The water plant in Litni is a functional technical monument from 1894, which serves as a gas station for supplying the village with drinking water. The building is located in the cadastral area of Bělec u Litna in the district of Beroun and represents an important evidence of industrial development of agricultural large estates at the end of the 19th century.

The construction was built according to the project of March 1894 as part of the modernization efforts of the owner of the Lithuanian large estate Josef Šebestián Daubka. The reason for the construction of the water pipeline and the gas station was the need to provide enough water for expanding economic operations, namely for a newly built brewery, malt and distillery.

Architectural is a ground floor building with a saddle roof with a 29-metre-high brick chimney. The original technical solution used two steam boilers to drive the pump. In addition to the building itself, the area also includes the original water, connecting line between wells and tanks, cutting marks reinforced with quarry stone and collecting well.

Since 11 February 2012, the building has been registered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic as a water supply network of former large estate. The owner and operator of the monument is the town Liteň. Since 2013, the waterworks have been part of the Liteň Educational Path, where they feature as a stop of the A9 on a green circuit leading from Litna via Lower Vence and Bělez.

The water plant is remarkable in its longevity, as it has been operating with minimal modifications for more than 130 years. The current operation provides drinking water for the lower pressure zone of the Lithuanian tap; the service station takes approximately 200 cubic metres of water per day from the spring. Excessive quantities, which are not acumulated in the water tower, flow into the local stream. The upper pressure zone in the hills above the village is served by a separate watercourse under the hill of the Marmor.

This construction represents a unique example of the continuously used technical infrastructure, which retained its original form and function. A visit to the water plant offers an opportunity to look into the history of industrial rural development and appreciate the craftsmanship quality of the objects from the end of the 19th century.

Welcome to the water station in Litni. You just stopped by one of the most important technical objects in the entire area. You are standing right in front of a place that is not only witnessing ancient times, but also a living example of human efforts to progress and control natural forces. Look around you and first pay attention to what immediately attracts you. In front of your eyes is a tall, brick chimney that dominates the whole area. Its height is exactly twenty-nine meters and its presence immediately reminds you that you are at an object where steam and water were once in full swing. Next to it stands the main building, which has a characteristic saddle roof and looks very stable and dignified. Feel the atmosphere of the place where the industrial tradition combines with the calm of this agricultural landscape.

Let us now return together to the time when this object was created. It's 1894. The world around you is changing rapidly in this period, people are looking for ways to meet the growing needs of the emerging economy. This waterworks was not only built as a decoration, but as a necessary part of the great estate in Litni. The need for water was huge at the time and had to be very reliable. Imagine those operations back then that required a constant and strong supply of clean resources. It was absolutely essential for expanding economic activities to have water for the brewery, for the malting plant and for the distillery. These three pillars of the economy at that time were interconnected and all depended on how effectively we can draw and distribute water. That is why the project of this service station was so carefully developed. This whole construction process was proof of how important industrial development was for the agricultural goods at the time.

Now that you know the story of origin, pay attention to what you see right in front of you within the architecture of this place. Look at the main building with its saddle roof. It's a ground-floor object that was designed to be practical and durable. But what must really fascinate you is the tall chimney. Notice the work with the brick. Each brick has been stored with care to withstand high temperatures while resisting all weather effects for decades. This chimney was not just a simple exit for smoke, it was a symbol of strength and technical progress. In the original era, there was no electricity as we know it today. This whole mechanism was driven by two steam boilers. Imagine the hot couple, the constant movement of the machines, and the sound that must have been ringing at this place in 1894. The architecture is purely functional, but in this functionality lies its incredible beauty and strength.

Speaking of this place, we can't forget the people who were behind this development and who shaped life in this neighborhood. Although the names of many technicians and workers have remained hidden in history, the name of Josef Šebestián Daubka is closely linked to this environment and to the entire economic background. He was a man who at that time decided on development and what technologies would be used in this area. Thanks to people like him, these technological innovations in the village could spread so quickly and become the basis for the prosperity of the whole estate. It was a period when personal decisions and visionaries were directly changing the form of the landscape through such solid, masonry structures, which today stands as proof of the decision to invest in the future and in modern management.

And now I'm going to tell you something that might surprise you and what makes this place absolutely special. We often think that historical monuments are just dead objects that are meant to be searched, closed and their time is long over. The water plant in Litni is completely different. It's a functional technical monument. This means that even if this object is built in 1894, it still performs its original task. It's an incredible story of continuity. Even today, for over a century, this station still works and still serves to supply most houses in the village of Liteň with drinking water. While the world around us has changed, technology has moved on by huge steps and people have started using completely different ways to get water, but this station remains a key point for the lives of local people. It's rare to see such a connection between the past and the present, where history is not only in books, but in every litre of water that flows into our houses.

This importance of the building was officially recognised in 2012 by being included in the central list of cultural monuments. Since then, it has become an increasingly important point for all who want to learn more about the history of this region. In 2013 it became one of the important stops on the learning path Liteň so that it could be accessible to you and all interested in technical history.

Now that you've learned the basics of this place and understood its meaning, I suggest you continue along the educational path. This waterworks is just one of many stops that offer you a view of the rich history of this region. Take a look at the surroundings, feel the calm and try to visualize in your mind how it was here over a century ago when the power of steam was ruled here. Thank you for taking part in the water station Liteň and for your time. We wish you a wonderful journey and many other interesting experiences in your next survey of this beautiful place. We'll say goodbye and wish you a pleasant rest of the day.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during the sunny days of spring or autumn, when the surrounding greenery or autumn colors beautifully complement the historical architecture of the building. The light is softer in these periods and better depicts the details of the technical monument. To arrive in the village Liteň you can use your own car or public transport, always check the connection in the current timetable search engine. Take with you quality shoes for walking around and the camera, as the building with a characteristic tower offers interesting compositions for lovers of technical constructions. Photography of the exterior is most suitable in the morning when the sun lights up the main façade of the waterworks. In the nearby area we recommend to visit the Mramor hill with waterjem, from where there is a nice view of the landscape, or to walk around the village Liteň and adjacent parts such as Bělek and Lower Vlenek. For families with children, the location is ideal for easy walks in nature, which can be combined with exploring local history and technical attractions.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the surroundings of the water plant awaken to life and the first trees flourish. Nature around the building is fresh and light acts gently. I recommend moisture-resistant shoes and a visit in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

The summer season brings rich green vegetation and sharp sun, which highlights the details of the facade. The atmosphere is hot and calm. Light clothes are suitable and I recommend you come to the sunset to make it more comfortable.

In autumn, the landscape is wrapped in golden and red colours, while morning fog gives the place mystery. The light is soft and warm. It is advisable to dress in several layers and choose the time around noon.

In winter, the construction works more closely, especially if it is covered by snow and frost. The lighting is cold and the days are short. Don't forget the warm coat and gloves, the perfect time for outside observation is around noon when the sun shines.
