Jan Bedřich of Waldstein played a pivotal role in its Baroque transformation starting in 1675. The castle remained within the Waldstein family until it was nationalized in 1945, after which it became state-owned.

Notably, Giacomo Casanova spent his final thirteen years at the chateau from 1785 to 1798 as a librarian, during which he penned his memoirs, "Histoire de ma vie."
