The statue of Saint Florian in Žitětín, the local part of the village Jičíněves in the district of Jičín, is a classical sandstone monument from 1843. The work comes from the renowned sculpture workshop of the family Sucharda from Nové Paka and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic under registration number Ú22827 / 6-1457.

The creation of the statue in the middle of the 19th century falls into the period when classicism was born in Czech countries and romanticism started. The rural landscape was often supplemented by small sacral objects which were intended to protect the municipality from natural elements, especially fires. Saint Florian, the patron saint of firemen and protector of fire, was voted for this purpose very often.

Sandstone sculpture depicts a saint in a traditional iconographic concept. Saint Florian is depicted in Roman soldier's clothing; In his left hand he holds the battalion and the burning house is extinguished. The entire composition is based on a pillar decorated with side voltages. On his front is the relief of St. John Nepomuk, which is a less common combination of the statues of St. Florian. The space around the pillar is defined by sandstone balustrations.

The building stands on the way to the local school near the house No. 5. The monument is kept in the catalogue of the National Monument Institute and is a proof of the artisanal level of the Sucharda family workshop, which in the 19th century worked significantly in Nová Pace.

This statue is a valuable example of small sacral architecture, which completes the historical nature of Žitětin. Visiting this place offers the opportunity to see the quality stonework from the period of classicism in its original rural context.

Welcome to the beautiful village of Žitín. You just stopped in front of one of the most important and oldest symbols of this place. You're standing right in front of the statue of St. Florian. Look at it and feel the calm but strong presence that this sandstone monument brings to the whole area. It is a work that has been standing here for nearly two hundred years and which fits perfectly in the atmosphere of this part of the village Jičíněves. The sandstone from which the statue is carved has a special depth and the ability to capture light and shadow, which gives the whole character a constant life even if it is a stationary stone.

Now let's go back in time together and understand why this statue is even standing here. Imagine the year one thousand eight hundred forty-three. The world around you was completely different then. Villages like Zitetín were filled with wooden buildings and people lived in close relation to nature and the dangers that could come at any time. At that time, the biggest concern for every citizen for their home and their families was the fire. The fire could have destroyed the entire city within hours. That is why this statue was placed in the village as a spiritual protection against fires. People believed that the presence of Saint Florian would bring them safety and peace. This statue wasn't just an ornament, it was the hope of the entire local community.

Now pay attention to whoever created this work. This statue is not the work of an unknown craftsman, but it comes from a very renowned and respected sculpture workshop of the Sucharda family from Nová Paka. In the middle of the nineteenth century, this family was known for its excellent work with stone and its ability to inhale sandstone human form. Thanks to their master hand, this statue is still in such good condition and still fascinates us with its precision. This is proof of the high art standard that was developing in our countries at the time.

Now look at the holy figure himself. Notice how it's shown. Saint Florian does not appear here merely as a spiritual leader, but as a strong and determined Roman soldier. Notice his garment, which refers to his military past and gives him dignity and dignity. In his left hand, he holds a banner that is a symbol of his authority and faith. Now focus on his right hand. It carries out an activity that is most important to the entire composition. See how they're trying to put out a burning house? This movement, this action, is the manifestation of protectionist power. It is a constant reminder that even in the greatest danger there is a force that can bring rescue.

Now look a little lower, however, at what this whole statue stands on. The entire composition is placed on a pillar that is not just a simple stone column. Notice its decorating. See those beautiful, curved shapes we call volutes? These curves add elegance and movement to the whole pedestal. And right next to them is embossed decoration. And right here is something that can really surprise you, and that makes this monument something special.

Notice the front of this pillar. The relief of St. John Nepomuk is here. You might be wondering why this character is here. In the context of statues dedicated to Saint Florian, this combination is very unusual. We usually encounter other motives with these statues, but here, in Žitětín, these two important figures share one common pillar. It's like a quiet, stone conversation between two saints that creates a unique and rare combination that you can't find anywhere else so easily. This oddity makes this place something truly unique.

This statue is not just a historical object, it's a cultural treasure. This is confirmed by the fact that around the year one thousand nine hundred and ninety this monument was officially included in the list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. This tells us that its value for our heritage is immense and that we must protect it for future generations, just as it was protected by people in the year one thousand eight hundred forty-three.

I hope this brief moment with this statue has helped you better understand the history and importance of this place. This statue of St. Florian is the silent guardian of the village, who stands here and reminds us of human efforts for safety and beauty. Please continue your tour of the area and enjoy the peace and beauty of Zitěčín. Thank you for spending this moment with us. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

I recommend the tour during the sunny day in the morning, when the sun lights up the front of the statue, which allows the details of sandstone work from the nineteenth century to be excelled.

You can easily reach the village of Žitětin by car or bike on local roads that connect the different parts of the village Jičíněves.

Take the camera with you with the lens for detailed images because the statue offers interesting sculptures. The best shots will be taken from a slight distance from the road, so that the whole silhouette of the work stands out in the context of the village development.

In the immediate vicinity, you can explore the entire village of Jičíněves, which offers a quiet atmosphere of rural environment suitable for a short walk.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the surroundings awaken and the fresh green color begins to dominate the landscape. The light is fine in this period and does not shine, which is ideal for observing details of the statue. I recommend wearing layered clothes because morning temperatures can still be cold. The best time to visit is in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

Summer days bring strong sun and high temperatures that accompany dense green greenery. The statue is surrounded by full growth of plants at this time. For a more pleasant experience it is better to come early in the morning or late in the evening when the heat is less intense. Don't forget the headgear and plenty of water.

Autumn brings peace to the place and the color of leaves changes the atmosphere to golden and orange. Common morning fog can create a mysterious mood around the monument. It is advisable to wear a waterproof jacket and shoes suitable for wet terrain. For the best color experience I recommend a visit at a time when the sun shines below the horizon.

In winter the monument in the landscape is very raw, especially if everything is covered with snow or freeze. Days are short and light is often gray. It is necessary to wear a warm winter jacket, scarf and gloves. The best time for a tour is around noon, when the light is the most.
