The Golden Eagle House in Prague 1 (Staré Město) is a three-story building with a rich history. It is a remarkable architectural transformation from the original Romanesque building into a Gothic, Renaissance and finally a Baroque building. Its beginnings date back to the 13th century, when the object was first gothic. In 1964 it was declared a cultural monument.

The building was built in the Middle Ages, when Prague developed into an important political and cultural centre. The influence of Gothic was also reflected in its architecture. The original Romanesque foundation was expanded in the 13th to 14th centuries. The name "The Golden Eagle" is documented already in 1428, which confirms the long tradition and importance of the house in urban space.

Architectural is a fascinating blend of different styles. Gothic elements from the 13th to 14th century are still visible in the structure itself. At the beginning of the 17th century a Renaissance reconstruction took place, during which the house was raised by the third floor. The facade of the mengheading to the Little Square was created in the style of the high baroque shortly before 1725. In 1889, the pharmacist František Schnöbling, who set up a pharmacy at the Golden Crown, modified the parter in novobaročně. Sometimes a gilded imperial crown above the parterre causes confusion called "The Crown.".

Over the years, the house has been in the hands of various owners and administrators. Between 1910-1936 the interior was modified according to the plans of architects Tomáš Šášek and Josef Blech. After 1958, the Prague Centre of State Monument Care and Nature Protection was located here, which underlines the value of the building for cultural heritage.

Today dům U Zlatého orla is a cultural monument located on a deep parcel with a three-story front. Its value lies in a unique combination of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. The building is accessible to visitors and represents a lively view of Prague history.

The Golden Eagle House is not only an architectural unique but also witnessed many changes in Czech history. They are a valuable part of Prague's heritage. Visit this place offers a unique opportunity to explore the past of the city and appreciate its aesthetic beauty.

Welcome to the heart of old Prague. You're standing in a place where time stops, and yet every second keeps changing. In front of your eyes is dům U Zlatého orla. Look at him now with all your eyes. It's not just an ordinary building made of stone and mortar. It's a living chronicle of the city that takes place right in front of you in Little Square. Feel the atmosphere of this place where the whispers of the ancient past mingle with the constant excitement of the present. This house is not just an object, it's a petrified story that consists of many centuries, many lives and many architectural visions.

In order to really understand what you're seeing right now, we need to go back deep into the past together. Imagine Prague in the 13th century. The city was much smaller, more crude, but already very fascinating. It was at this time, in the beginning of the construction, where the original Romanesque house was built. It was a robust object, solid and stable, which formed the basis for everything that came later. Over time, in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, people's needs and the city itself began to change. The house had to grow along with the city, so it was expanded in Gothic style. For centuries, she added her own layer, her own soul.

Now pay attention to how the face of this building changes and how its height changes. If you look up, you realize the house has three floors. However, this three-story character is not original. In the early seventeenth century came the time of the Renaissance. That was the time when people looked at the world differently, with a new sense of space and proportion. In this Renaissance reconstruction the house was not only rebuilt but also increased by the whole floor. That's how he got his height today and started dominating his surroundings.

Now let's focus on what you see most specifically, that is, the front wall of the house itself, towards Little Square. This facade is the peak of Baroque architecture. It originated shortly before the year seventeen hundred twenty-five and it is this style that gives the house its present, noble and rich appearance. Feel the elegance that the Baroque style has brought to the streets of Prague. It is precisely this facade that determines the first impression that the house has on you at the moment. It's a face that changed to match the taste and the image of the time.

But history doesn't stop in the eighteenth century. If you look down now, at the lowest part of the building, the parter, you'll see another fascinating change. In a thousand and eight hundred and eighty-nine, this space was modified in a neo-Baroque style. This modification was the work of a pharmacist named František. Imagine the contrast between the older layers of the house and this modern treatment that was supposed to give the building a new, fresh look of the late nineteenth century. Perhaps you can imagine how people in this space were moving around at the time looking for help, how the fragrance of herbs was mixed and how the new architecture became part of Prague's everyday life.

Although the names of many builders and architects who shaped this house have remained forgotten in history, the character of pharmacist František gives us a hint of the human story. It is a reminder that every building in the past has been a home, a workplace or a business of particular people. This house wasn't just an empty box, it was part of a living organism of the city.

The interesting thing that can now surprise you and leave you in awe is the very name of this house. The name Golden Eagle sounds so noble and historic, and it has a very good reason. Its existence is not only a modern designation, but is documented already in the year one thousand four hundred twenty-eight. This means that people in Prague knew this house and called it for centuries, much before the Baroque facade was built here or before the house became a cultural monument, which happened in a thousand nine hundred sixty-four. Imagine how many people have already gone through this name, how many coffers have happened under it and how many generations of Pražans have connected this name to this particular place. It's an incredible continuity that connects the Middle Ages to today.

The Golden Eagle House is like a book whose pages are made up of stone and architecture. Every epoch, from Romanesque stability to gothic growth and Renaissance height to baroque elegance and neo-Baroque adjustments, has left its mark. It is a witness to many generations and the constant transformation of our city.

I hope this short journey over time has helped you better understand this fascinating object and perceive it more comprehensively. Let yourself be carried away by the magic of the old town, observe the details around you and continue to explore these historical treasures that Prague offers at every turn. Thank you for spending this moment with us. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the Golden Eagle House is in the spring or autumn period when there are fewer people and the atmosphere on the street is quieter. This house has a rich history that is reflected in its architectural design, so it can be viewed in peace without the distress of a large number of visitors.

We recommend the use of public transport such as metro or buses that are easily accessible and lead directly to the Small Square. You can find the current connection using an online search engine or mobile application for transport.

When you visit the Golden Eagle House, it's good to bring a protective umbrella and water. Although the visit may not be long, it may be useful to have these basic things while walking through the Old Town streets.

Photography is one of the best activities in this place. The best light is usually in the morning or in the evening, when the sun is not directly above the head and gives the shadows a dramatic effect. Try to capture different angles for interesting photos of the architecture of the house.

In the surroundings of Dom U Zlatý eagles you can visit other historical monuments such as churches or ancient streets of Old Town. For families with children it can be interesting to explore the surrounding markets and gardens where children can move freely.
