Židovský hřbitov v Kovanicích is a protected cultural monument founded in 1830. Served Jewish communities in Kovanice and surrounding cities. The site has preserved its original floor plan and is particularly significant thanks to preserved tombstones and related to Franz Kafka's family.

The cemetery was founded in 1830, at the time of the promotion of Classicism in Europe and the reform of Jewish Enlightenment in the Austrian Empire. In this period, Jewish communities developed in smaller cities and municipalities in the Czech Republic, which was also reflected in Kovanice.

The area is located on the southwest edge of the village and is accessible from the road leading around the agricultural building. It has the shape of an irregular trapezoid of less than 1500 m ². This plan remained original and the area was never expanded. There was originally a ceremonial hall at the point of entry which was no longer preserved. There is a house no. 97 in the premises, which served as a grave man's residence; a hearse was garaged in his eastern part.

Since 1995 the cemetery has been under the care of the Jewish village in Prague. There were regular funerals until the 1940s. After 1945, however, the number of ceremonies decreased significantly and only a few were left.

247 tombstones were preserved in the cemetery, the oldest of which dates back to 1833. In the western part there is a children's ward with a tombstone decorated with an angel's head. Among those buried here is the grandmother of the writer Franz Kafka. There is a memorial plaque dedicated to the victims of World War II at the entrance. The Jewish trail is visible in the village and outside the cemetery: house no. 91 served as a Jewish school, house no. 111 was a synagogue and a number of other buildings in the surroundings, such as 20, 43, 85, 89 or 95, belonged to Jewish families.

At present, reconstruction and maintenance work is being carried out on the premises, in particular repairs of the surrounding wall and stacking of tombstones. The cemetery gate remains locked, but the visit is possible after prior agreement with the municipal office.

Židovský hřbitov v Kovanicích is a valuable document about Jewish communities in the Czech countryside. It is a place of peace and history that is worth visiting every interested person in the Jewish heritage.

Welcome to the place where the echoes of the past meet the quiet calm of the present. You're standing in front of a gateway to history that is deeply rooted in Kovanic soil. Before your eyes, there is a Jewish cemetery, a space that is not just a plot with tombstones, but a living witness to the fate of people who once lived here, believed and went to eternity. Feel this atmosphere of humility and peace, which immediately surrounds you. If you look around now, notice the unusual shape of this area. Unlike many other cemeteries which are regularly square or rectangular, this space has a floor plan of an irregular trapezoid. It's an organic shape, how it would adapt to the outside world. The total area is relatively modest, less than five square meters, and it is this compactness that gives the place a sense of intimacy and closure.

Let us now return together in time and understand why this place was created. Imagine the year one thousand eight hundred thirty. That's the year this cemetery was officially founded. It was not intended only for the inhabitants of Kovanice. At that time, the Jewish community in this region was very connected and this cemetery served as a last resort for people from many surrounding cities. Now, when you introduce yourself in those times, you can imagine passengers arriving from Nymburk, Poděbrad or Krínka to find peace for their loved ones. This space was therefore a central point for the whole wider area, connecting different families and fates under one common faith and tradition.

Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you, those stone monuments that form the backbone of this place. Take a closer look, if you're allowed to. Two hundred and forty-seven tombstones were preserved here. Each of them is a unique story carved into stone. Note how their appearance and condition may differ. Some of them are more years of erosion, others still retain their faces. If you look at the oldest pieces, you'll find monuments that come from a thousand eight hundred thirty-three. It's fascinating to realize that these stone plates have been standing here for almost two centuries. There's also something very special that you might notice while observing the perimeter boundaries. This cemetery has never expanded in its entire history. His plan remained true to his original intention, which creates the feeling that you are moving in a space that is preserved in time in constant, unchanged form.

When you walk between these tombstones, you might wonder who were the people who were resting here. Among them are personalities who may not be known to every visitor at first sight, but their names are important in the broader context of history. One of the most important names associated with this place is the grandmother of the famous writer Franz Kafka. It is a fascinating idea that right here, in this quiet and inconspicuous corner of Kovanic, the history of one particular family is linked to the worldwide heritage of modern literature. This bond gives the place depth and reminds us that even the smallest places can have ties to the greatest stories of mankind.

But there is another interesting thing that might interest you. You may think you're looking at a simple, old cemetery, but you're actually in a protected cultural monument. That means that every part of this compound, every tombstone and every trace of history has legal protection. This care of the cemetery is not a matter of course. Since the year one thousand nine hundred and ninety-five the Jewish village in Prague has taken care of this area. Thanks to their work and efforts, it is possible to stand here today and perceive this history as vividly as we see it right now. It is proof of continuity and respect for those who are no longer among us, but their legacy remains for future generations.

Now I won't keep you any longer. I suggest you continue your slow and thoughtful walk. Look at the individual tombstones, try to find the oldest and perceive the silence that exists here. Let yourself drift through the atmosphere of this place and perhaps even your own thoughts of time and memory. This cemetery offers you space for reflection and peaceful observation. Thank you for spending this moment right here with us. I wish you another pleasant and inspiring tour of this important place.
