Flájský plavební kanál also known as The new navigation channel or Neugrabenflöße is a historical water work located in the village Český Jiřetín. This channel was built between 1624 and 1629 for transporting wood from the Erzgebirge Mountains to Freiberg, a city in Saxony. It is considered one of the oldest technical water monuments in the Czech Republic and has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958.

The creation of the canal was motivated by the economic needs of the time. The Saxon city of Freiberg, the centre of silver processing in the Middle Ages and the early modern era, required charcoal for metallurgical processes. The nearest forests were located on the ridges of the Erzgebirge Mountains, which led to the need for an efficient way of transporting wood. After negotiations between the Saxon Kurfiøt and Lobkovice, an agreement on the construction of the canal was concluded in 1623, which enabled its implementation in the territory of Lobkovice.

The architecture of the channel is remarkable with its technical skill. He began at the village of Fláj and continued through Český Jiřetín to Saxony, where he flowed into the river Muldy. The total length of the channel was 18.2 km with a depth of 120 cm and a width of 280 cm at the beginning to 180 cm during the period. Above Český Jiřetín he was carved into a rock, which shows the complexity of his construction. The work was completed on 8 March 1629 with costs of 4959 tolars.

The wood flooring took place mainly during the spring season, when there was enough water for the canal's navigability. It was cleaned and repaired after the voyage, which allowed further use. Despite the ban on the export of timber beyond the border, which was issued by the Prague governor in 1729 and Empress Marie Terez, sailing took place until 1872 (or according to some sources even until 1874).

In 1882-1883 a cardboard factory was built in Český Jiřetín, which used the sailing channel as a drive for the water turbine. This new use led to the creation of an artificial waterfall, a popular trip point in the early 20th century.

Today Flájský plavební kanál is protected as a cultural monument and its history has been restored thanks to the efforts of various associations and projects that have tried to communicate contact between the Czech and German parties. In 2012, the project of Czech and German partners started to partially repair the canal and build a cross-border path that was festively opened in 2013.

Flájský plavební kanál is today not only a technical monument, but also a witness to history and cooperation between nations. His visit offers a view of the past and a reminder of the importance of water works for the economy and the environment of the region.

Welcome to the Fláj Canal, one of the oldest technical water monuments of our territory. You are standing in front of this historically rich place where the forests of the Erzgebirge Mountains connect with the history of industry and engineering. Under your feet is a landscape work carved directly into the rock, giving us a unique opportunity to see its beauty and try out the historical context.

The Flájský plavební kanál was built between 1624 and 1629 as part of the contract between the Lobkovice family and the Saxon Kurfiøt. The aim of this agreement was to facilitate the transport of wood from forest areas on the ridges of the Erzgebirge Mountains to the smelters in Freiberg. This channel, also known as the New Navigational Channel or Neugrabenflöße, became a life-giving artery for the industrial development of that time.

Look up and look down his shores. Notice how the channel was carved directly into the rock above Český Jiřetín. This detail shows the huge work and planning that was needed to create such sophisticated water works in the 17th century. Even if we don't know the names of the architects, their engineering skills are visible in every section of this channel.

The key personalities associated with this monument are Lobkovicové and saský kurfiřt. Their decision to create this channel not only affected wood transport, but also contributed to the economic boom of the area. The sailing of the wood took place until 1872 or 1874, indicating a long history of its use.

The interesting thing is that despite its ancient origins, Flájský plavební kanál was maintained until the 19th century. This continued functionality underlines its importance to the regional economy for centuries.

Now that you have noticed these historical and technical details, I invite you to further explore the surrounding areas. Every step can reveal new aspects of this fascinating monument. Thank you for your visit and I hope you liked Flájský plavební kanál as much as I like it.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the Fláska Canal is in the spring and autumn season when vegetation is best visible and light pleasant. These months offer a peaceful atmosphere to explore historical ruins.

For the journey we recommend the use of a passenger car or public transport. You can check the current connection in the online search engine.

When visiting take with you a lot of drinking water, sun protection and shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain. In addition, it is a good idea to carry a map or GPS device for better orientation.

For photography are the best places at the beginning and end of the channel where panoramic views can be captured. The best light offers early morning or late afternoon when the sun is not directly above your head.

In the vicinity of the canal you can visit Český Jiřetín, a small town with historical center. For families with children it is suitable to walk along the surrounding paths and visit the natural environment.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In spring, life wakes up around the canal. The trees start to green and the light is fine, which highlights the old stone walls beautifully. The atmosphere is fresh and hopeful. I recommend wearing clothes that can be layered because the wounds are usually cold and the afternoon can be warm. It's an ideal time for a peaceful observation of nature without large groups of people.

Summer: In the summer months there is a rich green and the sun hits the ruins. The air may be hot, but the shadows of the trees offer shelter. Due to the increased number of visitors in the main summer season, it is best to come early in the morning to enjoy your peace and avoid the greatest heat. Don't forget the headgear and plenty of fluids.

Autumn: Autumn brings gold and brown to the landscape. The fog is often lazily rolled over the water surface and the old walls seem mysterious. It's the best time for peace lovers. Because of the damp air and the falling leaves, I recommend you keep your shoes tighter so you don't slip along the road. The weather is unpredictable, so keep your waterproof jacket ready.

Winter: Winter turns the channel into a quiet and white landscape. The bare branches of trees and snow covering the ruins create a raw but beautiful view. The atmosphere is very quiet and lonely. Due to low temperatures it is necessary to have very warm clothes. Since the day is short, plan a visit around noon to use the most light.
