The town fortifications in Jablonné in Podzedědí form broken-down medieval walls from the 13th or 14th century. This building in the Liberec Region, protected as a cultural monument, was used to defend the historical centre of the town on the island wall.

Jabloné had an urban character in the middle of the thirteenth century and as a small town it is documented to 1320. The fortifications themselves are likely to have arisen in the third or fourteenth century, the first written mention of which dates back to 1399.

The construction system consisted of a single wall of 150 to 160 centimeters thick. The wall was reinforced by eight or nine prism towers or baskets with outside dimensions 3,5 × 8,5 meters. The preserved parts of the wall are treated many times, often without inner cheek and overgrown vegetation. In two places you can see a torso of a pre-breast wall with a thickness of 60 to 70 centimetres and a hint of cimburi can be seen in house No. 79. A pair of gates were led into the city in the form of traversing prism towers. The upper gate, or Zittava gate, stood in the north and a short moat was dug before it. The lower gate, also known as Byslavská or Pražská, was originally on a steep slope above the crossroads of Lidicka and Tyršova, but was later moved to the neighboring Lidická street. At the lower gate, the torso of its ten metres wide facade was preserved and the portal, which was probably followed by a arched passage, was closed by a trapdoor.

The fate of the fortifications was closely linked to numerous conflicts. During the Hussite wars Jablonné was attacked in 1424, 1425, 1426, 1429 and 1431, while in 1427 the city was burned down. In 1444 they took place in the vicinity of the fight of Lusatian Six Cities against the local thieving nobility. During the reign of Jiří of Poděbrad, the townspeople had to support the King's expedition against Zitava in 1467, after which they were subsequently besieged by the Zittau troops. In 1593 Jan Berka issued a privilege which made it easier for the city to repair the walls. In 1648, the Lužické army besieged the city church with a large cannon, suggesting that the fortifications had already been so badly damaged that only a small part of the church area could be defended.

Today, these broken remains of medieval fortification are protected as a cultural monument. Despite their fragmented form, they are an important historical element that allows you to see the history of the medieval city. This monument is worth a visit to anyone who is interested in historical architecture and the fates of old urban fortifications.

Welcome to Jablonné in Podjedí. You've just entered a space where history touches the present in a very tangible way. Stop for a moment, take a breath and look around you. You stand before the broken-down urban fortification, before the silent witnesses of centuries that carry stories of power, fear, courage, and the daily efforts of people who lived here long before us. What you see in front of you is not just ordinary ruins or old walls. These are the remains of the walls that once defined the border between the city's safe interior and the unknown, often dangerous world within it. Feel the atmosphere of this place and try to imagine what Jablonné looked like when these walls formed an impenetrable ring around the settlement.

Let's go back in time together now. In order to understand why these walls were even built, we must move to the deep Middle Ages, probably the 13th or 14th century. At that time, fortifications were not only a question of prestige, but above all a question of survival. Cities in Podzedědí were both strategically important and vulnerable. The construction of walls was a huge financial and human effort that required precise planning and thousands of hours of hard work. Although we do not know the names of the particular architects who designed this system, their work was so good that even for hundreds of years there is still a torza of walls and baskets that are today properly protected as a cultural monument.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself before you. Even though the walls are preserved only broken, they still tell us about their original power. Notice the thickness of these walls. Imagine that the construction system itself was made up of a single wall, the width of which was up to 100 or 60 centimeters. That's more than a foot and a half of solid rock to resist attacks, rams and first firearms. Try to reconstruct the entire city district in spirit. There were strategic points attached to this main wall that we call bastion. The overall system amplified eight or nine of these baskets, which served as sightseeing points and defensive points, from where the shooters could control the surroundings and deny the enemy access to the wall itself. Look at these remains of stone structures and see how massive the entire fortification must have been in order to provide a sense of absolute safety to all Jablonný residents.

When we think about these walls, we can't ignore the times of the greatest trials. The urban fortification was of key importance for defending the city during the Hussite wars and other conflicts that shook our countries in the later Middle Ages. Imagine the tension that must have existed on the walls when enemy troops appeared on the horizon. The walls were not only a passive obstacle, but a living organism where soldiers and citizens took turns. This is where the fate of the entire city was decided. Every crack in the wall was a threat at the time, and every repair was a victory.

But time passes relentlessly, and even the strongest walls require care. Let's move forward a little bit in time, to the year one thousand five hundred ninety-three. This year, John Berka's character appears. Although he may not be as well known in textbooks as the great monarchs, he was very important to Jablonné at the time. It was Jan Berka who issued a privilege, a special prerogative, which greatly facilitated the repair of the walls. At that time, the walls may not have been as critical as in Hussite times, but they were still a symbol of urban order and protection. Thanks to this legal step, more resources and efforts could be put into repairs, allowing the walls to survive in the form we see them today. It's fascinating how one document from the 16th century could affect what you see today with your eyes.

And now I'm going to lead you to one interesting thing that may not be visible at first sight, but gives this place some depth. Think about when we first learned about these walls from the papers. The first written mention of the town fortification in Jablonny in Podjedědí dates back to a thousand three hundred ninety-nine. This means that the walls probably stood for decades before they were officially entered into chronicles or documents. This gap between the construction and the first entry is typical of the Middle Ages, when things were simply done and their existence was for all to see. The walls were just there, protecting people, and being part of the landscape without the need for written documentation. It's a little historical mystery that teaches us that many of what was important remained in oblivion and survived only through physical traces in the landscape.

Now, when you look around you, you realize you're standing in a place where centuries intersect. From the unknown builders of the thirteenth century, to the fighting people of the Hussite era, to the administrative decisions of John Berka. These broken walls are like a torn book, from which we have lost some pages, but the main story remains understandable. It's a story about trying a man to bend his space, create a safe harbor and protect his loved ones.

Imagine the noise of the market, the call of the guards and the sound of the smiths' hammers. Today, there is peace that allows for deeper reflection. I suggest you now walk quietly around the preserved torso walls and bastion. Note the details in the stone, look for traces of ancient repairs and try to imagine how tall and impenetrable these walls once were. Let yourself be guided by your imagination and see how the history of the entire region of Podjedědí spreads under your feet.

That concludes our short journey to the town fortification in Jablonny, Podjedědí. I hope that this insight into the past has helped you better understand the importance of this place. You are now fully entrusted with the space. Go through the rest of the walls in anonium, soak up the atmosphere of this historic space and be inspired by the silent storytelling of old stones. I wish you a pleasant continued tour of the city and its hidden treasures. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is late afternoon hours, when the low sun highlights the texture of the stone remains of the walls. Spring and autumn months are ideal thanks to pleasant temperatures.

You can reach Jablonný in Podjedědí by car and public transport.

We recommend shoes suitable for walking on urban terrain because the walls are broken and spread in space. Don't forget the drinking water.

For the best photos, focus on torza walls and remnants of baskets. The ideal light for capturing the details of the medieval masonry is shortly before sunset.

For families with children, a visit to the walls is a great opportunity to familiarize themselves with the history of medieval fortification. Since there are no other monuments in the immediate vicinity, we recommend a survey of Jablonný himself.
