The former Röslerův statek v Merbolticích in Děčín is a large agricultural estate, the oldest parts of which come from the middle of the 18th century. The area represents a rarely preserved set of folk architecture. Since 2004 it has been registered as a cultural monument and forms part of the village monument zone.

The main residential house no. 141 acquired its present form at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries after reconstruction of the older building. In the Josephine cadastral from the end of the 18th century Gottfrid Storch was registered as owner, in the first half of the 19th century the farmer Josef Lösel appears in the records of a stable cadastral. The Rösler family, first documented in writing in Merboltice in 1713, subsequently took over and managed the estate until the displacement of the German population at the end of World War II.

The memory-protected complex lies on the right side of the Merboltic stream. It includes three residential buildings and economic buildings. Two grafted pedestal houses, no. 141 and 192, dates back to the 18th century. The main house no. 141 has a grafted construction on the ground floor with pedestals and on the floor a vertically formatted pavement with carved posts. The former Exchanger No. 192 maintained the traditional availability of a three-piece substation house including the original furnace, tiled stove and the remains of the black kitchen. The third residential object is the walled villa No. 202 from the period before 1931, which shows the economic rise of the owners. Part of the estate is also a whole-wood barn, already in a stable catalogue from 1843, and a reconstructed wooden shed.

Josef Rösler (1853-1917), founder of the local Voluntary Fire Association and active tourist promoter was an important character of the genus. He financed the construction of the first wooden lookout tower on Strážný vrž, which he named after his wife Maria in 1901. His son Rudolf Rösler later served as a representative of the village and led a fire brigade which had over 140 members in 1925.

Since 2004, when new owners bought the farm, continuous repairs of the protected buildings have been ongoing. There is currently organic farming and an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Rösler family is set up in house No. 202. The neighbourhood association Merboltice, in cooperation with the municipality in 2017, opened Rösler's historical educational trail. The visitors are familiar with the history of the genus, local legends and architecture of the podstávka houses.

The Rösler farm is a valuable document of historical settlement and development of folk architecture in the Czech Central Mountains. Visiting this place offers the opportunity to recognize the authentic form of the rural economy and recall the important activities of local families for the development of the region.

Welcome to Merboltice. You have just stopped in front of a place that carries the incredible power of the past and that holds the soul of this entire region. In front of your eyes is Rösler's estate, an extensive and impressive whole that will immediately welcome you with its peaceful and firm presence. You are standing in front of a set of buildings that are not just ordinary buildings, but are a living witness to how people have worked, lived and built their community in the heart of the Czech Central Fire. Feel this atmosphere, feel this space, which seems to be in complete harmony with the surrounding landscape. It's a place where time has stopped to tell us the story of tradition, a fertile land, and a family that has left its irreplaceable mark.

Let's go back to time together to understand where this whole thing comes from. The history of this place is not short, its roots extend deep into the darkness of the past. In the year one thousand seven hundred thirteen, the first name of the Rösler family appeared in the written records, which became an essential part of this village. Imagine that time when the world was shaped differently, when every building was the result of hard work and deep linkage to the soil. The oldest parts of this vast agricultural ensemble that you can see today come from the mid-eighteenth century. This means that these walls and roofs have been seen by generations of people who have fought here every day for a living and have built a base for their offspring. This farmhouse was never just an ordinary home, it was a pillar of local farming, a center around which the life of the whole estate revolved.

Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you. This complex is a rare and very well preserved example of what we call folk architecture. It's not just a technical term, it's an expression of the wisdom of people who built their works to last centuries. The whole complex is very comprehensive and includes several important objects. You will see here three residential homes that served families and workers, with various economic structures attached to them. Notice how these buildings are deployed to form a functional unit together. While time was changing, the basic layout of the space used for efficient agriculture remained. The historical records, for example in the cadastral, also mention the whole-wood barn, which gives us an idea of how rich and extensive this estate was in the best times of its existence. Every part of this file, every roof and every wall speaks of craftsmanship and the need to create a place that will not only be practical but also solid and lasting.

But in order to understand the true meaning of this place, we need to look at the people who left their tracks. The Rösler estate is not only about buildings, it is about the personalities who lived here and which have influenced not only this estate but also the whole area. Significant figures associated with this place and its history include, for example, Gottfrid Storch or Josef Lösel. But the Rösler family remains the most distinctive name. Let's focus on Josef Rösler. This man was not just the owner of a large estate, he was a man with a great visionary spirit and interest in his surroundings. His influence exceeded the limits of the estate itself. It is he who, in the year one thousand and nine hundred and one, financed the construction of a lookout tower on the Watchtower so that people could see better the beauty of this landscape. His legacy is therefore perceived not only in these local walls, but also in the view of the whole area of the Czech Central Fire. Other names like Rudolf Rösler remind us of the continuity of this genus and its permanent presence in Merboltice for many generations.

But there is also one interesting thing that might interest you, which shows how our perception of history changes. This area has not always been protected as it is today. In the year two thousand and four, there was a major break. This whole extensive file was officially declared a cultural monument and was purchased by new owners who fully realised its value. Since then, this space has become part of the village monument zone, which means it is protected as an untouchable piece of our common heritage. This is important, because thanks to this protection, we can stand here today and admire the authenticity that would otherwise easily disappear in the stream of modern development. And if you want to learn more, in the year two thousand and seventeen, this is where Rösler's historical teaching trail was opened, which can guide you through these history even more.

But now you have no end but rather the beginning of a new journey. This farm is just a gateway to a rich world that has been taking place here for hundreds of years. I suggest you continue your search and be carried away by the atmosphere of this place. See the different parts of the complex, see the link between residential houses and economic buildings and try to imagine the everyday life that took place here from the mid-eighteenth century to today. Every corner of this place has its own story waiting to be discovered. Thank you for choosing to devote time to this memory and for taking this short journey with us. We wish you a nice walk and many other interesting discoveries around Merboltic.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during late spring or early autumn, when the surrounding landscape of Merboltic is the most photogenic and weather wishes for walks. The farmhouse is an example of folk architecture, so we recommend choosing sunny days when the structure of historical buildings stands out. It is ideal for shooting soft light during the morning or shortly before sunset to highlight the details of facades and wooden elements. Due to the nature of the site, wear fixed shoes suitable for field and unpaved roads around the estate. For families with children, the location is suitable as an easy trip destination, where children can observe traditional buildings and enjoy the quiet rural environment.
