The monument to international solidarity against the fascist coalition in Český Těšín is a ten-metre concrete obelisk from 1979. It is located at the site of the former Stalag VIII B POW camp and commemorates the suffering of prisoners of war. It is registered as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The monument was founded in late socialism on the initiative of the Union of anti-fascist fighters in Český Těšín. Its purpose is a reminder of the fight against fascism and international solidarity, particularly in connection with the fate of the people of Camp Stalag VIII B. It was officially revealed on September 9, 1979.

Architecturally, it's a prism pillar made of postcard concrete. In the lower part there are bronze plates with reliefs which represent the suffering of prisoners. The whole monument stands in a paved area. The proposal was proposed by the Macedonian Greek Ing. arch. Koc Krstovský and the sculptor was the academic Stephen Mikula.

The memorial is registered in the Central Record of War Graves, administered by the Ministry of Defence.

In 2011, the building was renovated under the leadership of Michal Mikula, son of the original sculptor. On 29 April 2011, seven commemorative records were unveiled to families who had fallen during 1939-1945. Two boards bear the names of Czechoslovak soldiers and two Polish soldiers, three dedicated to officers of the Polish army murdered by NKVD in Katyn.

Today, the memorial serves as a place of memory of the tragedy of World War II and specific events associated with the place in Kontešinka. It is an important point for anyone who is interested in the history of war camps and international fates of soldiers.

Visiting this place allows a deeper understanding of the tragic history of the region and the fate of people from different nations. It is a space for reflection on the value of peace and international solidarity.

Welcome to Český Týšín, a place where history meets the silence of the present and where every stone tells its own, often painful story. Stop for a moment, take a breath and look ahead. You are now facing a monument, which, in its sober form and in its considerable size, forces to stop and to think deeply. It is a tall, gray pillar that rises to heaven and creates an atmosphere of respect and memories in space around it. The first impression may be cold because of the material used, but it is in this brilliance that the power of this place lies. It is a silent witness to the events that took place in this space decades ago, and it is also a symbol of the hope and joint effort of people who wanted to reverse the course of history.

To understand why this monument stands here, we need to go back in time. This place is not randomly chosen. Right here, where you are now standing, was a former prisoner camp named Stalag VIII B. Imagine this place in times of war, imagine thousands of men from different corners of Europe who were torn from their homes, their families, and their dreams. There were people who fought for freedom and people who were just victims of a ruthless system. That is why this monument to international solidarity was built by the anti-fascist coalition. Its creation was the result of an initiative by the Union of anti-fascist fighters who wanted the suffering of prisoners not to be forgotten and that future generations would know the value of freedom and direction. The memorial was officially revealed on September 9th of the year a thousand nine hundred seventy-nine. At that time, it was a strong expression of recognition to all those who opposed dictatorship and hatred, regardless of their nationality or origin.

Now please pay attention to the architecture itself and what you see right in front of you. Look up. There's a three-foot prism pillar in front of you. It is made of so-called postcard concrete, which means that the surface is not covered by any plaster or paint. This raw material is not random. In this context, concrete symbolizes the hardness, resilience, but also the cold and harshness of the conditions that prisoners had to face in the camp. The whole building is recognised today as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, which underlines its importance not only to the local population but to the whole state.

However, when you start your view below, into the bottom third of the height of the pillar, you will see details that are much more emotional. Notice the bronze plates. There are reliefs on them, that is, performing plastic images that represent the suffering of prisoners. If you come near them, you'll see pain, fatigue, and despair in those faces and gestures, but maybe even a trace of willpower. These boards are the heart of the monument because it returns the monument to the human face. Architect Ing. arch. Koc Krstovský and akademický sochař Štěpán Mikula together created a work that combines modern, up to strict architecture with classical sculpture expression of emotion. It's the contrast between a stationary, massive concrete and a detailed, painful expression in bronze.

When we think about people who were connected to this place, we don't just have to look in history textbooks. Although there are no specific famous personalities listed here, the main heroes of this place are thousands of nameless men. Imagine the thousands of stories that intersect here. There were people from different countries who spoke different languages, but there was one common experience: the loss of freedom and the desire to return home. It is in this common suffering that the international solidarity that is mentioned in the name of the monument has emerged. The people who met at the camp supported each other, shared the last pieces of bread and encouraged themselves to survive even the darkest days. This monument is therefore a celebration of humanity, which can overcome national borders and language barriers in the name of survival and mutual assistance.

Now I want to impress you with one interesting thing that shows that the history of this place is still breathing and is still revealing its secret to us. Even though the monument was built in the year one thousand nine hundred seventy-nine, his story did not stop. In the year two thousand eleven the entire building underwent a thorough reconstruction. Something unexpected happened during these repairs. Seven commemorative records were uncovered that were previously hidden or forgotten. These records are dedicated to the native who have been linked to this tragic fate. It is a fascinating moment when the general symbol of solidarity monument becomes a much more personal place. Suddenly, they're not just anonymous prisoners from all over the world, but specific people who came from this region, from these streets and homes. This reminds us that great history consists not only of data and political decisions, but above all of the fates of specific people whose names may sometimes be lost in oblivion for years to be found again.

Stop for a moment in complete silence. Feel the atmosphere of this place. Look again at the tall concrete column and then the bronze faces at his base. It's a powerful contrast between the power that wanted to break people and the human soul that tried to endure. This monument in Český Těšín is not only a reminder of war, but mainly a warning for the future and a call for us to respect peace and mutual respect.

Thank you for accompanying me to this monument. I hope that this short journey in time has helped you better understand the meaning of this place and that you will leave with a feeling of deeper perception of history that has taken place here, under your feet. Now, let's invite you to further explore the area. Walk slowly around the monument, you may notice other details in the landscape that tell you their story. We wish you a pleasant rest of the day and peaceful contemplation of what you saw today. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit this monument is the spring or autumn period, when the weather is mild and the surrounding greenery provide a calm atmosphere for reflection. As it is an outdoor monument without shelter, avoid visiting in extreme heat or heavy rain. We recommend to come in the morning when there is less interference and light is suitable for viewing sculptures.

The monument is located in Český Těšín, which is a city well accessible by car and public transport. When travelling by public transport, check the current connections and departure times in the search engine in advance, as the lines can change.

Take comfortable shoes with you for a comfortable tour, as you move on the outdoor terrain. We also recommend taking drinking water and a light snack if you plan a longer stay in the area. Since this is a historic place of serious importance, it is advisable to read in advance the short history of Camp Stalag VIII B to better understand the context of the monument.

For photography is the best light in the morning or late afternoon when the sun shines at an angle and creates interesting shadows on sculptures. Look for angles that capture an overall view of the monument in the context of the surrounding landscape. If possible, try to photograph details of the inscriptions and reliefs that carry historical messages. Make sure your photo shoot is respectful and does not disturb other visitors.

Since there are no specific places in the area that are 30 minutes away, we recommend focusing on the monument itself and its immediate surroundings. If you have time, you can walk around the city Český Těšín, which offers other historical and cultural monuments. It is important for families with children to explain to children the importance of the monument in simple words to understand that it is a place that resembles the struggle for freedom and solidarity.
