The statue of St. John Nepomuk in Nový Bydžov is a Baroque sandstone statue from 1749, located in the church of St. Vavríce. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and originally decorated the public space of the city.

It was created during the 18th century by an unknown author, when Baroque sculpture was very popular in Bohemia. This period was manifested by rich artistic expression and strong religious motivation.

The statue is made of sandstone, standing on a flat base with a high base. The heel of the base is graduated three times, the middle part of the base is made of a vase with canning. The whole base closes four stages of the ledge. There is a pillar with a special shaped ledge, decorated with distinctive volutes with lily flowers on the sides. The front wall of the pillar has the inscription EX VOTO S: A: N: A 1749 on 12IU NIJ.

The depiction of a saint corresponds to traditional iconography. Saint John Nepomucký is dressed in canovnik's clothing with a biret on his head and his right leg is raised. He holds a crucifix in his arms at the height of his breasts, whose wood rests on his abdomen and is held with his left hand.

Originally, the statue was located in Hradec Street on Svatojanský plácká. In 1926, the inscription "RENOTED" was added to the back of the pillar. In 1983 there was damage to the statue, as a result of which it was stored in the museum and later moved to the church of St. Lawrence.

Today the statue is written in the catalogue of monuments of the National Monument Institute under the number ÚSCP 22967 / 6-675. Thanks to its historical value and baroque design it represents an important element of sacral art in Nový Bydžov, Hradec Králové district. Visiting this work offers a view into art creation in the middle of the 18th century.

Let's look at its origin. In 1749 this statue was built to decorate the public space and remind visitors of the spiritual value of St. John Nepomuk. Originally, it was located on the Svatojanská plank in Hradec Street, where it was a popular place for citizens and visitors. Over the years, the statue became a symbol of the city, but after the damage in 1983, it was necessary to move it to a safer place - the church of St. Lawrence.

Look up at the statue and notice its elegant figure carved from the sandstone. It is a great example of baroque art, which is known for its dynamic form and dramatic details. Even if we don't know the name of her creator, we can appreciate his skills and imagination.

Now pay attention to a few key moments in the history of this monument. In 1926 the inscription on the back of the pillar to which the statue belongs was added, which shows care and respect for this monument. The damage in 1983 was a great sorrow for the local community, but thanks to the rapid reaction the statue was saved from destruction and stored in a museum where it was subsequently restored.

Interesting fact is that this statue of St. John Nepomuk is not only an artistic work but also a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It is recorded under the register number of the SAR 22967 / 6-675 and is an important part of our region's cultural heritage.
