Pohřební kaple Karla Gölsdorfa is a neo-gothic sacral building of a monetary character from the beginning of the 20th century, which serves as a family tomb in a forest environment near the village Stráž nad Ohří. It is an important monument that shows the connection of the personal story of the Gölsdorf family with architecture and was reconstructed after a period of considerable devastation.

The chapel was built in the early 20th century as a private tomb according to the design of an unknown architect. The main reason for its creation and location outside the cemetery was the religion of the Gölsdorf husbands: Karl Gölsdorf was a Lutheran while his wife was a Catholic. After the death of Karl Gölsdorf in 1907, when the construction was not yet completed, he was temporarily buried in a cemetery in the Guard of Fire. His remains were transferred to the chapel in 1912 and his wife buried here the following year.

The construction, which has a rectangular plan with dimensions 3560 × 3030 mm, is built from rough grain sandstone blocks and inspired by the ultimate Gothic. The dominant facade of approx. 5160 mm is decorated with an entrance portal, which is led by two stone steps with decorative railing. The portal closes the iron grate and ends with a tympanone with three leaves. Above it are two broken windows with stone lining, reliefs of roses symbolizing Christ or Virgin Mary, and above the ledge is placed the Latin cross with clover's end. The inscription Per asper ad astra (Despite the obstacles to the stars) embellishes a shield that symbolizes overcoming life's difficulties. The original gargoyles in the shape of winged lions were replaced by replicas and the saddle roof with sheet metal cover ended with a renewed fence with fleur-de-lys motif.

The interior of the chapel is encapsulated by a vaulted arch with lunettes, supplemented by stucco ribs growing from a profiled ledge. The walls are mostly unframed and supplemented with stone plinth. On the wall there is a shallow broken niche with three-leaf decorative design. The original statue, probably the Virgin Mary, was destroyed and preserved only by a torso of a female figure without a head. Triangular motifs with circular field containing the IHS christogram are placed between the windows. In the middle of the floor is the entrance to the crypt, which extends under the entire object.

After the Second World War and especially after the founding of the Military Departure of Hradiště in 1953, the chapel was abandoned, which led to its disintegration. During the second half of the century, the interior and crypt were destroyed by vandals; valuables have been looted and plastic decoration damaged. The statue from the interior was thrown into the crypt, the coffins were damaged and the remains were scattered. In 2013 the chapel was entered on the state list of cultural monuments and after the reduction of the territory of the Military Departure in 2016 it transferred to the property of the village Stráž nad Ohří.

Today the chapel is in good condition after extensive reconstruction from 2021. The facade, architectural details and damaged elements were reconstructed during the reconstruction. The crypt was placed in a state close to its original form and closed to the public in order to preserve its piety. The chapel is located in a forest environment near the communication connecting the municipality of Stráž nad Ohří with the bottling mineral waters of the Crown and represents a valuable document of historical architecture which is interesting for its detailed stonework and tragic history.

Welcome to the unique memory of history and architecture - the funeral chapel of Karl Gölsdorf. You are standing here in a quiet, forest area near the Guard of Ohří, where this neo-gothic sacral building of a funeral character is proudly turned off by its rough-grained sandstone blocks. The original inspiration of the ultimate goth is evident in a noble design that harmoniously intersects with nature.

Let's look at the history of this place. The chapel was built in the early 20th century as a private tomb for the Gölsdorf family who had various religious beliefs - Karl Gölsdorf was a Lutheran and his wife Catholic. In 1912, the remains of Karl Gölsdorf were transferred to the chapel, which was an important moment for the family. A year later, in 1913, the wife of Karl Gölsdorf was buried here. This chapel not only served as a resting place, but also symbolized unity and respect for different beliefs.

Now look up at the rectangular floor plan of the building. Note the elegant lines and details that resemble Gothic architecture. Although particular architects are not known, their work stands as a witness to the championships and empathy of family traditions.

The key person associated with this chapel is, of course, Karl Gölsdorf. His life story and importance to his family are projected into every stone in this tomb. In 2013, the chapel was listed on the state list of cultural monuments, which highlights its historical and cultural value.

It is interesting that after the period of neglect and vandalism, the chapel was redesigned in 2021. This process not only saved the memory from complete extinction, but also revived its historical beauty for future generations.

After this short presentation, we recommend that you take the time to explore the surrounding environment and other attractions of this place. We hope your visiting day was full of discoveries and inspiration. With God on your next journey!

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring and autumn, when the forest environment around the mineral bottling plant is the most beautiful and the weather is usually mild. In summer it may be hot in the forest, while in winter access to the building may be restricted by snow or slippery path. We recommend avoiding top tourism if the monument is publicly accessible and choosing a calmer morning or afternoon hours.

Access to Karl Gölsdorf's funeral chapel is the most practical personal car. Due to the position in the forest environment near the village Stráž nad Ohří the place is probably not served directly by regular public transport. If you plan to travel by public transport, check the current connection to the Guard over Ohří and count on a short walk along the forest road.

Remember to wear solid shoes with a good heel that can handle rough terrain and any mud. We recommend having drinking water, light snacks and light umbrella or waterproof jacket according to the season, because the forest's microclimate may be wet. If the chapel is closed, you can enjoy a nature walk and observe the details of the exterior of the neo-gothic building.

For photography is ideal morning light that penetrates between trees and creates dramatic shadows on the stone facade of the chapel. You get the best footage from a slight distance where you capture the overall context of the building in the forest environment. Take with you a tripod for long exposure at dusk, when the object can be illuminated or contrasted with a dark forest. Observe the details of the neo-gothic window fillings and sculptures that are typical of the monetary architecture of this period.

In the immediate surroundings, in the short walk distance, there is a bottling plant of mineral water Crown. It's a great opportunity to taste local mineral water and get a souvenir. For families with children, this location is suitable as a short walk into nature where children can observe forest fauna and flora. If the chapel is closed, you can explain to children the history of the Gölsdorf family and the importance of such family tombs in the history of the region, which may be an interesting educational moment.

Seasonal recommendations

The spring season offers visitors a rare combination of fresh air and awakening vegetation around the chapel. Soft spring light beautifully highlights the details of the construction and creates a fresh mood. It is ideal to visit the place in the morning when nature is the most lively. Prepare several layers of clothing for yourself because spring weather is usually variable and morning temperatures may still be low.

In the summer months the chapel is surrounded by dense greenery and intense sunlight that highlight its architecture. Due to longer days and warmer weather, the atmosphere is very lively. In the main summer season, it is recommended to arrive as early as possible in the morning to avoid the biggest rush of people and heat. Dress lightly and comfortably to make your summer heat inspection feel pleasant.

Autumn brings melancholy beauty to the site, especially thanks to golden shades of leaves and morning fog, which deliver the chapel mysterious. The light at sunset is particularly deep and golden in this period. Choose a visit in the afternoon for the best experience. It is advisable to have a warmer jacket with you, because in autumn days there may already be considerable cooling and moisture.

Zimą acts as a chapel in silence and calm, which underlines its spiritual character. Freezing air and possible snow create a rough but very noble appearance of the monument. In advent time and during freezing days there are fewer people, which ensures maximum peace. Due to shorter daily time and cold we recommend a visit in clear noon hours and don't forget to wear very warm clothes and high-quality shoes.
