The townhouse on Přemysla Otakar II. No. 128 / 39 in České Budějovice is a protected cultural monument located in the town monument reservation. The building is characterised by a Gothic core and a gradual development involving Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist adaptations, while in the past it served as a customs office. This building excels with its two arcades and crest vaults and represents a valuable example of historical architecture in the city centre.

The house was built in a Gothic style. In the period of its oldest part, the Czech Kingdom developed dynamically during the last Přemyslovovci, when new royal cities, including České Budějovice, were founded. Later Renaissance and Baroque reconstruction falls into the era of urban architecture in Czech countries under the rule of the Habsburg monarchy.

The building design of the building has undergone many changes. The house has a gothic core and two arcades in the meadow, which is equipped with nail vaults. It was significantly rebuilt during the Renaissance. Partial baroque adjustments to the inner spaces and vaults took place between 1724 and 1735. At the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the classicist adjustment of the staircase carried out between 1779 and 1801 followed. After the fire in 1868, the facade of the house was modified. The current Renaissance appearance, including the decorative shield, came from a general reconstruction in the 1980s.

Over the centuries, a number of owners took turns in real estate and went through many transactions. In 1583, the house was sold for 680 kicks. In 1617, the emperor bought it for 1500 kicks. In 1623, the dilapidated object was sold to Elijah Preitenberg, who bought it for his son-in-law Simon Kostelecký for 1000 kicks. Later it replaced several other owners, between 1724 and 1735 Antonín Josef Barthleme z Bartenau and since 1779 city syndicate Karel Josef Hönig. In 1801, the house was sold for 6400 gold pieces.

Key events include the year 1617, when the monarch bought the house and set up a customs office in it, which continued to operate in the building after the sale in 1623. The Imperial Customs Office has been based here for many years, with the Office being documented already after 1617 and again since 1735. A significant milestone was the fire in 1668 and 1868, followed by the reconstruction of the facade and, above all, the total reconstruction in the 1980s, which gave the building its Renaissance appearance, including the decorative shield.

Today the house is located right on the square of Přemysla Otakar II in České Budějovice in the immediate vicinity of other historic townhouses and Samson fountain.

This building is an important example of historical building development and is worth a visit to the town conservation in České Budějovice.

Welcome to the heart of southern Bohemia, one of the most beautiful and spacious squares in our country. You are standing right now in front of a house with a descriptive number of one hundred and twenty-eight, whose facade and the whole resemblance bear centuries. Look before you at this historic place, which is a valuable protected cultural monument and forms an integral part of the monument reservation. Feel the unique atmosphere spread around this ancient square.

Let's look deeper into the past and explore how this building was created and changed in time. The house has a deep Gothic core, which means its oldest walls remember the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, he went through a gradual development, which left Renaissance, Baroque and also Classicist traces. Every time, every generation of people have put in a piece of their work and taste, and therefore today's form is the result of long and interesting historical development.

Now pay attention to the architectural details that are right in front of you. When you look down at the parterre of the house, notice the beautiful meadow with two arcades. Enter with your eyes under this peeling and look at the crest vaults, which are among the most important elements of the building. These vaults are an example of the masterwork of old builders. If you look up, the front of the house is spread out in front of you. This gained its present form in the nineteenth century, namely after the great fire that hit the city and this house in 18,000. The fire element destroyed part of the building at the time, but the owners did not leave the house to their fate and fixed it quickly, thereby preserving it for generations to come.

There are many interesting stories and fates of prominent personalities attached to this house. Over the centuries, many owners and residents have been replaced here. In fifteen hundred eighty three, the house was sold for six hundred eighty kicks, which was a very respectable amount at that time. An even more interesting chapter began to be written in sixteen hundred seventeen. Then the Emperor himself bought the house and set up a customs office in it. Imagine the excitement that existed here at the time when merchants came through here and paid for customs. Customs has been based here for many years and the house has served an important national purpose. Later, in 16 hundred and twenty-three, this house was sold to Elijah Preitenberger for his son-in-law Simon Kostel. Among the other persons associated with this place, let us also name Antonín Josef Barthleme of Bartenau or Karl Josef Hönig, who influenced the operation of this house with their work or life.

If we look at the chronology in more detail, we'll find that the building has undergone many changes. For example, in seventeen hundred twenty-four, partial baroque adjustments to the interior and vaults were launched, which were intended to adapt the interior to new fashion trends and housing and representation requirements. Each such intervention has moved the house a little further in its construction history.

Now stop for a moment and try to imagine the thousands of people standing in front of this house. Traders, artisans, imperial officials, people fleeing the fire, and those who, after the disaster, put him back on his feet. This house in Přemysl Otakar the Second is a silent witness to the history of the entire city.

We hope you enjoyed our stop today.
