Dům rytířů Sokolů z Mor is an important town house no. 43 in Louny, located on the south side of the Brewery Street north of St. Nicholas' church. This late Gothic building from the 15th century was famous for its richly decorated bay and today serves as the seat of the regional museum.

Written references to the building dates back to the beginning of the 15th century. The house was won by Jan Sokol, the eldest son of Vaňek Sokol, as a wedding gift after marriage to Anna, daughter of the Lounian console Václav Suchý. The family with roots in the local southernship was one of the coat of arms townspeople. Jan Sokol received a coat of arms from King Vladislav II. in the 15th century and the addition from Mor was deduced from the village of Mory near Podbořán. The house is supposed to have been remodeled between 1470 and 1480, before the owners were promoted to noble state.

The most important building element can be described as a bay from 1491, which is evidenced by the late Gothic stone art. The entrance portal underneath carries a typical arch in the shape of a donkey's spine. Following the Great Lonian Fire in March 1517, extensive reconstruction was followed between 1517 and 1525. Medieval origins are evidenced by underground walls and massive perimeter walls. The interior spaces on the ground floor are sealed with a rib arch; the ribs in the mazhaus are based on two circular clamps and blend into the consoles in the form of bizarre human heads.

Over the centuries the house alternated with the owner and underwent many modifications. In the 19th century the facade gained a classical look, which in 1890 the architect Josef Mocker modified into neogotic form. Mocker then added, among other things, a cimmer and the signs of a lion and an eagle over the orbs. The original Knights of the Sokol of Mor coat of arms remains preserved to this day in the level of skyline parapets. Smooth plaster was repaired in 1925 and since 1938 the roof has covered the etternite templates laid on the coso.

The key moments for the design of the building were the creation of a decorative bay in 1491 and the subsequent restoration after the fire in 1517. The interesting thing is that there used to be sculptures on the corners of the arches, which were reported to represent Master Jan Hus and Jerome Prague; But since 1890 they have been missing. Underground spaces, accessible by stairs from 1890, contain the remains of medieval masonry and ventilation vents for air circulation.

Dům rytířů Sokolů z Mor is a valuable document of Lounian urban architecture. Thanks to its preserved Gothic core and later modifications, it offers insight into the history of the city. Visiting the museum allows you to explore these premises and study in detail late Gothic elements. The building is open to the public and its uniqueness forms an important part of the historical centre of Loun.

Welcome to the Louny, a city full of history and beauty! You are standing in front of one of the most famous buildings in our region - Dům rytířů Sokolů z Mor. This formidable townhouse, which now serves as the seat of the regional museum, is a real treasure for every loving history.

Dům rytířů Sokolů z Mor has a long and interesting history. Its origin dates back to the 15th century, when it was built as a mansion for rich townspeople. The most important event in his CV is 1491, when a famous late Gothic bay was built. This detailed and richly decorated element represents the peak of the stoneware art of the time.

Let's see what interests you right now. Note above the windows of the richly decorated bay. Its complexity and detail are the real proof of the Gothic Stonecutter Championship. Below this distinctive element is an entrance portal with an arch shaped as a donkey's spine, which is another attraction of this city's work.

The house was historically connected with coat of arms families that influenced its development. In 1517, there was a fundamental change when the house suffered damage during the Lonian fire and was subsequently rebuilt. Despite all the difficulties, this house has become a home for Jan Sokol of Mor, who received him as a wedding gift after marriage to the daughter of the Lounian concierge. This family derived its adjoining from the nearby village of Mor near Podborán.

There was another significant change in the 19th century when the neo-gothic reconstruction of the facade was carried out by the architect Josefov Mocker. His work brought new life and elegant style, which still affects the perception of this important historical place.

The key personalities associated with this monument include not only Jan Sokol z Mor, but also other major townspeople such as Vaňek Sokol and Václav Suchý z Loun. Their stories are an integral part of the history of this house.

The interesting thing is that this house not only reflects architectural changes over the centuries, but also contains many stories and legends. Although there may be different histories, it is one of the most significant ones - the one about the bay itself from 1491. Its complexity and artistic value are the real proof of the Gothic Stonecutter Championship.

Allow me to invite you to explore this fascinating place again. Every aisle and every element of this monument has its stories and mysteries. I hope you have managed to feel their beauty and history as many visitors do. When we meet again - either in your next trip to the Louns or another historic place. Goodbye and have a nice day!

Tips for visitors

To visit this historic house in Louny it is ideal to choose a sunny morning, when natural light beautifully highlights the details of neo-gothic modifications on the facade. If you are going to take pictures, focus on capturing richly decorated elements and arched architecture that excel especially in side lighting. Take comfortable shoes to the museum to move on historic floors and possibly a smaller backpack for personal items to keep your hands open for viewing exhibits. For families with children, a visit is an opportunity to learn the medieval history of the city, and we recommend to prepare in advance the attractions of knights that will attract children more than just the walls themselves. In the immediate vicinity of the museum, you can visit the majestic church of St. Nicholas and walk through the entire historical centre of Louny, which offers a unique atmosphere of old times.
