The central cemetery of Jihlava is the largest and most important burial site in the town, located in the western part of the village. Since 1869 it has served as the main resting place for the people of Jihlava. This cemetery is remarkable by its historical value and architectural elements that reflect the time of its creation.

Founded in 1867, he began to serve funerals from September 1869. The first man to be buried was Matej Wet. Before that, the inhabitants of Jihlava were buried in the cemetery near the Holy Spirit Church, which was closed down in 1868 and destroyed in 1891. From this older burial ground to the central cemetery, valuable tombstones were transferred. At the same time as a new burial ground was opened, a Jewish cemetery was established not far from the central cemetery in the U Treště street.

The cemetery is a remarkable chapel of the Ascension of the Lord, built between 1893 and 1894. This chapel was designed by architect Richard Völkell in a neo-gothic style, while the original design was prepared by prof. August Prokop. The chapel later served as a ceremonial hall. There are also tombstones made by the company Adolf Loose older, which adds another historical and artistic importance to this place.

After the First World War, a military burial ground was established in the Central Cemetery, where they were buried by the fallen of various nationalities. This fact highlights the role of the cemetery as a place of monument and worship for many generations of the people of Jihlava.

In 1976, a crematorium was built on the northern edge of the city, in the part of Bedřichov. This broadened the possibility of burying and at the same time preserved the tradition of the central cemetery as the main place to relax the people of the city.

Today ústřední hřbitov v Jihlavě is not only a monument to architecture and history, but also a living place where the past and the present meet. His visit offers a view of Jihlava's rich history and a reminder to all those who rest here.

The value of the central cemetery lies not only in its architectural elements, but also in the fact that it is witnessing many generations and historical events. It's a place that resembles the importance of the monument and the worship of the past. The visit to the cemetery offers a unique opportunity to explore the history of Jihlava and appreciate its cultural heritage.
