Barokní statek Doksany Monastery

The monastery Doksany, located in the picturesque village Doksany on the banks of the river Ohře in the district Litoměřice, Ústecký kraj, is the oldest premonstrate monastery in the countries of the Czech Crown. This historical complex boasts a rich tradition and Baroque architecture. Founded around 1144 by Czech priestess Gertrude Babenberg, he went through many periods of construction and reconstruction, especially after fires and damage caused by Hussite storms and a 30-year war. Since the end of the 17th century, the original Romanesque Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary has been significantly developed and baroque, which has contributed to its present appearance.

The foundation of the monastery Doksany was an initiative of the Czech priestess Gertrude Babenberg, daughter of Austrian Margrave Leopold III and wife of later the second Czech prince, Vladislav II. The monastery was built in places of important ford across the Ohře River, highlighting its strategic and historical value. Originally the Romanesque church went through several stages of construction, especially after the fires in 1200 and during the Hussite storms. The monastery also suffered damage in the Thirty Years' War.

The architecture of the monastery Doksany is characterized by a mixture of Romanesque and Baroque elements, reflecting its long history. After the abrogation of the monastery in 1782 for the Josephine reforms, the complex was transformed into a castle with the economic court. This late baroque economic court, composed of two axially symmetrical storey houses with volute shields and inserted wall gate between the houses, represents an architectural treasure of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The property of the monastery has undergone several changes. After the cancellation in 1782 he transferred to the property of the Czech State, which reflects the broader historical context of the Josephine reforms. Today, part of the monastery is owned by the Royal Canon of Premonstrats in Strahov and manages the National Heritage Institute.
