Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (from A.M.U.) is among the most important educational institutions in the field of art in the Czech Republic. In the long term, it retains the position of the country's largest art university and was founded in October 1945 by the presidential establishment decree immediately after the end of World War II.

The philosophy of education at AMU is based primarily on the individual development of talent and the personality of students. It is characteristic that teaching usually takes place in small study groups. At the Faculty of Music and Dance, instrumental disciplines are even taught strictly individually. The ratio between academic staff and students is on average 1: 6, which allows for quality and personalized teaching.

The Academy consists of three faculties. The Film and Television Faculty (FAMU) is one of the oldest film schools in Europe with an essential place in the history of Czechoslovak cinema. In the 1960s, it was abandoned by young artists who later created the Czech new wave - a film direction that became one of the greatest benefits of Czechoslovak cinema to the world and brought Czechoslovakia, among other things, two Oscars for the best foreign films. Today, FAMU is on the prestigious list of the top 15 international film schools published every year by The Hollywood Reporter.

The Theatre Faculty (DAMU) offers a comprehensive study of all fields of theatre production: acting, director, dramaturgy, scenography, theory and criticism, theatre production and dramatic education. Faculty graduates are applied in professional and independent theatre groups such as actors, directors, producers and teachers.

In addition to three faculties, AMU also manages the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (GAMU), its own publishing house (NAMU), DISK Theatre and Studio FAMU. The institution also includes rail and accommodation facilities for students.

The Academy has long developed international cooperation. He is a member of prestigious organisations such as the European University Association (EUA), the European League of Institutions of the Arts (ELIA) and the European Association for International Education (EAIE). He is actively involved in Erasmus + and has more than 200 partner agreements with schools worldwide. It also offers study programmes in English, including bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.

Visiting the Academy of Performing Arts provides an interesting view of the place where Czech artistic talents are born. The institution represents a dignified continuation of the Czechoslovak tradition of culture and art from the second half of the 20th century.
