Chateau Konopiště, a romantic residence in the district of Benešov, lies about two kilometres west of the city. It dominates the Castle Pond and is known primarily as the last residence of Archduke František Ferdinand d'Este, whose murder in Sarajevo provoked World War I in 1914. Today the site is a national cultural monument and the administrator is the National Heritage Institute.

The original chateau was probably built here at the end of the thirteenth century, perhaps around 1294. The Prague Bishop Tobias of Benešova is listed as his founder, but the exact dates and original owners remain unclear. The first written mention of the chateau dates back to 1318, when it was owned by Beneš and Dobé from the Benešovic family. They lived here only until 1327, when they were replaced by gentlemen from Sternberg. The sternbergs stayed here until 1590 and left a significant mark. The most significant of them was Zdeněk of Šternberk, who in 1440-1468 led the resistance Union of the Greens against King George of Poděbrad. Konopiště, during this conflict, gave up not by force but by starving the crew in December 1468. The children of Zdeněk won the chateau back in 1479.

In the seventeenth century, Bernard Hodějovský of Hodìjov became the owner, who bought the chateau in 1603 for 110 thousand gallons of Míšenský groves. Hodějovský was involved in the anti-Habsburg uprising and Fridrich Falcký was briefly present at the chateau. After the defeat of the uprising the chateau fell to imperial supporters and in 1623 Albrecht of Valdštejn bought it. Later, Pavel Michna of Vacinov bought it, then owned it by other important families such as Vrtb and Lobkovice.

In 1887 the archduke František Ferdinand d'Este bought the chateau with the entire estate from Lobkovice. He introduced modern equipment, such as water supply, electricity and hydraulic lift. In 1889- 1914 he had the chateau rebuilt in the style of romantic historism. Architect František Schmoranz combined Gothic elements with neo-gothic details. The chateau was built mainly of stone and bricks, with richly decorated interiors and exteriors. The area includes an extensive park with over a hundred statues that symbolize historical and mythological figures according to the design of František Ferdinand.

The Konopiště Chateau is unique in its architectural development. The original Gothic chateau has undergone various modifications, from Renaissance and Baroque elements to romantic reconstruction for František Ferdinand. Today the site is protected as a national cultural monument and represents a rare example of a preserved noble residence with a rich history.

By the murder of Archduke František Ferdinand in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914, Konopiště became a symbol of the event that triggered World War I. After the war, the property of the Habsburgs was confiscated and the chateau was used as a barracks, school or warehouse. Only in 1992 was it handed over to the National Heritage Institute.

Today the chateau is open to the public. Visitors can explore its history and architecture, park with rich sculpture decoration, hunting grounds and economic buildings. Chateau pond, originally a defensive element, still surrounds the area and contributes to its romantic atmosphere. Konopiště is also the starting point for visiting nearby monuments such as Castle Český Šternberk or Nature Reserve Kokořín - Mách Region.

The chateau is worth visiting for its historical value as well as as as an example of the connection of the medieval fortress with the romantic reconstruction of the nineteenth century. Its premises offer the opportunity to know not only the architecture but also the life of the important personalities who lived there. Konopiště thus reflects key events of Czech and European history.

Welcome to the Konopiště Castle Complex! You are standing in front of one of the most romantic and interesting settlements in our country, which connects the medieval hradic past with a wonderful reconstruction at the end of the nineteenth century. In front of you is a massive building whose silhouette rises above the surrounding landscape as a witness to centuries of history. Notice how the chateau winds up around steep slopes, surrounded by a large park, where between trees and shrub statues and monuments. This space will invite you to the journey of time - from the medieval chateau to the seat of the archduke whose fate has changed the course of Europe.

Let us return to the year thirteen hundred eighteen, when it is first written about chateau Konopiště in connection with Beneš and Dobeš from Benešovic. This chateau, probably built at the end of the 13th century by someone named Tobias from Benešova, served as guardian of the surrounding lands. But his fate changed significantly in the 25th century when George of Poděbrad, after 18 months of siege, forced him to submit. Later, in the year six hundred and three, the chateau was purchased by Bernard Hodìjovský of Hodìjov, who became one of the leaders of the anti-Habsburg resistance. His daughter Dorota sold the chateau for a huge sum - a hundred and ten thousand Mishenian groches - and so the owners took turns until the archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este won the chateau.

In eight hundred and eighty-seven he became the last owner of Konopiště and decided to rebuild it in the spirit of romantic historism. The work you see in front of you in the chateau has been going on since eight hundred and eighty-nine until nineteen and fourteen. The architect František Schmoranz created a representative residence from the original chateau to reflect the wealth and power of his owner. Note how the chateau consists of different parts - main wings, towers and economic buildings that are harmonically connected to the whole. The facade is decorated with tasteful details that refer to medieval patterns, but also have features of newer styles. Now pay attention to the surroundings - the park surrounding the chateau is full of statues, gazebo and picturesque paths that guide you through nature and history.

One of the most important men associated with Konopištěm was František Ferdinand d'Este. As a successor to the Austrian-Hungarian throne, he lived here with his wife Sophie Chotko and their children. The chateau was his last home until the day of August 20, nineteen hundred and fourteen, when he was murdered in Sarajevo. This event not only ended his life, but it also became a significant trigger for the First World War. Konopiště thus bears not only the beauty of architecture on its walls, but also the weight of historical events that have affected the world.

Let's look at some of the secrets of this place. Do you know that the chateau was originally a Gothic chateau, but its current form is the result of a large rebuilding? Some of the original parts have been preserved - for example, cellars or some walls. The area is today protected as a national cultural monument and managed by the National Heritage Institute. When you take a walk, notice how nature and art mix here - statues that revive the park or picturesque views of the surrounding landscape.

Before you is a place where history touches the present. The Konopiště Chateau is not only a collection of buildings, but a living testimony of the people who lived here ruled and dreamed. If you haven't walked his halls yet, seen the interiors or admired the park, I suggest you do so. Every step will reveal to you another layer of the stories that this place carries.

Whether you choose to stay in front of the chateau gates or go into the chateau gates, I hope that you have taken the impression not only of its beauty, but also of how much one place can affect all this time. Thank you for joining us on this journey. Have a nice day and enjoy Konopiště as much as we do. Goodbye!

The ideal time for visiting is from April to May, when the weather is more stable and temperatures are around a pleasant 15 degrees. It is recommended to visit the chateau early in the morning or in the afternoon to avoid more tourists coming here mainly on weekends. Clothes should be light, but with the possibility of covering - spring weather can be variable, and it is still cold in the morning. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes because walking through gardens and park paths are long.

Summer In the summer months zámek Konopiště attracts visitors with its sunny lighting and lively colours, when the whole area turns into a pleasant place for walking. The warm sun and longer daylight create a pleasant atmosphere, but also attract more tourists, especially in the main summer season from June to August. It is recommended to come as soon as possible, ideally before 9:00 in the morning to avoid crowds and long queues to enter. Clothes should be light and airy, with sun protection - hat, sunglasses and cream with high protection factor are essential. All parts of the chateau, including gardens and greenhouses, are also open during the summer months, so it is possible to explore the whole area. Don't forget to take enough water, because on hot days the feeling of heat may be higher than the actual temperature.

Autumn Autumn at chateau Konopiště brings a unique atmosphere where nature turns into golden and red shades. Trees in the park dress up in spring colours, while the sun shines lower on the horizon and creates long shadows that give the whole area a mysterious and calm mood. The temperatures are falling, but the weather is still pleasant, especially in September and October, when there are fewer tourists than in summer. It is recommended to visit the chateau in the morning when the light is the most beautiful and the crowd is minimal. Clothes should be layered - it is cold in the morning, but it can still be pleasantly warm at noon. Walks on forest roads and gardens are especially picturesque at this time, but it is necessary to count on the possibility of rain, so wear a waterproof jacket. The opening time of the chateau is shorter in November, but the park remains accessible.

The white blanket highlights ancient stone walls and tall trees, while the sun, which shines lower on the horizon, creates magical light effects. The temperatures are low, often below zero, and the weather is often cloudy, but it is this environment that gives the chateau a mysterious and calm mood. It is recommended to visit the chateau at advent time when the opening time is longer and the area is illuminated by lighting, which creates a pleasant atmosphere even in dark evening hours. Clothes should be warm and waterproof - strong frost, wind and snow are common in winter. It is also recommended to visit the chateau in the morning when the light is the most beautiful and the crowd is the minimum. Less parts of the chateau are open in winter, but the park and gardens remain accessible and offer beautiful views.
