Česká polytechnika, located on Charles Square 13 in the village Nové Město Praha 2, is a non-Renaissance building with rich history and architectural significance. It was created in 1871-1875 according to the design by architect Ignác Ullmann as a new residence for Czech Polytechnic, which later moved into the hands of ČVUT. This building is not only an architectural dominant of Charles Square, but also an important place for Czech technical education. Since 1958 it has been protected as a cultural monument and part of the Prague Heritage Reserve, which is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The history of Czech Polytechnics dates back to 1866, when the Regional Committee of the Kingdom of Bohemia purchased the land of the former Dezraz monastery for the construction of a new school. After the introduction of bilingual teaching in the school year 1860-1861, an architectural competition was announced, won by Ignác Ullmann. His design led to the reconstruction of existing houses in the western front of Charles Square into a new building for polytechnic applications. The original project was reduced due to financial constraints, but still preserved the representative facade facing Charles Square.

The building is an example of the Neo-Renaissance style of the second half of the 19th century. Its symmetrical facade with a distinctive central risalite and rich sculpture decoration makes it unique. In 1879 ten geniuses of technical sciences from Josef Václav Mysbek were placed in the street facade and in 1894 the statues of Allegorie of science and work from Antonín Poppa were added. The interior boasts original artistic craft elements such as monumental vestibule with three-arm staircase carried by Tuscan pillars and columns.

The building underwent several building modifications in 1923, 1937, 1955 and 1958. During the years 1979- 1985, the ground floor for entering the B train station was demolished when building Prague metro. Despite these changes, the building retained its historical and architectural significance.

Today Česká polytechnika is not only a monument, but also an active part of Prague's life. Its rich history and architecture make it an ideal place to visit. Explore its interior with original artistic craft elements and appreciate the sculptures works of Mymebek and Poppa is really a valuable experience. This building not only testifies to the historical development of Czech technical education, but also represents the architectural pearl of Prague, which is worth a visit.

Welcome to the heart of Prague's New Town, one of the largest and most important squares of our capital city. Right now, you're standing in front of a building that, in its size and appearance, completely controls the space around it. It is a building that carries the spirit of science, progress and pride of Czech intelligence from the nineteenth century. In front of you is the former Česká polytechnika, a building that, as part of the Czech Technical University today, still fulfils its Urspringg role and educates new generations of engineers and scientists. The first impression it gives is a sense of stability, order and intellectual power. Feel its power and the way it is inserted into the panorama of Charles Square.

Let us now go back more than 150 years in time to understand why this building was created and what it meant to society at that time. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Czech society experienced a period of national renewal and a strong expansion of industry. It was necessary to have a place where technical sciences could be taught at the highest level so that Czech experts did not have to seek education abroad. It was during this vision that this building was built between 1871 and 1875. Its creator was the renowned architect Ignác Ullmann. Ullmann wasn't just a builder, he was a visionary who wanted the school to be more than just a set of classrooms. It was supposed to make it an architectural dominant that would proudly represent Czech technical education. This building was supposed to be a symbol of the fact that the Czech people were able to master modern technology and science and that their education stood on solid foundations.

Now pay attention to the appearance of the building itself. If you look at its overall design, you'll notice it's a neoRenaissance building. Neo-Renaissance was a very popular style at the time because it followed the golden age of the Renaissance, which was connected to the bloom of human thought, art and discovery. Architect Ignác Ullmann used this style very cleverly to give dignity to the building while connecting it with the tradition of European education. Look at the facade and feel the rhythm of the windows and the wall layout. Everything here is balanced and harmonious, which is supposed to reflect the logic and accuracy that are so crucial in technical sciences.

Now, if you look closer at the details that decorate the building, you'll find real art treasures. The architecture works closely with sculpture. Look up at the sculptures that decorate the facade. In 1879 there were ten sculptures of the Genii of Technical Sciences. The author of these remarkable works was famous sculptor Josef Václav Myslbek. Imagine what it meant back then. The geniuses in art are the personification of spiritual forces, guardians of knowledge. The mind thus expressed with its sculptures that technical science is not only about engineering and calculations, but that it is the result of higher human creativity and intellect. Each of these figures represents a different area of knowledge, which basically tells the story of the entire spectrum of human knowledge in the field of technology.

But that's not all. Let's focus on other details that were added to the building a little later. In 1894 the sculptures created by Antonín Popp were supplemented. They're allegories of science and work. Stop by and think about their meaning. Science and work are two sides of the same coin. Science without work remains a theory on paper, while work without science lacks direction and efficiency. By decorating the school building, the authors tell us that the goal of education is to combine deep theoretical knowledge with practical skills and hard work. It is a message that is still valid to this day and which still accompanies students who enter these premises every day.

It is fascinating to realize how strongly names like Ignác Ullmann, Josef Václav Myslbek and Antonín Popp are associated with this place. They were people who together created a work that went beyond school. They created a monument that combines architecture and plastics into one whole. This building was not just a teaching site, it was also a declaration of national identity. At a time when Czech experts were trying to assert themselves within a wider European context, this construction was tangible proof of their ambitions and abilities.

Maybe you're wondering how the building evolved in the next decades. As I mentioned, the original Česká polytechnika has gradually become part of what we now know as Czech Technical University in Prague. The building remained faithful to its mission. The interesting fact is that since 1958 the entire building has been protected as a cultural monument. This means that the State recognised its exceptional value not only for education but also for the overall heritage of Czech architecture and art. It is a recognition that the Neo-Renaissance style of Ignatius Ullmann and the sculptures work of Mybek and Poppa are an integral part of Prague's identity.

If you stand in front of this building today, you may feel a certain mystery. Imagine thousands of students walking through here over the last hundred years. How many brilliant ideas were born in these halls? How many hours of hard work and studies have been spent here? This building is a silent witness to the transformation of the entire city and the entire state. She saw the boom of the industrial revolution, two world wars and changes in political regimes, yet she maintained her dignity and purpose. It's a place where history meets the future.

Now I invite you to slowly rise from the front and try to perceive the building from different angles. Walk around it, look again at those ten Genii of Technical Sciences and see if you can find the details you missed at first glance. Feel the atmosphere of Charles Square, which surrounds this architectural dominance. Let yourself be consumed by the feeling that you are standing in front of a building designed to inspire anyone who looks at it.

I hope this short trip to history has helped you better understand the importance of this place. Česká polytechnika is not only a wall and stone, it is a materialized desire for knowledge and development. Thank you for accompanying me on this tour. Now it's up to you to explore the rest of the neighborhood at your own pace. I wish you a pleasant continuation in discovering the beauty and mystery of Prague. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit this Neo-Renaissance building is during the morning hours, when the sunlight ideally radiates a richly decorated facade towards the area of Charles Square.

Take with you a camera with wide-angle lens and comfortable shoes to discover the interior space of this important architectural dominant designed by architect Ignatius Ullmann.

For photography we recommend to capture detailed elements of exterior and main entrance portal, the best lighting conditions are around noon, when the sun illuminates the entire building evenly.

Since there are no other specific tourist destinations in the background in the immediate vicinity, we recommend that you focus on the tour of the building itself and the surrounding historical area.

Themed route

As there are no surrounding locations in the assignment, I propose a thematic route within the historical building itself and its immediate premises.

1. Česká polytechnika (school building) - Type: Main destination, historical college building. - Why is it worth a visit: This exceptional construction represents the ultimate work of architecture associated with the development of technical education. Visitors can admire the magnificent entrance hall and richly decorated interiors for science and teaching.

2. Internal courtyard of polytechnic - Type: Area, area inside the building. - Why is it worth a visit: A quiet interblock offers a unique view of architectural details of facades and statues, which are common view from the street hidden. It is the ideal place to relax and perceive the genius loci of this academic place.

3. Historical auditorium - Type: Internal exposure, hall. - Why is it worth a visit: The original lecture hall breathes through the atmosphere of the past centuries and shows how the teaching of famous engineers took place. The site will be occupied by its preserved wooden benches and historical equipment.

4. Roof view polytechnic - Type: Outlook point on the premises. - Why is it worth visiting: The accessible part of the upper floor and roof area offers unusual views of the surrounding roofs and panorama of New Town. It provides great space for a detailed examination of the school's external architectural elements up close.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring on New It brings a growing nature to the city, where the surrounding trees at the historic building of technology begin to bloom and the sunlight pleasantly radiates brick and stone details of the facade. The air is fresh and the atmosphere is very academic and fresh, ideal for exploring architecture without excessive heat. During the spring months you will meet here rather smaller groups of people interested in history and students, so the main onslaught of tourists is yet to come. We recommend to wear a light laminated jacket and tight shoes for longer walks along the surrounding streets. The best time to visit and take nice photos is in the morning, when the city is still alive and the light hits the facade.

The summer will warm Prague's streets to the fullest, which means that there are a large number of tourists running around the school building towards discovery. The sun's rays fall perpendicular and create sharp shadows, which is why the atmosphere is very busy, full of energy and outdoor activity. Due to high temperatures and strong sun, it is necessary to bring with you a headgear, sunglasses and plenty of drinking water, while clothes should be as airy as possible. The best time for a tour is early in the morning, right after the opening, or in the late afternoon, when the sun no longer burns so much and the crowds on the streets become thin.

Autumn turns the entire Nové Město into a colorful gallery, where falling leaves create a coloured carpet under the feet of the incoming ones on the pavement. The lighting is soft and golden due to the low sun, which gives the whole building an extremely melancholy and noble character. During this period of calm year, the atmosphere encourages a deep discovery of architectural details and inner spaces. Practical advice is to put on a warmer coat, scarf and not forget the umbrella, because autumn weather is usually variable. The ideal time of day for visiting is around noon, when the outside is warmer and the fog from the morning has completely receded.

Winter covers the historical memory of silence, which sometimes only disturb the crunch of snow under the shoes or falling ice crystals. The lighting is very short, it soon gets dark and artificial lamps of street lighting create interesting reflections on icy sidewalks. The atmosphere is quiet, almost mysterious, underlined by the occasional Christmas rush in the wider surroundings. The tour requires a winter coat, gloves, hat and quality non-slip shoes, because the tiles can be dangerously frozen. The best time for arrival is around noon, when daylight reaches its maximum and temperatures are most favourable for outdoor movement.
