The Hornický - Lidový dům, also known as Společenský dům Hornický – Lidový, is a culturally significant building located in Kladno, Czech Republic. Constructed between 1923 and 1925, it originally served as the headquarters for the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party. Architect Rudolf Černé designed this monument, which stands out due to its unique blend of Cubism and Czech Modernism.

The building's origin is rooted in political shifts following World War I when the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party lost its original premises to the newly formed Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. In response, they acquired land at the intersection of what are now Náměstí Svobody and ulice Čs. armády. Architect Rudolf Černé was commissioned to design a new headquarters that would serve as both a social hub and represent the party's modernist aspirations. The construction by Kladno-based firm Emila Hraběte took place from 1923 to 1925, culminating in an inauguration on May 30, 1925.

Architecturally, the Hornický - Lidový dům is notable for its innovative design addressing a narrow corner plot. Černé's solution was a two-story complex with interconnected internal staircases accessible from both sides. The building features a distinctive facade combining Cubism and Czech Modernism. Originally, it housed social spaces, a restaurant, and operational areas, all integrated into a cohesive design allowing for shared and separate use of its facilities.

Ownership has changed hands several times due to financial difficulties faced by the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party in the late 1930s. It was sold at auction and subsequently acquired by the Ministry of Public Works before changing ownership multiple times again. In 1998, České spořitelna purchased the property during a small privatization process.

Throughout its history, the Hornický - Lidový dům has been the site of significant events. Notably, Klement Gottwald delivered a pre-election speech at the building while it served as the headquarters for the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party. In the 1960s, it became home to one of the first wide-screen 70 mm cinemas in Kladno, marking its role as a cultural hub until the opening of another cultural center in Sítná in 1973.

Today, the building serves as the headquarters for Česká spořitelna. Early 21st-century renovations preserved the exterior but significantly altered the original interior spaces. The first floor and staircase once hosted the Gallery of Česká spořitelna until 2019, showcasing works by prominent photographers. Despite these changes, the building remains a testament to its historical significance and architectural innovation.

Visitors to Kladno can appreciate the Hornický - Lidový dům not only for its architectural uniqueness but also for its rich history as a cultural and political landmark. Its preservation offers insight into early 20th-century Czechoslovakia's social and political landscape, making it a worthwhile destination for those interested in architecture and history.
