U Červené lišky House
House U Červené lišky is a historic building in Prague 1 in Old Town Square. He's using his rear track to reach Skin Street. It is a cultural monument of the Czech Republic with Romanesque foundations, which was gradually rebuilt in Gothic and early Baroque style. The building is now known primarily by the location opposite the Old Town Clock and the location of the famous restaurant.
The first written mention of the house dates back to 1401, but the very foundation of the building is older and dates back to the Romanesque period. In the 15th century, the original building was replaced by a Gothic new building. Another medieval adjustment was likely to take place after 1508.
Around 1700, the house underwent a significant reconstruction into the early Baroque form. Thanks to the documented dispute with the neighbor, it is known that the work began in 1694. Within this change, the original home sign was replaced by the relief of the Virgin Mary. The attic was built into the building in 1923. The front facing to Kožná Street shows a new style, while the entrance remains baroque. In the interior is a statue of Jan Nepomucký from around 1745, created by Ignác František Platzer. During modern modifications in the 19th and 20th centuries, the original Baroque staircase was destroyed.
Other names have appeared in history; The house was sometimes referred to as the Serps or the Golden Wolf. More recently, the building became the subject of record financial transactions. In 2017, over half a billion crowns were purchased by Coast Capital Partners. The price per square metre was approximately 230 thousand crowns. It was at that time the highest known sum paid for the house in the centre of the Czech Republic. From 1993 to 2013, the Komerční banka branch was located in the building and the Museum of Illusions worked here from March 2018 until the end of 2021.
In December 2021, the house was purchased by the RSJ investment group, which joined the extensive reconstruction in cooperation with the monuments. The most significant step was to remove the insensitive post-revolutionary modifications, namely the glass tube and the lift from the inner courtyard, which was then covered. At present there is a restaurant 420 on the ground floor and cellar part of the house, operated by Michelin head chef Radek Kašpárek.
The house U Červené lišky presents a layered history of Prague centre from Romanesque base to modern reconstruction. It is an important architectural element of the Old Town Square, which is worth visiting thanks to its authenticity and current gastronomic use.

Welcome to the very heart of Prague, the beautiful Old Town Square. You're standing in front of a house called U Červené lišky. When you look at him now, you see a building that tells the story of many centuries in its form. It's a place where the history of an old town meets the noise of the present. Note how this object naturally engages in the rhythm of the square, even though it stretches its rear part to Skin Street. It's a hidden bridge between two parts of the centre that connects the open area of the square with the narrow streets of the old town.
Now let's look deeper into the past together to understand what lies beneath this facade. The history of this house is a fascinating journey through time. The first written mention of this place dates back to a thousand four hundred and one. Imagine how many ages and events this house has seen since. But what you see today is not what was here in the fifth century. The foundations of this house are even older, from the Roman era, which was the time of the first stone buildings. Later, in the 15th century, the building was replaced by a new Gothic-style building, which probably reflected the city's bloom at that time.
Now pay attention to the overall appearance of the building. What you perceive today is primarily the result of a major reconstruction that began in the year of the thousand six hundred and ninety-four. At that time, the early Baroque was in fashion, and it was in this style that the house was remodeled around a thousand seven hundred. When you look at the facade, feel the atmosphere of the time when architecture tried to be more representative and elegant. The building is today properly protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, which means that the state recognises its immense value to our history. In more recent times, namely in the year one thousand nine hundred twenty-three, the attic was built, which extended the house further. And if you're interested in the present, in the year two thousand twenty-one, the house was bought by an investment group that began a massive reconstruction to return the building to its full glory.
When we think about who worked in this house, we find interesting names. The persons associated with this place include Ignác František Platzer, for example. Even though you may not know him from the textbooks, he left a trail that is palpable today. If you had the opportunity to look inside, you would encounter a very valuable piece of art. It is a statue of Jan Nepomuk, created by Platzer in the year of the thousand seven hundred forty-five. It's a beautiful proof of religious religion and artistic taste. Another name that connects to the house is Radek Kašpárek. Each of these personalities has brought their own chapter to the history of the house.
Now I want to impress you with something you can't see at first sight. Do you know that houses in Prague often changed their names? This house, which we now know as U Červené lišky, has been described in the past by other names. In some times, it was called the Serps or the Golden Wolf. It's fascinating to think how the names were changed along with the owners or what was housed in the house. Each name carries a different story, a different mood and a different era of Prague life. It's kind of like a riddle where every generation added their own piece.
In addition to these names and styles, there is one interesting thing that shows the value of this place nowadays. In the year two thousand seventeen, the price per square metre in this area was very high, which only confirms that owning a piece of history in the Old Town Square is today an enormous privilege. Today there is a famous restaurant in the building, so the house still serves as a host for people, only in a more modern style.
Take one last look at the overall design of the building. Feel the contrast between the Romanesque foundations, the Gothic past and the baroque appearance. It's basically a layered pie of Prague history. Every stone here tells of the people who lived here, worked and formed. It's a place that survived wars, fires and regime changes, and it still stands here to remind us where we come from.
I hope this short trip to the history of the U Červené lišky house helped you to better perceive the beauty of this place. Now I invite you to take a look around in peace, perhaps take a moment to rest in a local restaurant or continue to discover other gems of Old Town. Prague has its secret story hidden in every house and this was just one of many. I wish you a beautiful rest of the day and a pleasant exploration of our historical center. Goodbye.
Tips for visitors
The best time to visit is early morning or at dusk, when the light is soft and the historical facades of the house excel in peace without a large number of people. For transportation to the centre of Prague, use the public connections that will take you to the vicinity of the square; Check the current connection in the Internet search engine. During the photo shoot we recommend to focus on detailed decorating of the house from the outside and a view from Skin Street where the building is seen from a different angle. The best light to capture architecture is in the morning. In the vicinity, within short walks, visit the Old Town Square, the Old Town Clock, the Blue Goose House, the Golden Crown House or explore the Kožnou Street. Families with children will appreciate the story of the Romanesque foundations of the house and the search for animal motives in the name of the monument, which helps to keep the smallest attention during a stroll through the historical center.

Autumn brings golden shades of leaves and melancholy mood. The lighting is gold and falls at a lower angle, which highlights the details of the facades. It is practical to carry a waterproof coat and shoes suitable for wet weather.
Zimą is ruled by freezing calm and short days, which previously alternates evening lighting. The atmosphere is quiet and mysterious, especially in advent time. Hot clothes, wool accessories and a firm sole are essential to prevent slipping on the frozen surface.
