 2008, the Ministry of Culture approved the possibility of transferring it to a non-state entity. However, due to lack of profitability, neither the town of Borovany nor the National Heritage Institute showed any interest. Annual costs reached 400 thousand crowns, while revenues amounted to tens of thousands. The site was finally taken over by the South Bohemian Region in 2011 and entrusted to the administration of the South Bohemian Museum in České Budějovice. It has been functioning as its branch ever since.
Since 2020, a completely new Archeoscanzen Trocnov has been created in the site, a model of a high medieval village. It was completed in 2024.

How did it look here? Who lived here? What happened here? Many years ago, there was a massive oak tree in these woods, under which the Hussites gathered and planned their attacks against the enemy. Among them was Jan Zizka, who owned the yard. This yard is now known as Miksha's yard.

Seasonal recommendations
Spring: In the spring, the Trocnova surroundings awaken to life and the fresh green creates a fresh set for sightseeing. Light is soft in this period, which will be appreciated especially by lovers of landscape sensing. We recommend taking layered clothes because morning cold can be accompanied by sudden rain. Visiting the place in the morning is ideal because the traffic is still low and there is a calm, clean air.
Summer: Summer months bring the most sunny days when the monument in full light highlights its history. Nature is in full bloom and the surrounding landscape offers a rich variety of colors. Due to increased interest in the main summer season we recommend arriving as early as possible in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds. Don't forget the sun cap, plenty of fluids and light, breathable clothes.
Autumn: Autumn season offers a melancholy atmosphere where the landscape is colored in golden and brown shades. The morning mists in the valley add a mystery to the monument and highlight its historical significance. It is advisable to have a waterproof jacket and firmer shoes ready because the weather is usually variable and wet. The best time to visit is soon after sunrise when the light is most interesting.
Winter: In winter, the monument in the landscape is very strenuous and dignified, especially if everything is covered with snow or frost. The presence of bare branches of trees allows a better view of the monument itself and surrounding terrain. Due to the shorter time of the day and lower temperature it is necessary to choose very warm and windy clothes.
