The Metropolis House, also known as Metropol, is a proud historical building from 1885-1886. It consists of a major urban dominant in Pod Deed street by jumping in Karlovy Vary. The building built in German Renaissance style has been registered as a cultural monument since 2013. It represents a proof of the building expansion of the spa town in the late 19th century.

The construction took place in 1885-1886 at the site of the older building Rosengarten. The initiators were Rudolf and Pauline Damm. The design of the building was developed by the builder Konrad Eckl. The project was subsequently developed by architect Gustav Wiedermann from Františkovy Lazne. Due to the requirements of the then building office, the project had to be modified and simplified several times. This was particularly reflected in the solution of roofs and corner towers. According to Eckl's project, the supporting tarass walls and terraces were also implemented, which are part of the urban solution of the object in the slope.

Architectural rendition is based on the principles of the German Renaissance. The building stands on a rectangular plan with bevelled corners and risalite. The main street facade is seven-axis and in the middle of the axis it contains the entrance placed in the editorial portal with the inscription Metropol. Analogically addressed southeast facade is headed for Luční vrch street. The southwest corner section is finished with a turret and contains a side entrance with a portal bearing the word Metropolis. The façade is decorated with rich stucco decoration, profiled champagne around windows and parapets with vegetative motifs. On the third above-ground floor are placed nikka with antikiating characters, the fourth floor of risalita is finished with balcony. The roof is made up of a saddle structure with windscreens, which is also lined with stucco decoration.

The original owners were married to Damm. At present, the construction is registered as a residential building owned by the unit owners' community. Since 2014, the house has been included in the urban conservation programme Karlovy Vary, which underlines its importance for maintaining the historical character of the city.

The Metropolis House is a valuable example of the architecture of history, which shaped the face of the Karlovy Vary spa centre in the 1980s. For visitors it represents an important landmark and a document of contemporary building art. When walking through the spa zone it is worth paying attention to the details of the facade and terraced layout, which places the construction sensitively in the narrow terrain.

Welcome to Karlovy Vary, where history meets the beauty of nature and where every stone tells its own story. Right now, you're standing in front of one of the dominance who is the face of this city. In front of you is dům Metropole, a building that immediately attracts attention with its appearance and size and looks very noble in the carvev of the city space. Stop for a moment, take a breath and just observe the general impression of this building. Feel its power and the way it affects the environment. It's a house that doesn't scream, but rather proudly reports its presence in the heart of the urban monument zone.

Let us now look together at how this building was created and at what time it was born. The end of the nineteenth century was a period of great bloom and ambition for Karlovy Vary. It is in this atmosphere, between 1885 and 1886 that dům Metropole was built. Imagine the excitement at the time, the sound of carriages on the streets, and the expectations of the people who watched this magnificent building grow gradually. Two men who had a vision of a modern but historically anchored city were behind its creation. He was builder Konrad Eckl and architect Gustav Wiedermann. Together, they designed an object in the spirit of the German Renaissance, a style that at that time expressed stability, wealth and cultural awareness.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. Look up at the front of the house. Notice the rich stucco decoration of the facade. The stucco, the fine plastic decoration on the surface of the walls, gives the building depth and rhythm. These details make the Metropolis house a real jewel. The architects wanted the building to act luxuriously and representatively, and it was in these fine layers and ornaments that they achieved it. See how light and shadow play on the surface of the walls, which creates a dynamic image that changes with every step you take. The whole building was designed to form an urban dominance, which means it should have been seen from a distance and served as a landmark for all who move through the city.

When you look at the building like that, you might wonder if it was always exactly what you see today. Here we come to one of the most interesting parts of her story. Do you know that even the greatest dreams of architects sometimes encounter the harsh reality of official demands? The Metropolis house project was not a road without obstacles. The original plans had to be amended and simplified several times because of the requirements of the then office. It's not just a dry fact from the papers, it's a real conflict of vision. These changes have affected the shape of roofs and also the corner tower you see before you. If it hadn't been for official intervention, maybe the house would have looked even more complicated or bold. It is fascinating to think that even the construction so worked out is the result of compromises between artistic intent and the rules of the then administrative system.

What's interesting is what was in this place before. The Metropolis house was not created in an empty field, but replaced an older object that carried the poetic name Rosengarten, which in translation means a rose garden. Imagine the contrast. Once upon a time there was probably a finer, garden atmosphere, which was replaced by this monumental stone building. It is a symbol of the transformation of the city from a quiet spa corner to a large town centre with ambitious architecture.

The building is associated with specific names that have breathed life into it over the years. The personalities we connect to the Metropolis house include Rudolf Damm and Pauline Dammová. Even though they may not be known in history books today as great monarchs, they were the very people who formed the tissue of the city and lived their lives in these areas. The Metropolis house, despite its representative appearance, served and served as an apartment house. It means that there were ordinary human stories behind the decorated walls, children's laughter and family dinners. This combination of public monumentality and private housing is very typical of Karlovy Vary.

Now you're becoming a bit of a detective. Look around you and see how the building fits into the field. Karlovy Vary is known for its hilly terrain, and dům Metropole must work with it. Part of the urban solution on this slope are also supporting walls and terraces. Notice how architects have solved transitions between different levels of the country. These elements are not only a practical solution so that the house does not stand in instability but forms an organic part of the complex. Terrace gardens provide air space and remind us that even in dense buildings it is important to maintain contact with nature.

But time does not stand, and buildings age. For dům Metropole to remain in such a beautiful state, it had to be recognized as a valuable piece of history. In 2013 it was officially declared a cultural monument. This was a crucial step because such recognition means that the building is protected and its values must be preserved for future generations. A year later, in 2014, the house was included in the urban conservation programme Karlovy Vary. This means that efforts and means are being invested in it so that both its facade and its structures remain in perfect condition and that even you can admire the fine stucco details that we talked about today.

When you're standing outside the Metropolis house today, you see more than just walls and a roof. You see the ambition of the late nineteenth century, you see an architect fighting an official, and you see the transformation from a rose garden into an urban dominance. It is a place where the pursuit of perfection has met reality, and yet something has emerged that still fascinates us after over a hundred years.

Before we say good-bye and you move on, I suggest you go around the building again slowly. Try looking at it from different angles. Notice how her silhouette changes depending on where you stand. Try to imagine how the first residents felt when they first moved to this modern house in 1886.

Thank you for stopping by the Metropolis house with me. I hope this short trip to history has helped you see this building with different eyes. Karlovy Vary has up their sleeve yet many other secrets and beautiful places that await your discovery. I wish you a pleasant further walk through the city, full of new impressions and inspiration. Look forward to other sights that remind you how rich and fascinating the history of this unique city is. Goodbye and enjoy your day in Karlovy Vary.
