Verušičky is a chateau in the core of the same-name village in the district of Karlovy Vary. Their present form comes from a neo-gothic reconstruction from the nineteenth century. Since 1964, the building has been protected as a cultural monument.

The roots of Verusicek dates back to the 1950s when Volf ze Štampachu acquired them and established a new fortress estate. This was first documented in 1556. After Volfe died in 1557, his daughter Anna inherited the estate. First, however, she had to sue her uncle Kryštof of Štampach for the right to property. Anna later married Sezim Miřkovsky from Stropčice. The husbands sold the estate together in 1601 to Jachy Ondrej Šlik.

Among the other owners were Prokop Dvořecký from Olbramovice, since 1605 Stepan Šlik and Fabian Šebestián Pröllhofer from Perkersdorf, who bought the farm in 1608 and joined it to the Manor Luk, through which Verušičky remained until 1711. Since the 18th century, the owners have been taking turns more and more. In 1711 the estate was bought by Count František Helfried Voračický z Paběnic, but four years later it was acquired by František Ladislav Josef Nesslinger ze Schelchengrabenu. The following was a long chain: Marie Elizabeth Kfelířová from Zakšov (1741), František Xaver Putz from Brandenbach (1758), František Antonín Nostic (1774), Friedrich Nostic and Kaspar Friedrich Josef from Overschie (1798) and later his son Renatus. It was the Nostics who had the old fort rebuilt into a Baroque chateau.

In the early nineteenth century (1810) Charles of Thysebaert won the estate with his son August. Since 1830 it belonged to a small town man Jan Antonín Hladik, after his death his niece Antonia of Neuberg. They followed married Joseph and Vilhelmina Hetzel. Karlovy Vary builder Josef Waldert bought the chateau on January 24, 1908 for 180 760 gold pieces and lived here with his family. During World War I, namely April 4, 1918, Waldert donated the chateau to his son Joseph and his wife Martha (born Deimling). The son sold it during World War II, April 11, 1942, to Meldior Dresser. Dresser was seized approximately three years later. In the second half of the twentieth century, the chateau was taken over by the state farm. The low maintenance resulted in a gradual devastation of the building, which culminated in the partial collapse of the northern wing port.

The construction history of Verusicek begins with a single rectangular fortress with dimensions of 27 × 18 meters with buildings of up to 1.5 metres thick. On the ground floor there was a corridor, kitchen and sides of another room. According to the old descriptions, the rooms had arches, but they were removed during the Baroque reconstruction. At that time, a storey east wing with a new staircase was formed, a risalite was built on the north front and in the northwest of the Nарohi, the ground floor room was won by a vaulted vault with triangular sections. A new entrance with a two-arm staircase was set up on the south side. The nineteenth century brought a neo-gothic reconstruction: the remaining vaults were destroyed, the stairwell in front of the south front was replaced by a balcony and two northern wings were decorated with eight-sided turrets.

The chateau stands in the middle of the village, but is not accessible to the public. There are no tourist routes through the village or its nearby surroundings, so Verušičky retains the character of a rather hidden object particularly interesting for architecturally focused visitors and lovers of local history.

Verušičky is a castle in the middle of the village of the same name in the Karlovy Vary district. Its present appearance dates from a neo-Gothic reconstruction in the nineteenth century. Since 1964, the castle has been protected as a cultural monument.

Verušičky originally belonged to the estate of Luka castle. In the middle of the sixteenth century, it was acquired by Volf of Štampachu, who established an independent estate there with a fortress, which is first documented in 1556. Volf died a year later and the estate was inherited by his daughter Anna. However, she first had to take legal action against her uncle Kryštof of Štampachu. With her husband Sezima Miřkovský of Stropčic, she then sold the estate in 1601 to Jáchym Ondřej Šlik. After several rapid changes of ownership, Fabián Šebestián Pröllhofer of Perkersdorf purchased Verušičky in 1608 and rejoined it to Luka. Together with it, they remained there until 1711.

Also in the eighteenth century, the owners changed frequently. Among them were the Voračičtí of Paběnice, the Nesslingers, the Putzes of Brandenbach, and the Nostices. It was the Nostices who had the old fortress reconstructed into a Baroque castle. From 1830, the estate was owned by the Prague merchant Jan Antonín Hladík, and after him by his niece.

In 1908, the castle was purchased by Josef Waldert, a Karlovy Vary city builder, and he lived there with his family. In 1918, he gave it to his son Josef. He sold the castle during the Second World War, and the new owner had it confiscated three years later. In the second half of the twentieth century, the castle was used by a state farm. Due to its neglectful maintenance, the building deteriorated and the annex of the northern wing even partially collapsed.

From the old fortress, part of the masonry remained in the northern wing. It was a two-storey rectangular building measuring twenty-seven by eighteen metres. Its walls were as thick as one and a half metres. On the ground floor there was a corridor, a kitchen, and two pairs of other rooms. These were vaulted according to old descriptions, but the vaults probably disappeared during the Baroque reconstruction. At that time, a two-storey eastern wing was added with a new staircase, and the facade of the northern wing received a risalit, that is, a slightly protruding part of the facade. A new entrance with a double-flight staircase was created on the south side.

The neo-Gothic reconstruction removed almost all the vaults. The staircase in front of the south facade was replaced by a balcony, and the two corners of the northern wing were decorated with octagonal turrets.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during sunny days in late spring or early autumn, when the surrounding landscape of the Doupo Mountains is the most photogenic. Due to the poor state of the building, we recommend planning the visit in daylight when the movement in the exterior is safer.

You can easily get to the village Verušičky by car. We recommend that public transport be checked in the current search engines because the frequency of connections may vary.

For a visit, wear fixed shoes suitable for the field and clothing to protect you from dust or dirt. Remember the charged camera or phone, as the chateau offers a unique atmosphere for lovers of historical ruins and architecture.

The best light for shooting the chateau is in the morning when the sun lights up the front facade. Focus on details of baroque elements and contrast between historical architecture and surrounding greenery. In the vicinity you can visit the castle Luka or explore the picturesque landscape of the Doupovska Mountains.

We recommend to families with children a walk around the village Verušičky and surroundings. Due to the poor technical condition of the chateau, care must be taken and the children should be kept under constant supervision because the entry into the inner spaces is not safe.

For kids

Imagine going back to the past, when the manor Verušičky was the largest and most beautiful in the entire region. The village was full of life, people lived in harmony with nature and the chateau was the heart of the village.

Where today stands a beautiful chateau, there used to be only a small estate of the Earl of Verusicek. But over time, the mansion was changing, rebuilding, and becoming as if it were another world. Who lived here? The count who ruled over the village, but also the ordinary people who lived near the chateau.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring around the chateau Verušičky brings awakening nature and fine, soft light that beautifully highlights the contours of the historical building. The atmosphere is very fresh and calm this time of year. Practically we recommend choosing layered clothes and fixed shoes because after winter the soil around the monument can still be wet and soft. It's the perfect time for those who want to escape the crowds.

In the summer months the chateau is surrounded by dense greenery, which creates a living contrast to its present state. The sun shines the strongest, creating sharp shadows, but also bright colors. In the main summer season we recommend arriving as early as possible in the morning to avoid the greatest rush of people and the most intense heat. Don't forget enough fluids and headgear.

Autumn season offers the most colors and nostalgic environment that perfectly matches the history of the place. Morning fog and golden leaves create a magical and a little mysterious atmosphere. For best experiences and photogenic pictures it is best to visit the chateau in the morning. Due to the cooling wind, it is recommended to wear a warmer jacket and scarf.

Winter in the Karlovy Vary Region can be raw, which gives the monument a raw and melancholy touch. The gray sky and possible snow highlight the loneliness of this place. Since the days are short, plan a visit around noon to use maximum daylight. It is necessary to wear very warm and wind-resistant clothes because the surrounding terrain can be very cold.
