Synagoga v Českém Krumlově, known as Temple, is a unique monument built in 1909 on the western top of the city of Plešivec. This synagogue became famous not only by its architectural features, but also as the first construction in Austria-Hungary, which used the reinforced concrete construction. Its location and history make it important not only for local residents but also for visitors from around the world.

The history of the Jewish village in Český Krumlov dates back to the 14th century when their stay in the city was first documented in writing. Although John of Luxembourg allowed the establishment of four Jewish families, relations with the authorities were not ideal and in 1494 the Jews were expelled from the city. This residence ban applied until the 18th century, when several Jewish families could only settle under certain conditions. The revolutionary year of 1848 brought the break, which finally equalized the Jews to the same population of Austria-Hungary. This fundamental right was confirmed by the December Constitution of 1867.

After the establishment of the Jewish Religious Society in 1855 and its transformation into a separate ZNO in 1893, the synagogue was built as a spiritual centre for the local Jewish community. The plans for the construction were designed by Prague architect Viktor Kafka and the implementation took place under the direction of the builder Sosna between 1908 and 1909. The funding was largely secured by the local rich factory family Spiro. The building, which occupies the area of 505 m ² on the land in the town register no. 208, is a single boat with a saddle roof and an octave tower dominating the entire square.

The synagogue was designed in a new Romanesque style with Art Nouveau elements. The gem is painted blue and contains bimos moved to the east wall with aron ha-codesh, which dominates a large pseudo-rose window with the stained glass of David's star. In the ship were two rows of benches for 140 - 180 believers, left for men and right for women and children.

The synagogue served religious purposes until 1938, when the local Jewish community counted about a hundred members. After World War II, the synagogue was used as a warehouse of the castle Baroque theatre and after 1969 the Church of Czechoslovak Hussite. After 1990 the Prague ŽNO was returned.

In 2006, the Czech Union of Jewish Youth organized a two-day program which included cleaning of the synagogue before the general reconstruction, celebration of the Sabbath holiday with reading from the Torah and bar mitzvah boy from the USA, whose grandfather came from Český Krumlov.

Today stands the synagogue in Český Krumlov as a testimony of rich history and architectural innovation. Its unique design and historical value make it necessary to visit anyone interested in the heritage of Jewish communities in the Czech Republic. Visiting this monument is an opportunity to learn not only architectural beauty, but also a deep historical context that has shaped the lives of many generations.

Welcome to Plešivec, here you stand before a unique monument - a synagogue in Český Krumlov, also known as Temple. This monumental object extends over you and offers not only a historical view of the past, but also an opportunity to see its architectural beauty.

Synagoga v Českém Krumlově was built in 1909 and it is the first construction in Austria-Hungary that used the reinforced concrete construction. Its existence was provided by the local rich Spiro factory family, who contributed financially to the implementation of this ambitious project. The plans for construction were designed by Prague architect Viktor Kafka and their implementation took place between 1908 and 1909.

Look up at the facade of the synagogue where you might notice the combination of the novel style with the Art Nouveau elements. This architecture is particularly interesting thanks to the use of reinforced concrete structures, which was a very innovative technology for the period. Note also the distinctive facade and harmonious arrangement of elements that give the building its unique identity.

Although specific historical personalities associated with this monument are not known, it is important to recognize the role of synagogue as a spiritual centre for the local Jewish community. This function highlights its importance to the community and reminds us of the rich cultural heritage that has been preserved here.

It is interesting that the synagogue was not only an architectural innovation, but also symbolized new age and modern approaches to construction. In 2006, a two-day programme of the Czech Union of Jewish Youth was held here with cleaning and celebrations, which underlines its lasting importance today.

Let's move on to further examination. The synagogue of the Plešivec is not only a monument to architecture, but also a witness to historical events and changes in the community. I call on you to note the minor details around here that may bring further knowledge of this fascinating place.

Thank you for your attention and I hope they have encountered something very special here. I wish you a pleasant exploration of Český Krumlov and its rich history!

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the synagogue in Český Krumlov is autumn or spring, when the weather is pleasant and fewer people gather here. A beautiful view of the surrounding landscape and mild sunlight in these months provide a unique atmosphere.

When visiting the synagogue, take with you suitable shoes and clothes to allow you to walk comfortably. It is also important to have a camera or mobile phone to capture beautiful architecture.

Photography of the synagogue offers several interesting perspectives, especially in the early morning or evening when light is less intense and the shadow game adds depth to the images. Don't forget to also view the surrounding green areas that provide a beautiful background.

In the vicinity of the synagogue there is a historical castle Český Krumlov and its parks which can be visited as part of a visit. For families with children it is advisable to explore the local museum or enjoy relaxation on one of the many outdoor pools nearby.

Themed route

1.Synagoga v Českém Krumlově * Type: Historical landmark, cultural center * This point is the heart of your cruise route. The synagogue is an important witness to the rich Jewish history of the city and after reconstruction it serves as a modern cultural centre with exhibitions and concert programs. The visit offers a unique view of the architectural connection of historical elements with today's art scene.

2. Tanks and immediate surroundings of synagogue * Type: Architectural area, resting place * After the tour of the interior, take a short walk along a quiet courtyard and adjacent alleys. This space allows to be quiet and absorb the atmosphere of a place that is significantly different from the busier central squares of Český Krumlov. It is an ideal place for a brief pause and reflection on the history of the community that once lived here.

3. Interior exposition and exhibition space * Type: Museum exposition, cultural program * Within the synagogue building itself there are variable exhibitions and thematic exhibitions focused on Jewish culture and history of the region. A tour of these spaces extends further knowledge of the life and traditions of local people in the past. There are often special guided tours that provide valuable additional information.

4. Architectural details and exterior of the building * Type: Architectural monument, photographic destination * When leaving the premises, pay attention to the exterior appearance of the building and its architectural elements. The facade and surrounding buildings are evidenced by the specific character of the district and offer interesting photographic motifs. This final point of the route allows aesthetically to end the visit and to take a visual impression from this important cultural place.

This route is designed to focus exclusively on the main target and its immediate surroundings, as specified. Since the line "Surrounding" contained no other specific places, the route was modified to fully exploit the potential of the monument itself and its immediate site. This ensures that the visitor receives a comprehensive experience from one place without having to travel to more remote locations that are not specified in the entry.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: Spring season brings freshness and awakening nature to the surroundings of Český Krumlov, which surrounds historical buildings. Light is soft and pleasant in these months, which creates a calm atmosphere suitable for observing details. We recommend wearing layered clothes because morning cold can change quickly during the day. It is best to arrive early in the morning when tourist groups are even less numerous.

Summer: Summer months are characterized by intense sun and long days that highlight the colors of historical architecture. The atmosphere is very lively and busy, which is typical of the main summer season. Due to large crowds of visitors, it is best to plan to arrive in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the greatest heat and the greatest rush of people. Don't forget enough fluids and headgear.

Autumn: Autumn offers a beautiful palette of gold and brown colors in the surrounding landscape. Foggy mornings give the place a tajemeni and quiet touch, which is ideal for photography. Due to the variable weather and wind we recommend to choose practical and ventilating clothes. The number of visitors is decreasing gradually, allowing us to perceive history in much greater privacy.

Winter: Winter time turns the surroundings into a quiet and freezing landscape that looks very dignified. A short day and weaker light create a cozy atmosphere in the interior. It is necessary to count on shorter opening times and significantly lower temperatures, therefore it is necessary to have very warm and waterproof equipment. This season is best suited for those who seek peace and solitude without large groups of tourists.
