Vysoký Újezd Chateau
The chateau Vysoký Újezd, located in the district of Beroun in the Central Bohemian Region, is a historical building from 1897. Originally there was an older fortress, which was gradually rebuilt to its present form. The chateau and its surroundings, including the park and farm buildings, are protected as a cultural monument.
Since 1409, the village of Vysoký Újezd belonged to Strahov monastery. The monastery stopped her from Rousa from Hrashichek and after that ownership was handed over to other descendants who held her until 1454. In 1581 the property was transferred to Jakub Berk from Kunvald, who probably founded a fortress here, first mentioned in the documents in 1598. Fortress and village bought Jiřík Pichl z Pichlperka in Chrustenice.
In 1616 Rudolf Pichl sold the farm to Johanna Kateřina of Skuhrov, who in 1622 gave it to the board of appeals of Jan Mencl from Kolsdorf. The subsequent owner was Daniel Nečanský z Minic. In 1682, Marie Markéta Slavatová z Trautsonu bought a debtor farm, and in 1693 the Count of František Josef Šlik acquired it. The Count has rebuilt the fort into a chateau with the chapel of St. John. The chateau belonged to the family Šlik until 1763, after which the owners often changed.
The current appearance of the chateau is the work of modifications from 1897 in the neo-Renaissance style. The main building has an irregular ground plan with a shield facade facing the baits and a massive risalite with a main entrance on the side of the yard. The east side of the building is decorated with a tower ending with a lantern. The facade is decorated with elements of historism, such as skylights and profiled champagne around the windows.
The interior of the chateau, according to Augustus Sedláček's records, contained a hall, a skylight, a pantry, a horseman, a granary and a kitchen with a vaulted vault. The first floor was a corridor with five saints and a large hall, while there were two small rooms in the attic. The monument-protected area includes a pillar gazebo near the south facade, a house of saffron, a park and a fenced wall with three gates and historical bars. The farm yard is complemented by a barn, a barn and a granary with a fridge.
In the second half of the 20th century the chateau was used by the United Agricultural Cooperative of Czechoslovak-Soviet Friendship Morina, which had offices, apartments and dining room. During the years 2018- 2020, the building was rebuilt into a hotel.
The chateau Vysoký Újezd is an important monument to regional historism and illustrates the transformation of a noble residence into a farm yard and now a modern hotel. It is an ideal destination for visitors interested in the architecture of the late 19th century.

The Vysoký Újezd castle stands in the village of the same name in the Beroun region. It originated in the eighteenth century through the reconstruction of an older fortified manor house. Its present-day Neo-Renaissance appearance, however, is the result of modifications from 1897. The castle, together with its farm buildings and adjoining park, is protected as a cultural monument.
From 1409 onwards, the village belonged to the Strahov monastery. The monastery pawned it to Rouse of Hřešihlav, and his descendants held it until 1454. Later, the monastery redeemed the village from pawn and sold it in 1581 to Jakub Berk of Kunvald. He was most likely the founder of the local fortified manor house. It is first mentioned in 1598, when the supreme court postmaster Jiřík Pichl of Pichlperk bought it together with the village and the manor. His son Rudolf sold the estate in 1616 to Johana Kateřina of Skuhrov. In 1622 it passed to Jan Mencl of Kolsdorf, and then to Daniel Nečanský of Manic. In 1682, Marie Markéta Slavatová of Trautson purchased the debt-laden estate.
In 1693, the Count František Josef Šlik acquired Vysoký Újezd. The Šliks soon rebuilt the old fortified manor into a castle, near which there used to be a chapel of Saint John. The castle belonged to them until 1763, and after that the owners changed frequently. One of them had the building modified in 1897 in the Neo-Renaissance style. In the second half of the twentieth century, a local agricultural cooperative used the building. It housed offices, apartments, and a dining hall. Between 2018 and 2020, the castle underwent a complete reconstruction and was converted into a hotel.
The main building is elongated and has an irregular floor plan. It faces the courtyard with a gabled façade. A massive risalit with the main entrance projects into the yard. On the east side stands a tower topped with a lantern. According to historian August Sedláček, the ground floor used to contain a hall, a living room, a kitchen with a barrel vault, a pantry, a stable, and a granary. The first floor was connected by a corridor, from which one could enter five living rooms and a large hall. In the attic there were two small living rooms. The decorative elements of the façade come from the Neo-Renaissance reconstruction. They include dormers, richly profiled eaves, a string course, and profiled frames around the windows.
The protected area also includes a columned pavilion at the south façade and farm buildings around the yard. These include a granary with an ice house, a barn, and cattle sheds. Further included are the bailiff's house, the park, and a boundary wall with three gates, which retain historicizing grilles.
Tips for visitors
The best time to visit is the late spring or autumn months, when the romantic architecture of the chateau contrasts beautifully with the colors of nature. Thanks to the Neo-Renaissance elements, the construction is most atmospheric during this period.
When visiting, we recommend to wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking around the premises. The best places for photo lovers are the facade details and general view of the construction behind the so-called golden hour, when the light best highlights architectural details.
For families with children, the chateau space offers the possibility of familiarizing with the history of noble families in a pleasant environment. Since there are no other specific attractions in the immediate vicinity, we recommend focusing on the survey of the site itself.
