tvrz Doubravice Fortress

Tvrz Doubravice is a historical fortification located in the village of Doubravice u Volyně near Čestice, situated on the right bank of the Peklov stream. This monument has been protected as a cultural heritage site since 1963 due to its significance and remnants that offer insights into medieval architecture and local history. The tvrz is notable for its surviving structures, including a two-story hexagonal tower with stonemasonry and a partially preserved fireplace, along with parts of the surrounding wall and bastion.

The earliest documented owner was Habrek z Doubravice, mentioned between 1251 and 1274. His lineage continued through his son Vojtěch, noted in 1274, and later another Habrek z Doubravice, considered by historian August Sedláček to be a grandson, active from 1317 to 1327. By the fifteenth century, Markvart and Bohuněk z Doubravice were known residents in 1406. The last family member was Volf z Doubravice, who lived there until 1468. Following his tenure, the estate transitioned into the hands of vladykové z Čestic. In 1520, Václav z Čestic, also known as Přech z Čestic, resided at the tvrz and was involved in an incident where he and Zdeňek Malovec attacked merchants. This led to a joint force from Písek and Vodňany capturing and burning down the fortification. Subsequently, Adam Řepický ze Sudoměře acquired the estate in 1532, selling it before 1540 to Vilém Přech z Čestic, who was noted as a royal procurator at that time.

Architecturally, Tvrz Doubravice's original construction details remain largely undocumented. By the early sixteenth century, legal documents described the tvrz as a ruin. The surviving structures include a two-story hexagonal tower with remnants of stonemasonry and a fireplace on its second floor. A stonemason’s window in the eastern wall provides light to this level. Additionally, parts of the surrounding defensive walls and a bastion remain.

Throughout its history, Tvrz Doubravice witnessed significant events reflective of broader regional dynamics during the late medieval period. This era was marked by political and social changes in Bohemia, including tensions between local nobility and centralized royal power under the Luxembourg dynasty. The attack on merchants in 1520 highlights occasional unrest involving trade activities.

Today, Tvrz Doubravice stands as a testament to its historical significance, with visitors able to explore its remnants amidst the serene setting of the southern part of Doubravice village near Čestice. While much of the original structure has succumbed to time, the preserved elements offer a glimpse into medieval fortification techniques and local history.
