Evangelický kostel (Jablonné v Podještědí) Church

The Evangelický Křížový Church in Jablonné v Podještědí is a remarkable Neo-Gothic church, constructed in 1902 by local German-speaking evangelicals. Located on a small hill between Lidická and Valtinovská streets, this historical monument reflects the cultural diversity of early 20th-century Czech lands within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The church's origins are deeply rooted in the socio-cultural dynamics at the turn of the century. Construction began on September 22, 1901, and the church was consecrated on July 21, 1902. Architecturally, the Evangelický Křížový Church features a single-nave structure with a polygonal presbytery, designed by the firm Melzen z Liberce. The building is uniquely oriented; its presbytery faces east-southeast due to its hilltop location. This orientation adds character to the church's design. Notably, the presbytery houses two stained glass windows donated by Protestant women from Löbau and Žitava, symbolizing the apostles Paul and John the Baptist. Initially owned by local German-speaking evangelicals, it came under the Czechoslovak Hussite Church's administration after World War II. Later, it was managed by the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren. Despite periods of neglect following the war, community efforts played a crucial role in preserving the church. Farářka Jiřina Klásková from Hrádek nad Nisou spearheaded initiatives to secure funds for its restoration. Thanks to these efforts and contributions from the ONV in České Lípě, the church underwent significant repairs, culminating in a re-consecration on October 4, 1986.

The church has witnessed several key events that underscore its historical significance. The centennial of its foundation was celebrated with ceremonies on September 22, 2001, honoring both the original German-speaking founders and those who contributed to its preservation. These celebrations reflect the enduring legacy of the community's commitment to maintaining this cultural landmark.

Today, the Evangelický Křížový Church remains an active site for worship, albeit with limited services. The religious community in Liberec conducts services once every two weeks during the summer months at the church itself; otherwise, gatherings take place in a senior citizens' home.
