Český Těšín is a town in the Karviná District on the border with Poland, in historical Cieszyn Silesia. It lies on the left bank of the Olše River, opposite Polish Cieszyn, with which it formed a single town until 1920. It became a separate town after Těšín was divided in 1920: the historic core with Castle Hill remained on the Polish side, while the left-bank suburb with the railway station went to Czechoslovakia. In the 1920s and 1930s, the suburb quickly grew into a town. Buildings from this period include the central cemetery complex, the Lutheran church Na Nivách and the grammar school building. On 1 January 2025, Český Těšín had 23,075 inhabitants, and the main organisations of the Polish minority in Czechia are based here.
