Ředitelská vila Podolské cementárny in Prague 4-Podolí represents industrial architecture of the end of the 19th century. The building stands in Podolská Street at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. Since 2017 it has been protected as a real cultural monument of the Czech Republic along with the tarasni wall and fencing.

The villa was established before 1897 as part of the Podolské cement plant, which operated in this area between 1871 and 1941. The building comes from a period of intense industrial development in Prague, when it combined functionality with representative elements. Originally, she carried a descriptive number of 48 and probably served as the director's seat until the end of the plant in 1941.

The building is built from bricks on concrete base passports. It's a storey, unglued building with an attic and a significantly-trimmed floor plan. A two-story turret surpasses it in the north front. The villa is architecturally set up in a composted taran wall under the slope. The three-axis main facade is decorated with lizens and lining made of slivenecan marble, other facades are made in plaster. On the main side of the building there is a staircase and a porticus, which ends in the level of the floor with a small balcony. In 1932 a garage was added to the villa.

The property has changed over the years. After the completion of the cement plant operation in 1941 the building was owned by Czechoslovak ceramic plants n. In 1950 it was received by the Central National Committee of the City of Prague. From 1950 to 1951 there was a parent school and later, in the 1990s, the Czech British School. Until 2014, the villa was owned by Prague 4.

The critical moment was 2015, when the company EMBECKO, a.s. requested demolition of the building. This threat has been averted by a timely procedure to declare the villa a cultural monument. It was subsequently officially included in the list of real cultural monuments in March 2017.

Today, the villa stands near the Podolan swimming pool, built on the site of the extinct cement plant. It is a valuable reminder of the industrial history of Prague and an example of period architecture. Visiting this place allows you to look into the era of the boom of the Prague industry.

Welcome to Prague in Podoli. You are standing in front of a building that is a silent but proud witness to the industrial past of this place. In front of you stands the director's villa, which, in its form, stands out from the surroundings and tells the story of the time when, in the rhythm of machines and dust, building material for a growing city was formed here. The first impression of this building is very specific. It is not just an ordinary house, but a representative of so-called industrial architecture that combines functionality with a desire for representativeness. Notice how the building extends in front of you and how its shape looks dynamic.

Let us now look together at how this villa was created and why it is standing here. To understand its meaning, we must return in time to the ninth century. The cement plant has been operating in Podolí since the year one thousand eight hundred seventy. It was a huge business that lasted until the year one thousand nine hundred forty. Just as part of this vast complex, this villa was built. The exact date of its laying is unknown, but we know with certainty that it was completed a year ago eight hundred and ninety-seven. At that time, it was customary that the head of the big business, the director, would have his seat directly in the premises or in close proximity to it. It allowed him to have constant supervision of the operation while serving as a symbol of the company's power and success.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. Take a close look at the building and feel its rugged plan. The architects who designed this villa remained unknown in time, but their work is still visible in detail. If you look at the north facade, your eyes naturally attract a two-story turret. It is a dominant element of the whole house, which gives it a certain castle feel while stressing its importance. Now move your view to the main facade. Notice the marble elements that decorate the facade. The marble was a symbol of luxury and elegance at the time, and its use here clearly indicates that there was a man of high social standing in this house. The whole look of the villa is a combination of industrial context and period luxury.

When we think about the people who lived and worked here, we have to realize that this villa was the center of the race. The director probably lived here until a thousand nine hundred forty one, when the cement plant ceased its activities. So imagine all those years when the windows of the villa looked at the smoky chimneys and heard the noise of machines. At the time, however, the functions of the building changed. In the year one thousand nine hundred thirty-two, a garage was added to the villa, which tells us that by that time modern means of transport had already begun to be stolen into the Director's life.

An interesting break in the history of the villa is the period after World War II. In the year a thousand and nine hundred and fifty buildings were acquired by the Central National Committee of the City of Prague. That's when the director's luxury mansion became a public service space. In the years of a thousand nine hundred fifty to a thousand nine hundred fifty, one of them was based in a kindergarten. It is fascinating to think that in premises where trade agreements and industrial plans were previously dealt with, suddenly the children's laughter and their first contact with education took place. Later there was an international school, which brought another dose of cosmopolitan character to this Podolní corner.

However, there is also one very dramatic issue attached to this villa, which happened at a much more recent time. A few years ago, in the year two thousand fifteen, this piece of history seemed to disappear forever. The villa threatened demolition. Imagine the feeling where such a unique building with marble details and a characteristic turret can only become a pile of rubble. Fortunately, however, the situation has been reversed. The realization of the value of this building led to the fact that in the year two thousand seventeen, the director's villa was officially declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. By doing so, she gained legal protection and certainty that her story would continue for future generations.

When you're standing outside this building today, think of it as a bridge between two worlds. On the one hand it is a monument to hard industrial work, heavy concrete and development of Prague Podoli. On the other hand, it is an example of aesthetics and elegance of the late nineteenth century. It's a place where the ambition of industrialists meets the needs of ordinary people, from kindergarten children to teachers at international school.

Take one last look at the turret and marble details. They are silent witnesses to the transformation of time. From the flowering of the cement plant to the state administration period to today's conservation status. This villa reminds us that beauty can exist in the heart of the industrial zone and that it is important to protect it from oblivion.

Thank you for stopping by this unique house with me. I hope this short trip to history has helped you to better perceive the atmosphere of this place. I will now invite you to further explore the surroundings of Podoli, where you will find other interesting traces of Prague's past. I wish you a pleasant continued journey and many new discoveries. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is late spring or autumn, when the colorful greenery at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains beautifully complements the look of industrial architecture. Transport to Prague - Podolí is possible by car and public connections; verify specific routes in maps. When walking we recommend shoes suitable for the field, as you move near the hills. For the best photos we recommend to come in the morning or late afternoon lights that highlight the details of the villa facade. In the vicinity you can visit the swimming pool in Podolí. Families with children will appreciate a walk in the surrounding nature at the foot of the mountains where you can observe traces of old industry.

Ředitelská vila Podolské cementárny (Memorial House) - The main destination of the trip, where you can admire the appearance and details of the former factory management. 3. Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the surrounding green begins to awaken and the young leaves of the trees gently frame the facade of the villa. Light is soft and fresh in this period, which is ideal for observing the details of architecture from the street. We recommend shoes suitable for wet terrain and visit in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months it dominates the areas of intense sun and hot air, which highlights the colors of the building. The surrounding trees provide a pleasant shade for those who view the building from the outside. It is advisable to choose light, breathable clothes and set off either early in the morning or at dusk to avoid the greatest heat.

Autumn brings golden shades of leaves to Podolí, which create a nostalgic atmosphere around the historic house. The low sun hits the walls at a sharp angle and creates deep shadows, which değiştids the perception of the shapes of the villa. Practical is to carry a lighter jacket or a wind coat and choose days with clear sky.

Zimą operates in a quiet and machine environment where frost and possible snow highlight its outlines. The atmosphere is calm and the building itself acts more monumentally in contrast to the grey sky. For walking around the villa is necessary warm clothes, layering of clothing and fixed footwear with anti-slip sole.
