Temenice is a historical village in the Olomouc Region, which is now the local part of Šumperka. The estate stretches six kilometers along the Temenec stream to the northwest. It is remarkable in its development from the medieval village to the agricultural character with typical French goods to the expansion of the industrial revolution.

The first traces of human settlements in the surrounding area come from the Bronze Age, namely the Silesian period of the Lužice culture. From this time there were uncovered pits, clay and remains of the building with dimensions of 2,4 × 2,6 metres. The village Temenice itself was founded around 1180.

From the point of view of architecture Temenice was typical of its linearity along the creek. In 1889, when Lower and Upper Temenice merged, it was a six-kilometer forestry-agricultural village. The construction was characterised mainly by 62 estates with a typical French court. Later, an industrial installation, including a brick and textiles plant, was added to the picture of the village.

Throughout history, ownership of the village changed. In the mid-15th century it was owned by Benedict of Valdštejn and in 1493 it was acquired by Jan ze Žerotína. In 1594, there was a battle with the city of Šumperk on Temenical Goods. The village was significantly affected by a 30-year war; In 1643 it was looted and occupied by Swedish troops under the leadership of General Arvid Wittenberg in 1646. Later, in 1866, after the Battle of Hradec Kralove, a Prussian occupation of Knobelsdorf Brigade took place.

Significant industrial development occurred at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1905, Willibald Lubich and his sons took over the silk factory by A. Schimitscheck. Expanded it to a linen linen factory with 180 weaving states and 400 employees. The Hermesdorf brick with 100 employees produced approximately 5 million roof bags a year. In addition, there were workshops for grinding crystal glass, tanneries and the production of soap, candles, leather goods or brushes. The educational importance of the municipality was underlined by the fact that there was a state economic school and a state agricultural school that moved here from Šumperka in 1875.

The tragic events occurred on 31 March 1945, when 16 Czech patriots were shot at the Bratrušov shooting range by German soldiers. The victims were buried in a mass grave. They exhumed the bodies in January 1946 and then placed them in an honest grave on the road between Bratrušov and Šumperk.

After 1945, most of the German population was relocated. The village was incorporated into the city of Šumperka on 4 May 1950 and in 1959 the collectivization of the Single Agricultural Cooperative Temenice was completed. The status of the local part of the municipality was lost in early 1976.

Temenice is now located at the east foot of the Haj hill and is connected to Šumperk. Its history offers a view of changes in rural settlements and industrial development of the region. Visiting this place allows you to map developments from prehistoric to modern history.

Welcome to Temenica. You are now standing in a place that surrounds you with its unusual character. If you look around you, you'll notice you're not in a classic compact village with a central square, but there's a long belt of living in front of you. This village is truly unique in its linearity because it stretches up to six kilometres along the Temenec stream, which forms the natural artery of the whole landscape. Feel this atmosphere of calm and expansiveness, which is with you at this very moment. It's a space where water, nature and human habitations meet in a harmonious series that will lead you northwest of Šumperka. Let's stop at the very beginning of this place. To understand why Temenice looks like this, we have to go back deep into the past. Although the village itself was founded around the year a thousand hundred and eighty, human footprints are much older here. The first evidence of the settlement in this area has led us to the Bronze Age. So imagine that beneath your feet lies a layer of history thousands of years ago. At the time of its establishment in the twelfth century, the village was designed to maximise access to water and fertile soil in the valley, leading to the long shape that you see today. In the early days, agricultural work ruled here and the rhythm of life determined the wading of the creek and the rotation of the seasons. Now pay attention to the surrounding development and architecture you perceive during your journey. Although the faces of houses changed over the centuries, in history Temenice was famous for its specific arrangement. Notice the layout of the spaces around the buildings. In the past, sixty-two goods were dominated, which had a very distinctive appearance with the so-called French Court. This type of development was typical of certain areas of Central Europe and meant a more closed, compact arrangement of economic buildings around the internal space. Even though you may no longer see each of these courts in its original form, this structure has left a mark on how the village is laid out. If we move forward in time, we'll see how the character of Temenice gradually changed. In the nineteenth century, a break came. The agricultural character began to give way to industrial development. At that time, textile factories and bricks began to emerge, bringing new life to the village, machinery noise and a new layer of inhabitants. The industry changed the face of the place from a quiet village to a prosperous centre of crafts and production. This transition from plough to weaving and burning bricks shows how Temenice has managed to adapt to new times. The history of this place is also confused with the fates of prominent personalities and dramatic events. Memories of Temenice are associated with names such as Benedikt z Valdštejna or Jan ze Žerotína, who have left a trail within their influence in the region. The name Arvid Wittenberg is also one of those related to the history of this region. But life in Temenica wasn't always easy. If you look at the chronology of events, you will find that the village has had to overcome many difficult trials. Already in the year one thousand two hundred thirty-nine part of the village burned down in the fire that hit the Shumper monastery. The fire was the greatest enemy of wooden structures at the time. Even darker shadows cast events from the war period. Imagine the year one thousand six hundred forty-three when the village was looted, and only three years later, in one thousand six hundred forty-six, it was occupied by Swedish troops. These events from the time of the Thirty Years' War left deep wounds in people and probably in the form of a village itself. History teaches us that Temenice has always been vulnerable to its position, but at the same time incredibly resilient. The key moment for the modern form of the village was the merge of the Lower and Upper Temenice in the year one thousand eight hundred and eighty-nine into one whole. With this act, the old borders have been erased and a united community has emerged that we know today. However, we are most affected by the memory of spring of the year a thousand nine hundred forty-five. On March 30, a tragic event took place at the Bratrušov shooting range, when 16 Czech patriots were shot. It's a deep and painful blow in the memory of this place, which reminds us of the price people paid for their freedom and identity. Now let's move on to something that might interest you as a mystery or an interesting thing. Think about how fascinating the fact is that in a place where you see ordinary houses and roads today, people have lived in the Bronze Age. It is incredible to imagine that thousands of years ago people chose this very valley along the Temenec stream as the ideal place to live. What drew them to this place so strongly? Was it just water, or in this landscape structure, did they feel something that maybe we now only view as a peaceful landscape? This continuity of human existence in one place for thousands of years is truly unique. Also notice how powerful the linearity of the village is. Most municipalities develop into a circle or around one centre, but Temenice decided to go along the river path. It's like the whole village is one long road where every house tells its own story. It's an architecture adapted to nature, not the other way around. Now that you have learned about the basic milestones, the tragedies and the flourishing of this place, I suggest you continue your walk. Let yourself flow through the stream and explore the surroundings at your own pace. Follow the details of the houses, see the noise of water, and think about all the generations that passed through here before you. From prehistoric settlers to medieval farmers to workers of textiles. Each of them added a small piece to the painting that makes up today's Temenice. Explore the surrounding landscape, maybe you'll stop by some of the remains of the old estates, or just think about the silence that today rules where the brick machines used to sound. Temenice is a place that does not force itself to be a noisy monument, but with its modesty and length tells the story of endurance and adaptation. Thank you for spending this short introduction to Temenice history. We wish you a pleasant and inspiring walk through this fascinating valley. Say goodbye to our guide and let the atmosphere of this unique place consume you. Have a good trip.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring and autumn months, when the landscape around the Temenec stream is greenest and light soft.

Transport to the area is possible by car and public transport. The village is located at the east foot of the Haj hill and near the Temenec stream, which means that access routes can be locally narrow or unasphalted. The current public transport connection should be verified in the search engine before the journey, as the lines can change.

For a walk around the village and the surrounding area, take with you comfortable shoes for hiking, because the terrain along the creek and at the foot of the hill Háj can be uneven. We recommend taking water and light refreshments as there may not always be refreshments near the monument. If you are planning a longer walk, don't forget the back layer, because the weather in the mountains can change quickly.

It is ideal for photography in the morning or late afternoon when light falls at an angle and highlights the texture of the buildings and surrounding vegetation. The best places for the pictures are along the Temenec stream, where the water forms beautiful reflections, and at the foot of the grove hill, where a panoramic view of the village can be captured. Try to avoid sharp midday sun, which can create hard shadows and reduce contrast in photos.

The surrounding areas are the municipalities of Bratrušov, Rapotin, Vikřovice and the city of Šumperk, which are about 30 minutes away. These locations offer additional possibilities for short trips and exploring the region. For families with children, walking along the Temenec stream is a great activity where they can observe nature and water flows. However, it is important to ensure the safety of children near water and on uneven terrain.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring the surroundings of the monument awaken to life and the young green creates a fresh frame around historical walls. The sun hits the object at a pleasant angle in the morning, which is ideal for observing details from the outside. We recommend shoes suitable for wet terrain and light coating of clothing, because spring weather is usually unstable.

In summer, the landscape is dominated by green and bright, bright light, which highlights the texture of building material. In the high season there are more people around, so it is best to leave early in the morning or at dusk when the air is colder.

Autumn brings golden colors and fog to the landscape, which provide a mysterious and melancholy atmosphere. Soft evening light is very pleasant for the eye and creates a quiet environment. Hot clothes and waterproof shoes are suitable as the way to the building can be covered with wet leaves.

In winter there is a monument in silence and minimalism, especially if a layer of snow covers it. The contrast of the white landscape and darker walls of the object creates a dramatic visual effect. Due to the frost and possible slippery surface, high-quality winter footwear with anti-slip soles and warm clothing are essential.
