Trčkovský palác Palace
Trčkovský palác is a late Renaissance building located in Prague 1 in Hradčany, built in 1622-1625. This four-winged object, formerly known as the Trauttmansdorff House, is an important cultural monument and represents a combination of Renaissance disposition with elements of an early Baroque.
The palace was built for the Trčková family from Lipa during the stabilisation period in Bohemia under the rule of Habsburg after the Thirty Years War. The building consists of the lower side of Pohořelka near the mouth of Loretanská street and Úvozu. Despite its long development, the building has retained its original Renaissance character, while the remains of the former Gothic wall are still visible in the wall.
Architecturally, it's an extensive quadruple object with an inner courtyard, formerly known as the Wide Court. The main facade has a one-story four-story facade, the middle two-axis part of which ends with a triangle front and volutes on the sides. On the ground floor there is a barefoot stone portal and two stone shop entrances. The side facade towards Loretanská Street is one storey with 16 axes; Four shield attachments come out of the attic and on the ground floor they form an arch of eight not equally wide arches. The facade at Úvoz street is two-storey, where the lower part becomes three-storey; has fourteen axes and two polygonal arches. On the ground floor of this part there is an entrance with rectangular stone lining.
After the original owners, Trčkovů from Lipa, the palace was modified in the years 1660-1663 in a ranobarek style for Trauttmansdorffy. Since 1964, the building has been listed in the state list of cultural monuments.
Other important events and names appear in the history of the house. Mikolas Ales lived in the palace in 1885-1886. According to the historical report from 1928, asyl Philanthropic cooperative was located in the building.

Welcome to Prague, in its historic part, which is now surrounding you with its unique atmosphere. You're standing right in front of the Pot House. If you look around you, you will feel that you are in a place where history is constantly intertwined with the present. This palace, which you are currently observing, is located on the bottom of the hill Pohořelec, in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods of our city, in Hradčany. Feel the calm but noble energy of this place. In front of you is a building that carries traces of many centuries and many different styles that gradually intersect.
Let's go back together to when this palace was born. Imagine the beginning of the seventeenth century. The world around us was changing, great powers ruled, and new stability began to emerge in our countries after the great wars. It was during this period, between the years one thousand six hundred twenty-two and one thousand six hundred twenty-five, that this building was created. It was intended for the important family Trčka of Lipa. These nobles sought their place in the new political reality that the Habsburgs shaped. The palace was therefore a symbol of the rise and effort to strengthen the position at a time when society was finally starting to settle after long years of unrest.
Now pay attention to the very form of the building that stands right before your eyes. Notice her character. Trčkovský palác is a fascinating example of how different artistic directions can connect in one object. The main face of the building is late Renaissance, which means you can still feel the older, balanced and harmonious tradition in its proportions. However, if you look closely, you will also see the elements of the early Baroque. These new elements were added to the palace later, namely in the years of a thousand six hundred sixty to a thousand six hundred sixty-three, when the building was modified by the House of Trauttmansdorff.
Look at the main part of the building. You see that one-story facade that's built on four axes. These regularity and order are typical of the architecture of the time. Now, raise your eyes even higher. Notice the interesting part up there where the shield is located. It's not simple, but it's decorated with volutes. These curves, these spiral shapes, are the baroque elements that give the building movement and elegance. It is a fascinating view of how the older Renaissance base becomes a more modern, baroque whole. However, the whole building managed to retain its original character, which is very rare in this place.
If we go through the history of this place, we'll find many interesting names and events. Even if we don't know the names of the particular architects who decided to lay these stones, we can feel their championships in every detail. The palace was not just the seat of the nobles. Over the centuries, he served various people and institutions. For example, in the second half of the nineteenth century, exactly in the years one thousand eight hundred eighty-five to eighty-six, the famous Czech artist Mikolas Ales lived here. Imagine what ideas and images this space could have inspired. The fact that such an important person lived here for our culture gives this place another layer of depth.
Later, in the year one thousand nine hundred twenty-eight, there was asyl philanthropic cooperative in these premises. This tells us that the palace also served for noble purposes to help people. This transformation from a noble mansion to a welfare site shows how the role of buildings in our city has changed over time. Finally, in the year one thousand nine hundred sixty-four, this building was officially recognised as an important part of our heritage and entered in the state's list of cultural monuments. This ensures that its beauty and history are preserved for future generations.
If you want to find the real mystery of this place, you need to look even deeper, even below the very foundation of the palace. Before it began to build here in the seventeenth century, there was a Gothic wall in this place. Imagine the old stones that stood here much earlier when Prague was still a medieval fortress. So Trčkovský palác is not just on the ground, but is on layers of history that are deep beneath your feet. This connection between the medieval defenses and the Renaissance palace creates an invisible network that connects the various epochs of our city.
It's fascinating how different worlds collide in one small space. You have stability after the war, you have noble ambitions, you have artistic inspiration, and you have ancient walls that were here long before the first builders of this palace. It all creates a unique atmosphere that you're experiencing right now.
Now, please, continue your walk. The castles and surroundings of Pohořelka have much more to tell you. Every next step can lead you to another memory, another history, or another secret. Don't forget to stop and look at this palace again, perhaps not as a mere building, but as a living witness for the many centuries that have taken place here. Thank you for joining us on this short journey through time. We will brighten you with a pleasant continuation in discovering the beauty of our Prague. Goodbye.
