Vodní mlýn čp. 297 Water mill

The former Water Mill No. 297 in Roudnice nad Labem is a cultural monument with a rich history and architectural heritage. Located on the left bank of the Elbe directly in the historical center of Roudnice nad Labem, district of Litoměřice, Ústecký region. This building is part of the urban monument zone announced on September 10, 1992 and is characterized as a valuable baroque mill with richly decorated facades, which significantly enriches the urban structure of the laban waterfront. It is important to note that the current building is a replica of the original baroque mill that was destroyed after the Great Flood in 1890.

The first mention of the existence of a mill on the left of the Elbe bank appears in the town urbary in 1592. The mill probably belonged to the mill, which was located on the island on the opposite bank of the Elbe shoulder. The mill included two mills with different number of flour wheels and was required for grinding grain for 513 inhabitants from surrounding villages and settlements. In the 17th century, construction modifications were planned for the courses and the roudní bridge, but due to the invasion of Saxon troops in the Czech Republic these works were not completed, which led to the decadence of the construction by the river. The old lakes were only demolished in 1737.

In 1738 a new chapter began in the development of the mill with the laying of the base stone for the Baroque construction, led by the Polir Václav Škoda and the Prague miller Jakub Lískovec. The construction was completed in 1744 and the mill was delivered to the administration of the miller Jakub Lisková. After several changes to the owners, including Jan Kubík, who bought the mill in 1843, a saw was added to the mill. In 1890 the great flood destroyed the original building and the building was subsequently demolished in 1892. Between 1906- 1910 the construction of a new bridge took place over the Elbe during which a copy of it was built at the site of the original mill.

Architecturally, the restored building of the former Baroque mill is a decked-out brick storey building with rich stucco decoration in the style of late Baroque and Art Nouveau elements from the beginning of the 20th century. The facades are divided areas with volute shields that give the construction a distinct character. The roof is saddled and covered with bags, while the cellars under the building are arched.

Today the mill no. 297 is the property of the Czech Republic in the administration of the state enterprise Povodí Elbe and represents an important part of the local monument zone. Its history and architecture make this object an interesting destination for visitors interested in the cultural heritage Roudnice nad Labem.
