The Pankrác Metro Station, located in Prague at the Nuslí cadastre, is a remarkable monument to the current architecture and infrastructure history of the city. Opened on May 9, 1974 as part of the first parts of Prague Metro, it is famous for its unique subsurface vestibule and elegant marble tile. It is located in the location Pankrác plaza on the streets of Star and Na Pankráci, which makes it a key part of the Prague transport system.

Pankrác was built during the era of normalisation in Czechoslovakia, a period of political and economic stabilisation after the events of 1968. This time saw the development of infrastructure in Prague, including the expansion of metro, which was a key step in improving urban transport and connecting various parts of the capital. The construction of the station took place between 1967 and 1974, using advanced construction techniques such as a negative arm and sprayed concrete. The original plans were disrupted by the collapse of part of the west wall in 1971, but they completed the construction in the following year.

Architecturally, the station is deep and based in a pit of 17 meters deep. The station itself is located at a depth of 14 metres, with a total length of 232 metres, of which approximately 100 metres are platforms. The tiles are marble slabs that provide an elegant atmosphere. The station has a single output with a subsurface vestibule connected by escalators, which adds to its unique design.

The station Pankrác has been managed by the Prague transport company since its opening. In 2008 the station lobby was connected to the business center of the Arcade Pankrác, which improved accessibility and functionality for passengers. In connection with the construction of line D, the station underwent a total reconstruction in 2025 during which it was closed to passengers from 6 January to 19 December.

The station is to become a transfer hub after completion of the planned line D, which will increase its strategic importance on the Prague metro. The geological survey for this line began on 19 June 2019 and the construction began on 21 April 2022. The plans for the future include the possibility of connecting with other lines, which would make Pankrác the first place in Prague where three-metre lines are crossed.

Today the station Pankrác is not only an important transport hub, but also a monument to architectural and historical importance. Its unique design and rich history make it interesting to visit not only travelers but also lovers of urban architecture and history. Pankrác is an important step in the development of Prague's infrastructure and remains a key part of the city, which serves as a link for millions of people every day.

Welcome to our sound guide. You are standing just outside the entrance to the station Pankrác, located in Prague on the Nuslí cadastral, right under the street Na Pankráci in a location everyone knows as Pankrác Plain. You took off the city for a while and put on headphones to better understand the history of where you are. Look around you at the bustle of this busy neighborhood and try to imagine that under this pavement there is an important transport hub that has been serving people for decades.

Let's move on in time to the period of origin and historical context of this building. The construction of the station Pankrác took place between the years one thousand nine hundred sixty-seven and one thousand nine hundred seventy-four. This magnificent project was completed on the ninth of May in the year one thousand nine hundred seventy-four, when the station was ceremonially opened as part of the first ever parts of Prague's underground groove system. For the first time, people were able to take advantage of this new journey underground, which completely transformed the way the inhabitants move around the capital.

Now pay attention to the very form of the construction, even though you are standing on the surface and looking at the entrance space. Architecturally, this is a so-called deep station, which means it was founded in a deep construction pit with a depth of 17 metres. Inside the underground, there is a spacious platform and a lobby. This structure was designed to handle the enormous burden of passengers passing through here every day. Over the years, the appearance and surroundings of the station have changed. For example, in the year twenty-eight, there was an important building connection between the original vestibule and the newly created business centre, making the space even more open to the public and connecting transport with shopping life.

When we look at the key stories associated with this place, we have to go back to a time when workers and engineers were struggling with a difficult construction. The original construction plans were unexpectedly disrupted in the year one thousand nine hundred seventy-one. At that time there was a dramatic event when a part of the west wall suddenly collapsed during the ongoing construction work. This crash was a huge test for the builders and endangered the schedule of the whole event, yet the situation was managed and the work successfully completed for the festive opening in the year one thousand nine hundred seventy-four.

The interesting thing is that the development of this place certainly does not end in the past. The station will pass through and will undergo further changes. A significant milestone is the year of two thousand twenty-five, when a complete reconstruction of the station was planned. This large construction event is triggered by the necessity of regular development, which means that the station must keep up with modern times and the expanding network of the Prague underground runway so that it can continue to reliably serve other generations of passengers.

We hope you are interested in this brief view of the history and present-day station Pankrác. When you enter, remember the drama with the wall down and those who built this deep station decades ago. Thank you for your attention, we wish you a wonderful experience in the further discovery of Prague and see you at the next stops of our guide.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit this deep underground building is during the weekend morning when the underground traffic is quieter and passengers have more time to look at architectural details from 1974.

For transport use the underground track, whose station is located directly on the Nusla cadastral. Check the current connection in the link search, as specific line numbers are not listed.

Bring comfortable shoes for walking on a solid surface and a camera with good sensitivity to reduced underground light.

For photography we recommend to capture the long platform and entrance vestibule, where the characteristic design of the early Prague underground track is excellent.

Since there are no other recommended sites in the area, you should focus solely on the tour of the underground area itself and its immediate surroundings.

2. Central Park Area Type: Public park in immediate vicinity Why is it worth visiting: It serves as a quiet green oasis surrounded by a building. The place is ideal for a short walk and rest right in the heart of the area.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring wakes up this Prague district after a long cold and surrounding parks slowly turn green, while the low March or April sun pleasantly irradiates old brick walls and concrete structures from above the valley. Since the entire area is in regular maintenance, you may encounter construction machines and temporary closed passages on the route, which gives the site a somewhat crude industrial atmosphere. Take the spring tour in the morning, when the air is the cleanest and tourists still do not fill the surrounding pavement. Put on solid shoes suitable for mud and a waterproof jacket, because spring weather can be very variable and cold wind blowing from the Nusel valley can be an unpleasant surprise.

Summer brings hot days and bright noon lights to these places, which sharply irradiates monumental buildings and creates long shadows in vast spaces between old buildings and modern high-rise buildings. Due to ongoing construction work and repairs, dust and shade are missing in some places, so it is best to visit early morning hours immediately after dawn or late evening, when the sun falls towards the horizon and the air temperature drops slightly. You can avoid crowds easily because ordinary visitors are going to the city centre. Take with you light breathable clothes, headgear as protection against sharp rays and plenty of drinking water in the bottle, as you will not find many refreshments around the construction site.

Autumn covers Nusle and adjacent heights in mysterious fog and morning haze, with the trees in the parks changing the colour of leaves to yellow orange tones, creating a melancholic background for the photography of industrial and historical architecture. Maintenance work continues during this period, which means that you need to be more careful on the slippery surface covered with drooling leaves and mud. The ideal time for arrival is around noon, when the fog usually dissolves and the weak autumn sun lights up the whole area for a while. Put on several layers of warm clothes, wool hat and high-quality non-slip shoes, because the cold wind blowing from the sides can quickly freeze.

Winter turns this place into a quiet and sometimes harsh scenery, where the snow cover covers traces of construction activity and the morning change covers metal structures and old masonry. The days are very short, so the shadow comes already in the afternoon and artificial street lighting gives the whole area a specific, almost film atmosphere. In this period, you will meet only the absolute minimum of people, which guarantees complete peace of mind, but you must expect limited movement due to snow and ice on unprepared roads. Don't forget to wear a warm winter coat, warm gloves, scarf and high shoes with anti-slip soles, so that you can safely pass through all the icy sections around.
