The House of the Primavesi family is a representative corner palace in Šumperk at the address Žerotínova 267 / 11. It originated in 1897 and combines the style of late historism with the elements of Art Nouveau. The construction is protected as a cultural monument.

The building was built for Moritz Primavesi, who operated, for example, a mill in Vrbna, under Pradad. The mansion was meant to combine luxury housing with family business activities. The project was developed by renowned Viennese architects Anton and Josef Drexler, also authors of the German Gymnasium building in Šumperk. The realization was entrusted to the local builder Franz Riess.

The business family Primavesi came to North Moravia from the Italian Lombardy in the late 18th century. This is where he built a major bank house and capital companies. Carl Anton Primavesi founded sugar factories and distilleries all over Moravia. Later, the family closely associated with the art world. This was illustrated by the benefactor Otto Primavesi, son of Moritz, who had built a summer residence in Kouty nad Desna according to Josef Hoffmann's design.

The palace is a two-story double-wing L-shaped object with bevelled corners. It is built from a brick wall with a smooth limestone plaster and a rolled-up saddle roof covered with shale. The western facade has six axes, the southern four and one axis are located in the corner. The ground floor is decorated with smooth plinth and horizontal barefoot. The floor is separated by a profiled cordon ledge, followed by barefoot pilasters with crown ledge and tooth sections. The upper parts of the pilastres and the surfaces are decorated with rich stucco plant decoration with wreaths and tassels.

The windows of the first floor are supplemented by odd balustades in parapets and triangular frontons. The dominant is the corner bay on the first floor, carried by decorated consoles. Above it is a small stone balustada with balls on corner pillars on the second floor. The garden part of the house includes a walled gazebo and a bunk wooden veranda in the form of a winter garden, carried by thin cast iron columns.

The main entrance from the west side consists of a rectangular portal with a glass door. The entrance corridor leading to the yard has mirror ceilings with mascarons and stucco decoration. The stone staircase is equipped with cast iron railing. The original stucco decorations and the ceiling Fabiums are preserved in the first and second floors. The building is partially underwritten by spaces with segment vaults to traverses.

Moritz Primavesi did not live to finish the house, the object subsequently inherited Sigmund Primavesi. The building was entered in the central list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic on 17 February 1976. The commemorative catalogue evaluates it as a very valuable example of historical architecture. The Palace currently houses the Basic Art School Šumperk.

The building represents an important example of the architecture of the late 19th century and testifies to the flourishing industrial business in the region. It is recommended to visit it for unique facade and details of interior equipment.

Welcome to Šumperk. Right now, you're facing one of the most prominent buildings in the city. Take a look at this magnificent corner palace, which will immediately impress you with its size and appearance. It is a building that carries the spirit of ancient elegance and wealth, while at the same time forming the dominion of this place. When you look at it, you see not only architecture, but also the story of the ambition and success of a family that has left a deep mark in our region.

Now let's stop at how this house came into being and why it actually stands here. It all started much before this building was built. Around the year seven hundred and ninety came to North Moravia the business family Primaves. They came from Italy and brought with them a trade talent and a desire to build. After decades of successful business in the region, it was necessary to create a seat that corresponded to their social status and wealth. So in the year one thousand eight hundred ninety-seven this representative palace was created. It was not just an ordinary house, but a luxury apartment that was closely linked to the family's business activities. It was a symbol of their power and stability in Šumperk.

Now pay attention to the very form of the building. If you look at its shapes and details, you'll see an interesting connection between the two currents of that time. The construction combines the style of late history with the elements of the Art Nouveau. Historism returns to proven patterns from the past, while Art Nouveau brings new, lighter and more modern elements. The whole project was developed by recognized Viennese architects, Anton and Josef Drexler. The fact that the family reached for the creator of Vienna, then the main centre of culture and fashion, clearly shows how high the demands of quality and aesthetics were. Look at the facade and see how harmonically these two styles complement. The building looks noble, but at the same time you feel the dynamics of the late nineteenth century.

When we think about this place, we can't forget the people who inhaled his life. The Primaves family was made up of strong personalities. Among them were Carl Anton, Moritz, Sigmund and Otto Primavesi. Each of them contributed to the fact that their family name became synonymous with success. Note, however, that history is not always about triumph, but also about sad accidents. This palace was built for Moritz Primavesi, who was the main contractor of this project. But it is tragic that he did not live to see the construction complete. He put his vision and means into it, but the resulting luxury home could no longer use itself. It's a quiet reminder detail that gives the building a certain charge.

You might be interested in what's behind the main walls. In addition to the representative premises, which were used for living and business, the garden part also belongs to the house. If you have the opportunity to look inside, note the walled gazebo and wooden porch. These elements provided the house with a family character and provided shelter for rest away from the noisy streets of the city. It is fascinating to imagine how members of the Primaves family spent their afternoon hours here, planning their business affairs or visiting significant visits.

But time passes and the function of buildings changes. The Primavesi Palace was preserved in such a condition that it was entered in the central list of cultural monuments in the year one thousand nine hundred seventy-six. This means that the state recognised its exceptional architectural value and ensured that the building was not destroyed or inappropriately rebuilt. The Italian business family no longer lives in the palace today, but the building still serves the community and education. Currently, the basic art school Šumperk is based here. It is a beautiful turn of fate that a place that was built as a symbol of wealth and status is now used to develop talent and educate children in the field of art.

If you look at this home again, try to imagine Šumperk over a century ago. Imagine carriages passing through the streets and people in period clothing who looked with respect at this newly grown palace. This building is like an open book that tells us about migration, about the Viennese influence in our city and how the needs of society change. From a luxury family residence to a protected monument to a school for young artists.

I hope this short trip to history has helped you to better perceive the beauty and importance of the House of Primaves. It is a place where Italy, Vienna and Moravia meet in one unique architectural unit. Now you can continue to explore other beautiful corners of Šumperk. Let yourself be guided by curiosity and discover further traces of the past that still live in this city. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant continued journey.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is the late afternoon when the sun hits the corner facade and highlights the details of Art Nouveau and History. The building is available by car and public transport; Check the current connection in the search engine.

Take a high-quality camera or phone to search. As it is a residential building, focus on the details of the window frames and wall decoration from the sidewalk.

For the best pictures we recommend a place on the opposite corner of the street from where you can see the whole representative face of the house. The ideal light for capturing the colors of the facade is during the golden hour before sunset.

Families with children can use a walk around the house to search for various decorative elements on the facade, which will entertain children as a search for hidden details in architecture.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring nature wakes up around the city and the building gets a fresh look accompanied by first flowers. The soft spring light beautifully decorate the facade, which is ideal for shooting details from the street. We recommend light but laminated clothing and a visit in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

Summer brings intense sun that highlights the colors and shapes of this noble mansion. The atmosphere is hot, and there's the biggest crowd in the streets. The best is to come early in the morning or at dusk to avoid heat, and not forget the comfortable shoes for city walks.

In autumn, the surroundings turn into golden and brown tones that match the historical character of the building. The air is fresh and the light is lighter, which creates a nostalgic mood. It is advisable to choose a waterproof coat and head into the city in the afternoon when the sun falls at a oblique angle.

Zimą operates a palace in quiet and quiet, often accompanied by a freezing fog or snow that highlights its silhouette. In advent time, the surroundings are lit and cozy. Hot clothes, gloves and tight shoes with anti-slip soles are essential for walking outside.
