Duchcov Castle, located in Duchcov town within Ústecký kraj, is a significant cultural monument with origins dating back to the late medieval period. Initially constructed as a Gothic fortress by the Hrabišic family in the 13th century, it has undergone several transformations over the centuries, evolving into Renaissance and later Baroque styles. The chateau's rich history of ownership includes prominent Czech noble families such as the Lobkovic and Valdštejn, making it an important cultural site today. Currently, Duchcov Castle serves cultural purposes and is open to visitors, housing a museum with historic furniture collections, including the Waldstein family’s painting and portrait gallery.

The castle's architectural journey began in the 13th century as a fortification built by the Hrabišic family. By 1527, the Lobkowicz family replaced this early structure with a one-wing Renaissance palace. The transformation into its current form was significantly influenced by Jan Bedřich of Waldstein, who commissioned French architect Jean Baptiste Mathey to redesign it in the Baroque style during the late 17th century. This period marked the introduction of elaborate frescoes and sculptures by renowned Bohemian artists such as Matthias Braun, Ferdinand Brokoff, and Wenzel Lorenz Reiner, enhancing its grandeur.

Ownership of Duchcov Castle has seen a series of notable transitions through history. Initially under the Hrabišic family, it was later acquired by Václav Popel z Lobkovic in 1527, who initiated its Renaissance reconstruction. The castle came into the possession of the Waldstein family when Marie Polyxena of Thalmberg married Maximillian of Waldstein in 1642. Jan Bedřich of Waldstein played a pivotal role in its Baroque transformation starting in 1675. The castle remained within the Waldstein family until it was nationalized in 1945, after which it became state-owned.

Throughout its history, Duchcov Castle has been associated with several key events and personalities. Notably, Giacomo Casanova spent his final thirteen years at the chateau from 1785 to 1798 as a librarian, during which he penned his memoirs, "Histoire de ma vie." The castle also houses a unique collection of Baroque art in its chapel and features frescoes by Václav Vavřinec Reiner in the grand hall.

Today, Duchcov Castle stands as a protected national cultural monument since 2002. It is open to visitors who can explore its museum collections, including historic furniture and portraits of notable figures such as Albrecht von Wallenstein by Anthony van Dyck. The surrounding garden grounds serve as a public park, adding to the site's appeal for both history enthusiasts and casual tourists.
