Zámek Nemilkov Chateau

Nemilkov Chateau is an enchanting Renaissance chateau located in Nemilkov, part of Velhartice municipality in Plzeňský kraj, Czech Republic. Situated about 20 km south of Klatovy and 2 km west of Velhartice along the Ostružná River's left bank, this historical monument showcases centuries of architectural evolution and cultural significance. Declared a protected cultural landmark in 1964, Nemilkov Chateau is privately owned but open to the public, offering insights into its rich history.

The chateau dates back to the late Middle Ages, first mentioned as a manor fortification in 1382 when Ctibor Loveček died there and Pešík z Nemilkova claimed his estate. Its transformation into a Renaissance structure began in the mid-16th century under Jan Bohuchval z Hrádku, who renovated it from a simple manor to an elaborate residence. This period marked significant architectural changes that defined its character for centuries.

Architecturally, Nemilkov Chateau features a complex layout with four unequal rectangular wings arranged in a cruciform plan. It blends Renaissance and later classical influences. The oldest sections are the southwest and central parts, retaining original Renaissance masonry adorned with sgrafitto decorations discovered during 1942 renovations. A notable addition is the classical wing built around 1847, featuring ground-floor operational spaces and upper-level guest rooms. This evolution reflects diverse ownership and stylistic preferences over time.

Throughout its history, Nemilkov Chateau has seen various owners who left their mark on its development. After Jan Bohuchval z Hrádku's renovations in the 16th century, it passed through several hands, including Jan Czernin z Chudenic and Petr Suda Lukavský z Řenče. Post-White Mountain Defeat, Martin de Hoeff-Huerta acquired it after confiscation. The Schreiner family bought the chateau around 1800 or 1802, maintaining ownership until 1945, during which they added a classical wing with guest rooms. In recent history, families Kaplanová and Hagerová became owners in 2016, initiating restoration efforts to make it accessible to visitors.

Key events include its transformation from a manor fortification into a Renaissance residence and subsequent architectural enhancements. The year 1798 is significant as the Schreiner family arrived, inscribed on the entrance portal. Another notable feature is the stone fountain in the courtyard, dating back to 1849, adorned with a shell motif and spouts.

Today, Nemilkov Chateau stands as a well-preserved example of Renaissance architecture, open for public exploration. Its historical significance, coupled with its picturesque setting by the Ostružná River, makes it an attractive destination for those interested in Czech history and architectural heritage.
