Sanatorium O. Schneidera Villa

Ondřej Schneider Sanatorium, situated on the corner of the streets of Ke Karlov and Na Bojíště in Prague 2, is a historical object that is interested in its architectural concept and rich history. This three-storey corner building was built in 1891-1892 according to the design of architects Čeňek Gregor and Karl Stark. Its neoRenaissance style, combined with elements of Central European historism, makes it a unique monument within the New Town. At present there is a clinic of occupational medicine VFN and the building is protected as a real cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The appearance of the sanatorium was linked to the development of Prague as a modern metropolis at the end of the 19th century, when the need for new treatment facilities grew. In 1891-1892, the building was built as a luxury family sanitarium by Dr. Schneider, which reflected the emphasis on health care and wellness at the time. The contrast between the concrete masonry and the plastered elements reflected European building trends, which were then promoted in Czech cities.

The architecture of the sanatorium is characterized by three wings with ten and thirteen axes of facade. A significant part of the facade are cylindrical towers, balconies with segmented faces and a central bay with additional balconies. The interior has preserved a number of original elements, such as stone lining of the entrance vestibule, wooden doorway or Art Nouveau door. There is also a ceramic lounge with original lining from Rako and a fountain from Suchardova, which is an important historical element.

The property has undergone several changes. After his founding he served as a luxury sanitarium of Dr. Schneider and was later transferred to medical purposes for which he is serving today. Key events include the extension of the south wing in 1908-1909 and adaptation under the direction of Josef Blech in 1928-1929, which enriched his architectural character.

In 2013, the reconstruction of ceramic tiles was carried out in cooperation with the academics Vojtěch Paris and Mark Houska, which contributed to maintaining the historical appearance of the building. Although the fountain in the ceramic lounge is not functional today, its original state is an essential element for understanding the history of the sanatorium.

Ondřej Schneider's sanatorium today serves not only as a cultural monument, but also as an active medical facility. The rich past and architectural value make the place an interesting destination for tourists and experts in the history of architecture. The visit offers an opportunity to explore not only the history of medicine, but also artistic and building development at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
