House No. 67 in Hilbert Street in Louny is an important neo-Gothic townhouse from 1898, designed by architect Kamil Hilbert and later lived in the painter Zdeněk Sýkora. This one-storey building excels with rich ornamental decoration of the facade and since 1964 it has been registered on the state list of cultural monuments.

This object represents one of three neo-Gothic buildings by Kamil Hilbert in his hometown. It was completed in 1898 for the builder Antonín Hess, whose name and the name of the creator are carved on the facade. The creation of the property dates back to the end of the 19th century, which was marked in Czech countries by the highlight of history and the development of national awareness. This was an interest in Gothic and Renaissance. At this time the architect Kamil Hilbert gained experience, which soon gained interest in his most important realization, which was the completion of the Cathedral of St. Vitus in Prague completed in 1929. The architect's father, Petr Pavel Hilbert, was the mayor of the city and the street where the house is named after him.

The architectural representation of the building is carried in a pure neo-gothic style. The single-storey facade is dominated by the right-hand section of the rising bay, supported by a ruckus, for which the house is slightly moved from the street line. The windows are broken. Their lining on the ground floor ends with a sharp arch reminiscent of the portal of the Horseman Stairs in the eastern corridor of the Vladislav Hall in Prague Castle. On the floor below each window there is a plastic decoration in the form of a stylized circle reminiscent of gothic rotations with a pattern of flame patterns. Among the windows there are reliefs of plant motifs and coats of arms, above them lies stylized ribbons with names. The crown ledge with vegetative decoration is in the street facade and at the shield the gargoyle in the shape of male bust. Originally, the figure fresco of St. Wenceslas, the author of which was Jano Köhler, then a student of the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, stood out on the front.

During its history, the building served as a gendarmerie station for the first republic. During the 20th century, the house was connected with an important personality of Czech culture, as the painter Zdeněk Sýkora lived and formed here. This artist is considered to be a pioneer of geometric abstraction and the use of a computer in fine art.

The key moments in the history of the house include the year 1898 when its construction for Antonín Hesse was completed, the period of the first republic using the building as a gendarmerie station and the year 1964 when the house was entered in the state list of cultural monuments under the number 43520 / 5-1029.

Today, visitors can see this monument from outside in Hilbert Street. In the immediate vicinity is located the historical core of the city with the temple of St. Nicholas from Benedict Rejt, Žatecká gate and city fortification. The visit to this building offers a view of the historical architecture of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and reminds us of the activities of important personalities of Czech history of art and architecture.

Welcome to history's wanderings. Now you're standing right in front of the house with a descriptive sixty-seven in Hilbert Street, Louny. Raise your head and let the atmosphere of the past breathe upon you. In front of you, there is an extraordinary building, which, at first glance, will be impressed by its rich neo-gothic decoration. When you look at the facade, you will see a masterpiece that brings extraordinary beauty to the center of the city. Feel the fine details and artistic feeling with which the creators approached every stone.

Let's look into the past how this gem actually came into being. This year, a thousand eight hundred ninety-eight have entered the history of the city as a year to complete the construction of this township. You are standing in front of a construction that has grown up according to the design of an important Lounian native and gifted architect whose street name he bears. The house was built for residents named Antonín Hess whose name is still carved on the facade. Many decades passed and the importance of this building remained preserved, which was confirmed by the year nineteen hundred and sixty-four, when the house was officially listed on the state list of cultural monuments.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. Come closer to the walls and look at the details that make up the overall character of this building. The facade dominates a distinctive bay located on solid crackers. Right next to this, you will notice broken windows that have sharp arches and are supplemented with beautiful flame rings. When you take the view a little further, you will see stone coats of arms, fine plant reliefs, and also gargoyles that provide a mysterious touch of old times. The whole facade is literally interwoven with ornamental decoration, which shows the championship of the then construction masters.

But this house is not just a set of stone ornaments, it is connected to the fate of many interesting people. During the period of the so-called First Republic, this building served as a gendarmerie station where the law men oversaw order. Later, the house hid a creative soul, because there lived and formed a significant painter Zdeněk Sýkora. Among the personalities who left a mark in the history of this place, we must not forget the artist named Jano Köhler, whose creation enriched our cultural heritage. When you're standing there, imagine the conversations, the violence of the officials, the footsteps of the gendarmes and the silent concentration of the painter over his canvas that once took place behind these walls.

Stop for a moment and try to perceive the transformation of the functions this building has experienced. From a lavish mansion for a private person, to a law enforcement service, to a sanctuary for artists. It's fascinating how one place can carry so many different stories from different chapters of our history. On the facade you can still read the carved name Antonín Hess as an eternal reminder of the man for whom this house was built.

We hope you enjoyed the tour of this house. You can take another walk along the nearby Lounian streets and discover the other sights this picturesque city offers. Thank you for listening to our stories, and we wish you the rest of the day. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the historic core of the city Louny is less crowded tourists. The Neo-gothic facade of house No. 67, which is in good condition and offers interesting architectural details, is also better in these times.

The monument can be easily visited on foot because it is located right in the historical centre. The location is also available by public transport, check the current connection in the search engine.

Take with you comfortable shoes to walk along paved streets and possibly umbrella if you plan to visit during a period of more likely precipitation. Since this is an outdoor tour of the historical building, there is no need for special equipment, but good condition for short walks is welcome.

The morning or late afternoon light is ideal for photography, which underlines the rich ornament of the neo-gothic house. The best angles are offered from the opposite side of the street or from nearby crossroads where the connection of the building to the surrounding city fortification and Žatecká gate can be detected.

In the immediate surroundings, i.e. within a short walk, visit the temple of St. Nicholas by Benedict Rejt, Žatecká gate and the rest of the city fortification. These monuments form with house No. 67 a compact historical core that can be managed in an hour to two. St. Nicholas Temple Church building This magnificent sanctuary was built by the famous construction master Benedict Rejt. It is worth a visit because of its beautiful mains vaults and extraordinary late Gothic architecture.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the house facade shines in a fine light of the waking nature. The surroundings of the house decorate the first flowers and the air is fresh. I recommend visiting the memory in the morning when the atmosphere is quieter. Due to the variable weather, it is best to choose layered clothes to protect you from the cold wind.

The summer season brings sharp sun and rich colors of surrounding urban space. The building operates in the hot air monumentally and summer noise rules in the surroundings. To avoid the biggest crowds in the season, visitors should come first thing in the morning. Light, breathable clothes and a sun hat are suitable.

The space around the house is covered in golden and brown tones of fallen leaves. The light is softer and creates a nostalgic mood that underlines the historical character of the building. The ideal time for a tour is late afternoon. Don't forget the waterproof shoes because the roads can be wet.

In winter, a monument is made in the freezing air of snow and clean, especially if it is covered by snow. The atmosphere is calm and quiet, which allows deeper perception of architecture. It is necessary to wear warm winter clothes and observe shortened opening times. The best is a visit in the afternoon when the most light is.
